Third U-Verse VoIP market comes online
(old news - 10:14AM Monday Mar 03 2008)
tags: business · telco · VoIP · AT&T U-Verse · AT&T DSL Service
AT&T has announced that they've launched their U-Verse VoIP service (aka "U-Verse Voice") in Kansas City (the one in Kansas, not the one in Missouri). This is the service's third launch market, after previous launches in Detroit and portions of Connecticut. AT&T is moving slowly as they work out the kinks in the new technology. The prices, for those who hadn't seen them already:
Click for full size
U-verse Voice Unlimited: unlimited local and nationwide minutes to any location in the U.S., Canada or U.S. territories for $40 a month.
U-verse Voice 1000: 1,000 Call Anywhere minutes to any location in the U.S. or U.S. territories for $30 a month.
U-Verse Voice is available only with purchase of AT&T U-verse TV service or AT&T Yahoo! broadband. Triple play bundles start at $114. A second phone line can be added for $20 per month. The price point certainly doesn't scare indie VoIP providers, but then again cable has dominated the market by charging a premium.

Pricing?

The MSOs grabbed a huge chunk of customers who were tired of being nickle and dimed by the ILECs, or who were pulled in by Triple Play Bundle discounts.

I don't think AT&T is going to have the same luxury.

Re: Pricing?

Actualy Insight cable here in columbus offers phone service for that same 40/mo price mark, discounts internet to 35 and cable to 30. So they arnt too far off, and a nice plus is that all their cable boxes are both HD and a DVR a cost savings u need to add into the picture. Now if only they would finish deploying here.

Comcast charges $39.95 for it's CDV service and that's if you have cable and internet. I believe they ended up becoming the 4th or 5th largest phone company.

I can get a regular unlimited calling landline(no VOIP) from Verizon for less than what AT&T is charging for VOIP service. Their price is no bargain at all unless they give bigger discounts for triple play service.

The problem is that Verizon and AT&T don't compete in the same areas. You will not get an Unlimited POTS line from AT&T for less than $40 a month.

I can get AT&T unlimited POTS/LD service for $40/month... just have to pay a few $$ more for Canada.

Too bad I don't see AT&T hyping CallVantage this way, as its only $25/month.

I bet you're right. I think Karl has mentioned in a couple of news articles that the Bellsouth areas still have Bellsouth pricing.

The same Company, same technology and yet 2 different prices. It will be hard to sell/switch someone who has CallVantage and Uverse to Uvoice. Who would want to pay 40 instead of 25?

Re: Pricing?

You guys have to remember some thing.

CV is $25 but is going out on the internet and using your pipe. Uvoice has it's down dedicated stream that doesn't interfere with your internet. If it's like the cable companies version. It should have a battery backup, 911 behaves differently I believe and a tech would come out if a problem happens.

With any regular VoIP provider like CV, Vonage, etc. no tech comes out and depending on bandwidth it can be choppy.

A lot of folks don't want to deal with that they would rather call one number report A, B and/or C issue and some one comes out to fix it.

Why do you think people are paying the $$ to the cable companies for it's VoIP service. Like I stated earlier Comcast I believe is now the 4th or 5th largest phone company because of that.

Re: Pricing?

Yeah - bundling it hasn't hurt them in that regards either.

I'm sure that if AT&T bundled CV with DSL (dry loop), they would probably have had more subs than Comcast with it.
You would deal with AT&T for both... they run CV and their DSL, so I don't see where they would have an issue.

I've used Skype now for more than a year, and its quality is very good. Cable almost has to use a dedicated channel in many areas, as they do have overloaded nodes in SOME areas, and can not guarantee and sort of QoS. DSL on the other hand typically has a very stable connection, which is why I've been able to use Skype and Skype webcam (to Canada no less) w/o any issues on a 3Mbps line.

Re: Pricing?

I have a dry line and CV. The CV is supplied by my employer, and as a part of the install they had a UPS done also. the UPS is a bit oversized, a 1200, but does the job, even when I don't want to work. Considering AT&T is installing a $75 UPS, and are not responsible for maintaining the UPS, it has a high profit return for them, plus they no longer have to maintain the copper for your line between the BBOX and the CO. Most folks have cell phones so a power outage isn't that critical. I have never had any choppiness or other quality issues with it, but I have 10 meg down and 1.5 meg up pipe. If you were on the lowest DSL plans you might experience it.

Exactly... and I don't have 'kids' on my line throttling it with BT or other traffic.
I do have 2 cell phones on AT&T + a work line for Nextel Blackberry, so I'm not THAT worried about power outages. To add a note to that, I do have a car jumpstart kit and 200W AC inverted, which powered my laptop and DSL modem for hours w/o issue in the past.
Since you're on, and from Santa Clarita... could you post a trace to www.dnps.com - I'm curious to see the lag and hops to go out that way from Santa Clarita.

Misnomer

I keep reading statements like this here on DSLR: "The price point certainly doesn't scare indie VoIP providers, but then again cable has dominated the market by charging a premium."

I don't think that's accurate (much less fair). Cable "VoIP" and indie VoIP are really only related in that they use IP packets to transmit voice, but beyond that, there are no similarities. First of all, MSO VoIP adheres to the PacketCable standard and their voice product has QoS on the HFC, something no indie VoIP provider like Vonage is going to have. Secondly, the eMTA cable provides has a built in backup battery and cable modem all in one device, which is not cheap.

The difference is with MSO telephone you're paying for a lifeline capable service, with Vonage et. al, you're paying for whatever you can get at that moment. They're in a different league.

Been waiting forever for it to come here, and they give it to the state which most of the poeple have cable and don't really care about AT&T. It is still not here where i live and once it is, i'll be the first to buy it.

It has also been available on the MO side of KC since early Feb, but only certain zipcodes. It's just now available on the KS side.

Makes no sense to me...

If you have U-verse you can get AT&T CallVantage For $20.00 instead of $25.00. I can get U-verse but no way and hell would I pay $40.00 for phone service.
