Battery short or DSLAM power supply problem
(old news - 02:26PM Wednesday Dec 13 2006)
tags: hardware · telco · networking · Oddities
Light Reading reports that AT&T is still on the case of the exploding DSLAM, which sent shrapnel hurtling some fifty feet away and scorched some properties in the Houston suburbs. An inside source at AT&T tells the website they're closing in on two possible reasons for the explosion: a high-resistance short across the battery terminals inside the base of the cabinet, or a possible power supply problem with the Alcatel-Lucent DSLAM housed in the cabinet. AT&T repeats that this isn't a broader problem with their Project Lightspeed install.

I have a better one for ya.

What about a BUILD UP of gas from the batteries when they are charging. They give off a flammable gas for crying out loud. Even if they are sealed doesnt mean one was cracked at the top letting the GAS out and all it needed would be a source. Source would be easy a power supply or a switch.

Re: I have a better one for ya.

Unless the fan failed and it also failed to alert the monitoring centeron the fan failure then there would not have been time for gas to build up.

Or the fan was running but failing to put out the PROPER CFM.

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO DSLAM explosion. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

Remember the SNL skit? Gosh, I can't remember who all was in it, but it was funny as hell. They were playing "Celebrity Jeopardy".

BBR Member did it

I think someone here torched it. All the hate being encouraged around here drove someone to do this.

That's not as un-common as you think. I have read sabotage reports before from rather "interesting" people. Especially the cable cutters carting the cable off to get "copper for sale".

I liked the one a few years back the guy destroyed the RT with his car because he didn't like how it looked off the road. Not sure if it made local news though.

@execulink.com
I think the opposite is more likely to cause an explosion.

Tubular!

Maybe a clogged "tube" caused the explosion?

You All Have It Wrong

The tubes were clogged, nobody sent lottery through the tubes and they backed up causing the explosion.

I wonder...

If there was any inclement weather around when this happened. It sure looked like a lightning strike to me.
And yes, things that get hit by 20-30 bajillion volts usually DO explode.

Danger: 20 Million Ohms!

A high-resistance short won't do anything because higher resistance means less current. A low resistance short would draw lots of current and be a Bad Thing.

Re: Danger: 20 Million Ohms!

You beat me to that post. I was thinking the same thing. A high resistance short could appear (to the batteries at least) similar to normal load. Low resistance would draw mondo current, get the cells really hot, make them gas a lot of hydrogen and possibly fail catastrophically--think dropping a steel wrench across battery terminals. . .

Explosion the Real Reason for Late Rollout

Obviously ATT is so concerned over this that they have changed their U-Verse product rollout schedule to 15 to 20 neighborhoods instead of 25 to 20 cities by years end.

Remember its not the product you receive that counts its how it is provided. Customers really don't care about low download speeds box reboots pixelation and channels disappearing. Customers care that their VDSL2 hardware shows a 25 meg synch or 'significantly higher.

"Hey Bob hows the game? Well theres no picture today but I've got a great synch here, just great, really getting my monies worth."

lol

Hey. At least the people have DSLAM's on their roads. Exploding DSLAM's sound almost desirable. Does this mean, they are actually going to get off their ass and install somthing that doesnt look like its 30's old.

haha
