story category AT&T U-Verse Reaches Alabama
VDSL in parts of Mobile and Pensacola.

tags: competition · business · alternatives · AT&T U-Verse
After a recent launch in Memphis, AT&T's now expanding the company's VDSL-based IPTV service into Alabama, as the company continues to push its upgrades into former BellSouth territory. Select customers in the Mobile and Pensacola areas now have access to the service, AT&T telling locals the launch is a great thing because "competition makes everybody better at what they do." As in many other markets, some Mobile city council members were concerned about the visual impact of large AT&T VRADs on property values. "I know how it feels because I've got a utility box in front of my house," says Council member Connie Hudson. "I planted a Sago palm in front of it." AT&T this week is also pushing U-Verse into the Louisville, Kentucky area.

Not only there...

UVerse has been available for several months in some Birmingham neighborhoods, for what it's worth.

Re: Not only there...

They switch it for you. I currently have Fast Access DSL and a basic landline. They are going to care of of the switch (DSL and keep the same number), according to what they tell me.

Now that's the truth...

"competition makes everybody better at what they do"

Yes, lying to get what you want. How about the lower prices promised to consumers?

With contracts you won't see compitition pricing. Get rid of them and you would since your able to choose from month to month

I'm wondering what states don't have U-verse yet. Which one will be the last.

They just only started to show availability here in Louisville just this past week, and it's still pretty limited. I have to agree with you, Hurry Up!

U-Verse in Mobile

I am getting U-Verse installed tomorrow at my house in Mobile. I am glad to see that Comcast, Mediacom, and others will get some competition. Although, I doubt we will see any lower prices from this.

I have a co-worker that used to work as a U-Verse installer that is warning me to make sure that they can get 2 HD streams to the side of my house. I hope that isn't a problem, I do want to be able to record and watch at the same time on the DVR.

The 2 HD streams at time would kill me...

I don't think it is anywhere in Louisiana yet, but I've heard rumors about it coming this month.

Anyone know the typical prices of the internet and their speeds?

12.0 Mbps Max Starting at $55/mo.

6.0 Mbps Elite Starting at $43/mo.

Re: U-Verse in Mobile

Honestly, based on the existing pricing from AT&T for plain ol' DSL and what I remember Mediacom offering for prices, the internet pricing isn't that bad. I am mostly excited about the TV service, it really looks promising from what I have seen so far. I do think that the internet pricing could be, sure enough, a little more appealing.

The main reason U-Verse is appealing to me is because Mediacom may offer some competitive speeds and pricing for internet, but I can't stand their TV service. I have been using DirecTV for TV, and AT&T for DSL. I like the idea of U-Verse because it is a service that will offer what appears to be a good TV service and Internet speeds that will allow me to indeed bundle. I am tired of having to pay different providers, but didn't want to bundle with Mediacom because of their lackluster TV service.

Cox cable offers their 10/1 for $42.99 with powerboost you can hit higher but I only count maximum actual speeds. But to be fair DSL a 1.5 meg DSL connection is really on 1.3 due to PPPOE overhead that they fail to not correct.

I was hoping for something like 10/1 or 12/1 for around $42 a month. Oh well.... I'll stick with Cox and my DishNetwork DVR with the HD Absolute package for $42 a month.

I've always heard over and over again that their SD is good quality but their HD is very poor. The 2 HD's at one time kills the deal for me. I record three HD things at one time right now, soon to be 6 HD at a time when I pick up my second DVR. I'm just not ready to lock myself into that 2 HD stream deal.

Re: U-Verse in Mobile

The HD has improved greatly in the past year or so. That was my biggest gripe with U-Verse when I first got it, but to their credit it's gotten as good as any other provider IMO.

They also just added MediaShare in most markets recently, which allows music/pics to play over the network to the STB. Very cool.

The 2HD streams will be a dead-breaker for some people, but they've really come up with a good product in U-Verse. I far prefer it to Comcast and there are some advantages over my last provider, DTV.

Re: U-Verse in Mobile

Hey Alpine, thanks for the up-to-date info. I have heard that they have improved the HD quality and increased the available streams (an are working on line bonding to provide more). I am 1350ft from the VRAD, by the way the phone lines run. I calculated this (Using a google earth photo) by the way the phone lines run from the VRAD above the ground to my house. My neighborhood has above ground utilities, which can be a good thing sometimes. My enthusiasm for U-Verse is based on the fact I hate digital cable, the presentation are so crappy when compared to DirecTV (which I have now). I simply like the idea of high speed internet that is in the same package with a decent digital TV package. For me, 2 HD streams should be fine, I live in a house with only 2 HD TVs, and I live by myself.

Most of that overhead is ATM overhead. PPPoE accounts for a handful of bits. I think 2% IIRC while ATM accounts for 10-12%.

Uverse doesn't use ATM IIRC.

Samby

the standard for U-vese is 2HD/2SD. Surely You,ll get 2HD.

Re: U-Verse in Mobile

I got installed today. So far, so good. I really like the TV service, the DVR/STB is so responsive. I really like how quick the channels change. The PQ is good, and I am getting 2 HD streams. From paying with it, I don't see a problem with being limited to 2 HD streams. I will do a full review, eventually, in the review section.
