AT&T Temp Arrested For Data Theft Stole co-workers' info, took out loans online.... Tipped by Greg_Z
According to the Chicago Tribune, an AT&T temp was arrested late last week after the employee stole the personal information of roughly 2,100 co-workers. After stealing the information, the employee cut and pasted victim information onto dummy pay stubs, then faxed them to loan companies in order to take out significant loans. Many of the victims weren't made aware of the crime until they were contacted by collection agencies. Cassandra Walls, 25, of Chicago was indicted on 5 counts of wire fraud and 5 counts of aggravated identity theft in federal court, according to the Tribune.

Have your identity stolen or have your personal data handed to the NSA with an eager smile.

| | 2100 victims, but only 5 counts? Its almost like Telco math. | |

Could mean that she stole the info of 2100 people (victims of having their info stolen) but only used 5 of them for the loans (hence the 5 counts of each charge) or only applied for 5 loans (doubt she used multiple names for a single loan).

| Depending on what the statutes read, it may not make a difference 5 or 2100. If they were to charge her with 2100 counts, the defense could make difficult/expensive to prove all 2100 counts individually. And even if she were to be convicted of 2100 counts, if the sentences were to be served concurrently then she would still be out in the same amount of time. Instead, the prosecution probably chose 5 of the most obvious or egregious cases and ran with those. | |

| I worked as a temp, and had access to components worth several thousands of dollars. Depends on the nature of the job responsibilities.
The really intriguing thing is that the company which owned those components had terminated me for cause (attendance) a couple of years earlier. They owned the facility, and the contents, but contracted labor to a third party, which, in turn, hired temps to meet their facility staffing requirements.
BTW, most temps I've known have been at least as honorable as their regular hire counterparts.
(Oh, and that third party contractor was even stricter about attendance than the company that canned me; but I had learned my lesson!) -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum

Rogue WolfAte Your Homework, And Framed The Dog join:2003-08-12 Troy, NY | Why do dumb people keep trying to be criminals? Seriously. If you were smart enough to be a criminal mastermind and execute a broad identity-theft scheme without the government tracking you down... would you be a temporary worker for AT&T in the first place?
A note to would-be amateur criminals: They'll probably catch you, and you'll probably go to prison for a good long while and have absolutely nothing to look forward to when you get out. Only the white-collar folks get to go to Club Fed. -- Hexadecimal humor really turns me 0FF.
