AT&T Shipping HSUPA Cards AirCard 881 can take advantage of faster upstream speeds AT&T says they've started shipping HSUPA cards, or for those who are broadband acronym-challenged, cards that will let wireless broadband customers take advantage of network upgrades that offer faster upstream bandwidth. A little bit more detail on the card from the company's press release: The AirCard 881 offers tri-band 3G connectivity and is compatible with mobile broadband networks worldwide, including such countries as Japan and South Korea, making it an ideal choice for international travelers. For use in areas in which HSPA coverage is not yet available, the AirCard 881 PC card is also compatible with all four EDGE/GPRS frequency bands used worldwide. AT&T's nationwide* EDGE network is the largest national high speed wireless data network in the U.S. High-Speed Uplink Packet Access technology should nudge AT&T wireless broadband customers up into the 500-800kbps range (many get around 300kbps currently). The company says they'll progressively announce which markets have received this upgrade over the next month or two.

LOL They offer rollover minutes because of all the calls you drop. I will stick to Verizon Wireless wow, that is the most utter shit I have ever heard, you know what the rollover minutes are right? Just in-case you dont let me tell you. It is what ever minutes you havent used in that month get rolled over into the next. So lets say you used all but 50 minutes in your plan for that month. Instead of losing those 50 minutes, they 'rollover' into the next month and you start that month with 50 more minutes added. At this time I have just over 2000 rollover minutes on my plan, and if I go over my monthly minutes, they will then deduct it from the rollover without being charged for over useage for that month. Also, the minutes are good for up to 1 year.
I guess your just pissed because verizon doesnt offer the same and the 'Can you hear me now?' thing is verizon and I guess it shows they are trying to improve coverage one step at a time and checking if you can still hear him... -- Get your own Gamercard Sig.

| | Rather late Sprint/Verizon have RevA coverage to over 210m pops each, which can do 500-800Kbps uplink, sometimes higher. Sprint claims they'll have 240m pops by end of this year. Given that ATT is still behind in HSPDA coverage (under 170m pops), how long will it take to get HSUPA up to speed?
WiMAX will be rolled out nationwide before HSPA matches EVDO at the rate ATT has been moving.

| MarkyDPremium join:2002-08-20 Oklahoma City, OK | AT&T service... In Oklahoma City, AT&T is terrible. My good friend has an iPhone on AT&T here, and he drops calls driving down major highways on a regular basis. Not to mention, it always sounds like absolute CRAP! On top of that, AT&T doesn't even have 3g here yet...rumor is November 1st, but we'll see.
Sprint, on the other hand, has GREAT voice quality, GREAT prices, and EVDO rev. a here in OKC. I just wish my Motorola Q didn't suck so bad. -- MarkyD, Paper Tiger MCSA 2K3, SCNP, MCDST, MCITP, ACHDS, ACDT, ACPT, ACTC, A+, Network+ Security+, Server+, ITIL Foundations

| | | | BrushedToothRemember To Shop Smart Shop S Mart join:2001-02-12 Westerville, OH | Re: AT&T service... It basically has to do with what codec is being used for the audio, full rate sounds really clear. Of course this is all phone dependent, since each device reception varies even if the bars being displayed are the same. I find call quality on AT&T's 3G network to be excellent, clearer than a landline. -- AKA Its_Smee, I got bored with that name. | |
| | | | en102Canadian, eh? join:2001-01-26 Valencia, CA 1 edit | There are a few codecs used on GSM: Older codecs: 'Full Rate' 13kbps 'Enhanced Full Rate' 12.2kbps 'Half Rate' 6.7kbps and AMR (Adaptive Multirate) in both full and half rate flavors. AMR itself is a good codec, as it will switch between 12.2kbps of audio with low error correction on a good link to 4.75kbps audio with lots of error correction to hold a call during poor conditions. Half rate version of this codec cuts both the data payload and correction to increase capacity (lots of garble). I don't like quoting wiki, but here goes »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adaptive_Multi-Rate This ones a little better »www.commsdesign.com/showArticle.···16501605
Basically, half rate uses a TDMA timeslot on every 2nd frame vs. every frame to increase capacity. AMR can go dynamically between Full and Half rate. In many markets, AT&T has networks default to AMR-half rate as the preferred codec. Motorola Vxxx, Razrs, etc. can all be modded to remove a specific codec (i.e. I've modded my old V505 to disable AMR-half rate). »xrl8.us/hofo has details. -- Canada = Hollywood North

| | | | Re: if you are a business you go I consistently get 1.2-1.5mbps down but an inconsistent 75 to 350kbps upstream when I tether my ATT 8525 or ATT 8925 PDAs to my laptop. Uusally it is closer to 1.2mbps/300kbps but downstream is definitely more consistent than upstream. Costs of unlimited data plans that allow tethering are outrageous. The main 2 are "PDA unlimited with tethering" which for $69.99 (plus voice plan over $39.99) allows you to tether your laptop and have 1500 text messages from your phone. The other one is called "Data Connect unlimited" which for $59.99 per month (again on top of qualifying voice plan) allows you to tether but gives not text messaging. I just use that plan and add 200 text messages for $4.99. Alternatively (since you have unlimited data) you can text by email from the phone without incurring text messaging charges. Wayne | |
