AT&T Starts Tinkering With Ad-Laden Free Wi-Fi
Free Wi-Fi at DFW Airport Starting in September
by Karl Bode Friday 06-Apr-2012 tags: business · wireless · bandwidth · wireless
AT&T is the largest Wi-Fi operator in the United States, offering access to more than 20,000 hotspots across a wide variety of stores including Starbucks and Barnes and Noble. The company has also ramped up their deployment of larger "hotzones" across numerous cities, offering free access to smartphone owners in the hopes of easing network congestion. The company is now tinkering with the idea of offering free Wi-Fi for non Wi-Fi customers -- in exchange for a few ad views. Kevin Fitchard at GigaOM notes that this is currently only going to be offered at the Dallas Fort Worth airport starting in September, and may extend beyond this trial if AT&T finds the project viable. Non AT&T customers currently pay $20 a month or $4 a pop to access AT&T's Wi-Fi network.

Its called QoS. If you are on an ATT Device(like the ATT Iphone), the wifi is fast. If you are on a different device, its automatically QoS'd to a slow 128kbps on most ATT WiFis unless they are not congested. Blame the idiots that came in, bought a single coffee, and sat there all day downloading and crap like that. It was ruined for the many by a few greedy cheepskates.

I've come to loathe free wifi when there isn't a pay option present. Sometimes I just want to pay the $5 so I can get my work done.

Exactly. Granted this was in chicago, where half the residential building the starbucks is in uses the free wifi at the starbucks, which is open 24/7. Just easier tethering with my android. Much Much faster.

Re: Soo slow..

I believe most commercial routers have a Distance / ACK Timing limiter option.

It should be adjustable in meters which is very handy to keep patrons outside the building from connecting.

I would imagine they could set it for like 6 meters or so ( depending on the firmware you might have to double the distance and add 1% cpu delay time )

Wonder why they don't use it?

Re: Soo slow..

Inside the starbucks, my laptop lists over 30 wireless network alone, with good signal on all. It's very populated. Would that be why?
This is the norm at caribu's and starbucks in chicago. They take space on the bottom of an apartment or other building.

I wouldn't be shocked if they still use a t1.

Re: Soo slow..

Interference can be an issue but since your so close to the AP I doubt it.

Sounds like your Starbucks has incorrect QOS and / or no ACK timing protection, thus allowing the whole neighborhood to connect and suck up all the available bandwidth.

oh no, they use fast connections. I have used the raw connection at my local starbucks(because I have a friend that works there, and he let me speedtest the Ethernet connection to the modem after they closed, which they simply disconnect to "shut off" the wireless without shutting down the router), and they use a reasonable fast connection when they can get it. Here, they have charter business, and that particular starbucks has a commercial 50/20 tier(you can negotiate faster upload speeds, but it costs you). The routers use heavy QoS, and blacklists of known abusers thru MAC filtering(which we all know can easily be gone around). they also use distance guessing based on Ping times, so you cannot connect to it unless you are withing 10 meters of the router(which encompasses the store, and usually the small outdoor sitting area, but he said the range can be changed because not all stores are created equal). Their routers are actually quite nice, and im in line to get one when the local stabucks upgrades theirs(they sell them for cheap, and since I know the manager and am friends with the owner, im getting a new long range router possibly next month when they upgrade).

Re: Soo slow..

I know many starbucks that do not have that type of connection available. Many use DSL connections still. And i can even tell you some locations that are just on T1s.

Re: Soo slow..

I think a lot are on DSL. I doubt any are on a T1 dedicated circuit just for cost reasons.

What is the make/model# of the router if you don't mind?

Really?

How will they know which phones belong to the AT&T network and which don't?

I am with AT&T (Unfortunately and not by choice) and I don't want to get hit with these ads.
