As telco continues to push through former BellSouth region

AT&T today launched their VDSL-based U-Verse service in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as the company continues to ramp up deployment of the service across former BellSouth markets. The company also recently launched the service in Memphis and portions of Alabama. With all of these launches, AT&T's been patting themselves on the back for bringing a competitor to cable, though some of the customers AT&T's trying to woo sometimes aren't always impressed by AT&T pricing or speeds. Cox is AT&T's primary competitor in Baton Rouge, and consumer advocates tell the Advocate AT&T doesn't try very hard when competing on price:

"Competition is good for consumers. The problem is they (AT&T) haven’t competed very hard," said Mark Cooper, Consumer Federation of America director of research. "I don’t know the details of what they’re doing in Baton Rouge, but the telephone companies tend to come in with a price that’s roughly equivalent for a service that’s roughly equivalent."
Baton Rouge customers can enter their zip code here to see U-Verse pricing, and to see if their neighborhood is being serviced by AT&T.

Price imbalance

What ATT is charging for their Max 18 (18/1.5) is rather high. For just $4 more, I am getting 25/25 on my Fiber connection. Me thinks it is time for them to get a little more competitve.

Re: Price imbalance

Charter charges $70 for 20/2 and that's if you bundle. So $65 for 18/1.5 is right in line.

You have U-Verse as an option competing with that 25/25 fiber connection for $4 more in your market?

In my city of Elk Grove, no. The phone company is Frontier. Just half a mile away though, they are competing head to head. I do not know if the prices ATT charges in the article are those that they charge in Sacramento.

Moving north?

When will this drop in Bossier City/Shreveport?

Since we have no hope for FiOS, this is the best we can do in LA.

Re: Moving north?

LA has other options.

Eatel in Accension parish, which is just south of BTR, has FTTP.

Don't forget Laft. with their project to light the town.

Re: Moving north?

EATel is the ILEC in Ascension Parish & south Livingston Parish.... Last I remember they were not pushing their FTTH into EBR Parish...

Lafayette Utility Services [LUS] is moving along very well into their 2nd phase of their FTTH.

Cox has a strong presence in EBR & Lafayette Parish and is so/so depends on your node. If you are near LSU or ULL you have those notorious speed swings in the evenings. As for Hammond, that's Charter hell...

Re: prices too high

The price of gas in Saudi Arabia is a few nickels a gallon. The price of gas in California is about three dollars per gallon. What does one have to do with the other?

Different markets see different prices.

...and it's arbitrary pricing at that! I went on a recent trip from CA to Maine and back. CA had the most expensive gas in the country! It's gas was more expensive than even the border states who get their gas from refineries IN CA. Just crazy....

Yep... way too high. Not sure where it is available. I've tried like 4 or 5 addresses across town and it says it is not available.
