With a specific eye on increasing Pacific bandwidth

AT&T says they'll be spending $1 billion worldwide this year on their network infrastructure, focusing in particular on running four undersea cables connecting North America and Asia-Pac. Like Verizon and Google, the carrier is responding to a massive surge in demand for bandwidth across the Pacific, which has about half the capacity that's running across the Atlantic. The press release from those cuddleable ragamuffins at AT&T says they'll also be adding new core MPLS routers in Europe, Asia and the U.S., beefing up existing data center hosting capacity and building a new hosting center in Bangalore.
The 2008 program — which is 33 percent more than last year's enterprise investment and more than double AT&T's investment in 2006 — is being driven by demand for Internet Protocol (IP) networks and services as companies deal with the explosive surge in data, voice and video traffic made possible by the proliferation of high speed networks and devices worldwide.
AT&T recently fired a PR shot at Comcast by posing as a cable customer and buying 150 cable connections from the company. After testing the network, the telco claimed most Comcast customers weren't getting the speeds they were advertised. With their FTTN plans unable to match the end throughput of DOCSIS 3.0 for most users, their execs have begun ramping up marketing the company as having a superior global network (though in this case they're primarily highlighting their enterprise capacity).

NO. The $1 bln is ONLY what AT&T is spending overseas. Last year they spent $18 bln in capital improvements, all except $750 million in the US. And this year a like amount is expected.

So Sonic.net isn't in the same category.

No DWDM???

Dense Wavelength Multiplexing (DWDM) obviates the need for more than few [existing] fibers. I mean 96 lambda's on a single fiber -- at say 40gbs each should be more than adequate yes? Now, lets assume they have more than one fiber already laid...

Re: No DWDM???

The fact that you can indeed stuff 40gbps over a single piece of glass doesnt mean that the rest of the equation has caught up. There arent many routers out there with OC768 ports on them to send that kind of data over just one connection, it is alot more realistic to run alot more fiber and terminate them in more equipment etc. Most carriers have pops full of ESRs and GSRs to handle OC12s and OC48s... even 192s but 768s are a little obscenely pricey.

Compare U-Verse TV to FiOS TV and you will have your answer.

Poor comparison. This is a core build, not end user build.

Re: Good

My point exactly... There's more to a real network than home broadband connections.

it's not difficult or unwise to extrapolate the quality of a network by the offerings of home broadband connections. my bet is that it's decent indicator.

AT&T's worldwide network is former AT&T ("the old" AT&T) IIRC, while their broadband is the old SBC/BellSouth- probably not the best metric there.

How? With U-Verse, I believe that you can only be watching HD quality programming on one TV at a time..where as FiOS that is not the case. You can infer one of two things:
a) Their network cannot support the load.
b) They are bandwidth nazis

If "a" is not the answer and you know why they only allow HD programming on one TV please let me know.

@cox.net
They have one of the oldest networks and when compared to newer networks, like Qwest (their IP backbone division, not the ILEC division), Level3 and others (Limelight, etc.), their network isn't as up to date.

sounds good

but they have to remember that if the connection to the their network is poor, then a better backbone is not that useful for all (the whole issue of bottlenecks argument). they also can't neglect the backbone. in the case of ATT's network, i'd like to see a lot of work in upgrading to the eventual FTTH. i don't really mind if they do just FTTN since it shows that they realize that they understand that twisted copper pair phonelines will only get you so far in bandwidth and that they are actively doing something about it.

Re: sounds good

It will do wonders for their peering agreements, especially from all those Asian ISP's filled with customers that have 100mbs connections.

That's funny, I am an at&t customer and I don't get the speeds they advertise, either.

Lets shift our webhosting to offshore sites...

Is what I expect them to be doing.
Eg. www.google.com will be hosted out of Bangalore or Mumbai, along with all your credit cards info, etc.

i can only say that post-deregulation, post-SBC acquisition
AT&T sets the standard for greedy, unethical, uncaring US corporations.

Most corporations and greed/ethics/uncaring are 2 things that do not mix well.
Insurance and U.S. Healthcare industry takes the cake on that one.

It's just realisation that the U.S. is quickly becoming a third world nation. A third world nation doesn't need a first class internet connection for the masses. We need more loans from China and Dubai to keep the ever thinning veil hiding that we can't afford our current life style.

Great for off-shorers

Bet this is driven by huge demand from IBM, Microsoft and others that have tens of thousands of employees in India and all over Asia.

All the better to outsource your Tech Jobs to India with...

Yes, that bandwidth is needed to fuel connections to exploding Internet usage in China, India, and so on.

Maybe we'll be able to get a halfway decent connection to Japan this way.

Maybe.

Atleast expand 3G/HSDPA/UTMS beyond the small chunks of city (not even convering suburbs) that the network is right now.

Some suit within ATT must have evaluated the pros and cons and figured this investment is going to make the most profit.
