The MSOs grabbed a huge chunk of customers who were tired of being nickle and dimed by the ILECs, or who were pulled in by Triple Play Bundle discounts.
I don't think AT&T is going to have the same luxury.

| Re: Pricing? •U-verse Voice Unlimited: unlimited local and nationwide minutes to any location in the U.S., Canada or U.S. territories for $40 a month. I can get a regular unlimited calling landline(no VOIP) from Verizon for less than what AT&T is charging for VOIP service. Their price is no bargain at all unless they give bigger discounts for triple play service. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page | |

Too bad I don't see AT&T hyping CallVantage this way, as its only $25/month. -- Canada = Hollywood North

The same Company, same technology and yet 2 different prices. It will be hard to sell/switch someone who has CallVantage and Uverse to Uvoice. Who would want to pay 40 instead of 25?

| Re: Pricing? I have a dry line and CV. The CV is supplied by my employer, and as a part of the install they had a UPS done also. the UPS is a bit oversized, a 1200, but does the job, even when I don't want to work. Considering AT&T is installing a $75 UPS, and are not responsible for maintaining the UPS, it has a high profit return for them, plus they no longer have to maintain the copper for your line between the BBOX and the CO. Most folks have cell phones so a power outage isn't that critical. I have never had any choppiness or other quality issues with it, but I have 10 meg down and 1.5 meg up pipe. If you were on the lowest DSL plans you might experience it. | |

| Misnomer I keep reading statements like this here on DSLR: "The price point certainly doesn't scare indie VoIP providers, but then again cable has dominated the market by charging a premium."
I don't think that's accurate (much less fair). Cable "VoIP" and indie VoIP are really only related in that they use IP packets to transmit voice, but beyond that, there are no similarities. First of all, MSO VoIP adheres to the PacketCable standard and their voice product has QoS on the HFC, something no indie VoIP provider like Vonage is going to have. Secondly, the eMTA cable provides has a built in backup battery and cable modem all in one device, which is not cheap.
The difference is with MSO telephone you're paying for a lifeline capable service, with Vonage et. al, you're paying for whatever you can get at that moment. They're in a different league. -- "Don't steal. The government hates competition."
