story category AT&T Shutters MobiTV Service
No longer available after September 1
11:42AM Monday Aug 17 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: Video · business · alternatives · telco
Back in 2006 AT&T launched a re-branded version of MobiTV, which offered twenty or so channels delivered via broadband. With better alternatives now available, and AT&T more interested in users signing up for U-Verse TV, the company is sending letters to subscribers saying the service will no longer be offered after September 1. As a small perk, customers of the service got two free months, and aren't being billed for the service months of July and August. AT&T hasn't revealed any data on how many users were subscribed, but it likely wasn't very many. Can any AT&T MobiTV customers chime in? Update: AT&T tells us that this shut down down does not impact their mobile wireless MobiTV offering.

Never know about AT&T's involvement in this

Though I have heard about MobiTV. Pretty low quality stuff since it was made to run over a 2.5G connection. Not really worthwhile.

SprintTV on the other hand actually looks decent, since it's made for EvDO-equipped handsets...

Re: Never know about AT&T's involvement in this

I think they have a broadcast / TV service which works better, but in more limited markets.

This kind of reminds me of how AT&T killed Call Vantage (available everywhere) for Uverse VoIP (Uverse Voice) which is only available with Uverse in those limited areas.

They do. It's a service from MediaFLO, which is owned by Qualcomm. It uses spectrum that had been used to broadcast UHF channel 55. Actually, both AT&T and VZW resell the same service.

The quality was actually pretty good, generally. It couldn't work over GPRS but worked respectably over EDGE(very acceptable quality) and excellent over 3G. It dynamically adjusted to network conditions. Interruptions, even on EDGE, were none-minimal, unless in a very congested area for EDGE. I cancelled service last month out of frustration with billing for my new handset(being double-billed for the old and new, even after the rep assuring me that would not happen). There could have been more variety on many of the channels, but it was a good service to have in a pinch at the airport and such. Shame to see it go.

Uverse solution?

Maybe they have a uverse product they will release to take its place. Kinda like when they sunset callvantage.

U-Verse??

I can barely get 1.5/384 DSL..no RT's in the area, nothing..

I didn't mind it too much back in 2003 when I signed up for the service, but now my area is completely under-served and going to cable is not a feasible option..

That is, literally, the worst cable broadband provider I have ever heard of ( 3 GB down / 2 GB up).

You would be better off with cellular service.

Do they still use dialup return for cable internet?

This was expected

I had it on my AT&T phones but wanted me to pay for it, so I never used it.
But, it was funny because on the Blackjack 2 smartphone version, the "trial" was for a couple of days rather than for a few minutes of viewing. The funny part is that someone figured out the "timer" file that kept track from the time you launched it so MobiTV would read said file to figure out when it was first launched. Well, if you deleted said file it would reset your "trial" so you could watch it for free indefinitely. They fixed it in later versions by making it so you could only watch it for a few minutes each time you launch it.
The channels were nothing spectacular. I would have bought it if it was really live streaming TV channels.

To be honest I don't care for any pre-installed applications unless they are completely free.

MobiTV

I used it on my ATT tilt for about 2 months. It was not really worth the $10 a month extra for low quality TV. I had it during the football season. Games were delayed by serveral minutes.

Re: MobiTV

Yeah I did the same on my Tilt. It worked great for TV in the car as we drove around the western states and we were able to keep tabs on the Olympics but once we got home I cancled it as it really served little purpose in a non mobile environment.

About half the channels were just podcast length recaps and highlights of shows on the actual channel that just repeated in a cycle. Very few channels were actual streams.

Interestingly even when not subscribed the Disney Channel still works on this service, too bad it wasn't CNN or Discovery.

Not surprised

Hell they want to charge 10$ for voice on the gps. Hope they die. I should get voice direction included with the gps feature. Greedy bastards.
