Workers have been without contract since early February
(old news - 12:15PM Wednesday Mar 04 2009)
tags: business · AT&T
The latest scuff up between AT&T and the Communications Workers of America left many union employees working without a contract since early February. The dispute appears to be close to being resolved, with the two sides reaching a tentative agreement that would cover more than 20,000 AT&T Mobility workers. The new deal offers workers a 8.8% wage increase and $500 bonus, as well as improved commissions for sales agents, and "monitoring and quota relief" for some employees.

Cheap skates

I guess ATT's final offer wasn't so final after all. Still though 8.8 percent over 4 years is chicken feed.

Re: Cheap skates

Agree. However they get to keep their jobs and that's a big accomplishment these days.

Re: Cheap skates

Well it is an accomplishment but it isn't because the company is so successful. Its only natural that the employees that help it be so successful should get a fair share. They shouldn't just settle for keeping a job unless they work for a failing company or one that does not turn billions of profit. I hope they never settle for just being employed. Settling for anything less than what you deserve is selling yourself short.

My job is protected from layoffs. If a layoff if announced they layoff the people with the lowest seniority first. So the longer I'm there the less chance I have to be laid off. Even before that happens they have to offer another job inside the company and my pay is protected. If these conditions cant be met and I'm actually laid off I will get payed for the life of the union contract by the union or until rehired by the company. What non union job offers those protections?

Re: Cheap skates

Not a bad deal - until the company itself is imploding due to such contracts.

@ameritech.net

I envy you, I used to work in IT, and unions are mostly non-existent. I left the field, gonna do somthing else. Too many hours and not enough fair pay, no overtime, and no job protection. They just kept adding more and more responsibilities, making me work nights and weekend and on call for free, so I left.

I dont really see how you can say that, especially in this economy. ANY kind of a raise these days is good.

good for a year maybe...but after inflation kicks in from all of the paper the fed is printing, that pay raise will disipate quick. These people will then be locked in to a wage that won't keep up with inflation. However..I understand this move.

Agreed. AT&T managers (non-union types) are not receiving any pay increases this year.

This was about the norm 1.5 - 2% per year when I worked for Bellsouth, but I retired in 2001 and my health care is still free- may change with this or any new contract.

Relief?

"monitoring and quota relief"? What is exactly does that mean? Less quality control?

Re: Relief?

Most sells associates have monthly quotes. It sounds like they’re going to either lower the employee’s quotes or not take disciplinary action when those numbers aren’t reached. And about the monitoring some managers ride their associates’ very hard viewing sells on a day by day basis.

Re: AT&T, Unions Strike Tentative Deal

This clearly illustrates why unions have lived passed their death time, they epitomize socialism as well as being anti-competitive and the free market.
It is high time we disband labor unions in this country and get back to the free market place that allowed this great country to prosper so well. Is it any wonder so many jobs in this country have left our shores?

Core contracts are up in April, and I believe the Southeast (Former Bellsouth) contracts are up in September. Yes, it is a busy year in regards to contract negotiations for at&t and the unions.

Could you please clarify this illustration you mention of why unions should go away? Are against fair wages and treatment for employees? That's kind of like saying you are against the American worker because unions are voted in by the people that work there. I live in a right to work state so people don't have to pay union dues if they don't want to but still get the benefits of union representation. In our district we have over 85% paying membership. If that isn't a sign unions are wanted and needed I don't know what to tell you.

On a side note it's an amazing feeling to be a part of an organization that gives me a little nobody, a voice in my work place. I don't feel like I am a slave to "tha man" because I do have some control of things that go on inside my job. If something that's happening I don't like or I think is not fair I no longer have to just accept it or quit. There is a process that i follow and I can have the union fight for me if need be. I have seen it work out in the employees favor many times.

unions are fine, as long as they're voluntary (ie: the government doesn't force you to be a part of the union), and they have no special powers granted unto them by the government...in the same light, a company should be able to stipulate that their workers, under no circumstances, should be allowed to form a union.

Unions are fine, as long as they have 0 access to governmental power (same goes for corporations).

you guys cant be serious

all of your "free market" guys are a joke. what you meant to say is "get rid of the unions so we can go pay the employees $10/hr. corporations are not evil but they are there for the bottom line. if you came in monday and they told you that you would be making 40% less from now on what would you do? probably shut up and go back to work. unions protect this type of nonsense.

i can never figure out why people hate unions so much. they are called "slackers" because they may not have to work as hard as you do but the problem lies in that maybe you are working too hard? maybe youe employer is asking too much? i cant answer that but a non-union employer will ask for the same productivity whether you are 25 or 55 years old.

unions are about getting a fair share in the workplace. cwa workers like verizon risk their lives everyday. we have had 4 workers killed in the last six months. do they deserve a good wage for risking their lives everyday? yes.

so stop crying because management has brainwashed you. remember that mgmt will not hesitate to fire you before they put their neck on the line.

Re: ATT

CWA are dam good people, working people like you, they only want a decent cost of living & pay benefits,
remember what happened when Eastern Airlines employees took on Frank Lorenzo management ""thought" they could keep the airline going,
and thats what will happen to AT&T,it will start to go down hill, because supervisors, managers have forgotten or have no experience in doing home or phone repair, i only hope that the u verse employees are also part of the cwa, but you can believe without the cwa, if you have a problem your going to have hell trying to get it repaired.

Re: ATT

I am a AT&T Tech. Among the many dangers we face everyday such as high voltage lines, falling off poles and ladders, being attack & bit by dogs, spider bites and the list goes on, not to mention the physical aspects such as bad backs from carrying heavy ladders, blown & bad knees, dangers of contact with dangerous chemicals and asbestos's, carpel tunnel, possible infections from crawling under houses, ect we need a fair wage and health benefits. Mind you I am not complaining, in many ways I like the challenge of my job, and being able to interact & deal with my customers on a personal level and most of time time making them very happy makes this job enjoyable

If you are wondering about the looming strike, here it is.

First of all, don’t let AT&T fool you.
They posted a 12.9 billion dollar profit for 2008, and AT&T executives have said it is on track for solid growth this year

AT&T 2008 Top 5 Executive Compensation

Randall Stephenson, Chairman, CEO & President
$11,565,255.00

Richard Lindner, Sr. Exec. Vice President & CFO
$ 4,623,241.00

Ralph de la Vega, President & CEO, AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets
$ 6,150,645.00

Forrest Miller, Group Pres., Corp. Strategy & Dev.
$ 5,517,097.00

John Stankey, President & CEO, AT&T Operations
$ 5,595,671.00

Total for top execs in 2008: $33,451,909.00

And that& only taking the top 5 in account

Source: AT&T preliminary proxy statement filed 2/17/09

And that is on top of another top benefit they get, Housing

Count AT&T among San Antonio’s high-end home sellers weighed down with unwanted properties.
Nine months after announcing that its headquarters would move to Dallas, the company still is trying to unload CEO Randall Stephenson’s former Olmos Park home, which it purchased for $1.7 million when the house did not sell quickly.

AT&T also is trying to shed the former home of Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel Wayne Watts, for which it paid $660,000, according to regulatory documents filed Wednesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Stephenson and Watts homes are among the 102 company-owned properties in the San Antonio area, according to John Flournoy, managing partner of the Phyllis Browning Co.

And don't forget their free health care, for themselves and their family's

Overall, the negotiations cover 125,000 CWA represented workers covered by six contracts
CWA members are working, for now, under the terms of the contracts that expired Apr. 4. Locations are:

AT&T East, Connecticut , and AT&T East Yellow Pages.

AT&T Midwest , in Illinois , Indiana , Ohio , Michigan and Wisconsin , and AT&T DataCom,

AT&T Southwest, in Arkansas , Kansas , Missouri , Oklahoma and Texas .

AT&T West, in California and Nevada .

AT&T Legacy, nationwide.

At AT&T Southeast; that contract expires Aug. 8, 2008

AS OF TO DATE, AT&T HAS DECIDED TO NOT NEGOTIATE FAIRLY
Discussions continued today in subcommittees around Memoranda of Agreements and Article 3/7 Unfortunately

There is, LITTLE PROGRESS TO REPORT! In formal session The Company rejected 6 of the Unions proposals on Successorship, Evolving Technologies, Appendices B and D, Recognition, Article 7, and the preamble.

They also had some proposals one was like throwing us some crumbs the company would promote CWA/NETT Academy and another one a new version of their no carry over vacation time, where the Company would still have the ability to schedule your vacation for you.

With just 2 more full days till the Contract Expiration date, it is apparent that the Company has NO INTENT OR DESIRE to reach a FAIR and JUST CONTRACT! LISTED BELOW ARE THE RETROGRESSIVE PROPOSALS THE COMPANY PRESENTED TO THE UNION THAT ARE STILL ON THE BARGAINING TABLE. WE WOULD LIKE TO CLARIFY THAT THE UNION HAS NOT AGREED TO ANY OF THESE PROPOSALS:

; HEALTH CARE – This Company proposal creates a two tier structure for health care, one for new hires and one for current employees. Both plans have high premiums, deductibles and out of pocket costs that the current plan does not have. The Company still assures us that they have no intent or desire to bargain for current retirees.
; WAGES - Company proposal does not include an increase in base wages for the first two years
; PENSIONS – Pension Protection Act will be applied to Lump Sum Pensions which eliminates the GATT Rate and applies the Corporate Bond Rate. This will reduce lump sum pensions taken after January 1, 2010.
; PREMISE TECHNICIANS - Company wants to increase work duties and have Premise Technicians perform work in a higher classification.
Company refuses to treat Premises Technicians the same and apply the same work rules as other employees.
OVERTIME- increase the 49 hr to 54 hr rule.
; OVERTIME- eliminate the assignment of overtime to volunteers first, especially for double overtime
; LEVERAGED TITLES - This Company proposal would two tier Service Representative Work with 60/40 pay schedule which would put 40% of pay at risk based on sales. Sales plan controlled by management and no input from the Union.
; APPENDIX E PROPOSAL from the Company applies to Premises Technicians and would no longer protect benefits or work rules for those who took Premises Technicians jobs due to surplus conditions. Worse in many ways then current Appendix E provisions.
• SURPLUS Process– Company proposal does not include Appendix E in this process (finding another position within the company instead of just laying off)
; VACATION – eliminate vacation carry-over and Company to schedule employees vacation.
• NIGHT DIFFERENTIAL change to only the hrs worked that fall into that time would be paid Differential.
; ILLNESS All Employees will have at least one day of waiting before pay starts for illness.
; PARTIALS eliminate payment for partial illnesses.
; HOLIDAY – Eliminate day after Thanksgiving and Presidents day.
; GRIEVANCES – Company wants a two step grievance process.
; UNPAID FMLA TIME OFF – Company will require substitution of contractual paid time off as personal, so don’t consider having childern
; TEAM PERFORMANCE AWARD- Company proposes to eliminate.
• THE COMPANY HAS NOT AGREED TO UNION PROPOSALS TO EXTEND THE FOLLOWING MOA’S THROUGH THE LIFE OF THE 2009
; EMPLOYMENT SECURITY COMMITTMENT(Job Offer Guarantee ), ERB.
; NATIONAL TRANSFER PLAN – Company has not responded.
; MOVEMENT OF WORK/CONTRACTING OUT - Company has rejected.
; NATIONAL HEALTH CARE REFORM- Company has not responded.
; PRESIDENT’S COUNCIL- Company has not responded.
; MONITORING- Company has not responded.
; BENEFITS- MEDICAL- Company has not responded.
; ARTICLE 5- Company has not responded.
; ARTICLE 6- Company has not responded.
; SERVICE RECOGNITION-Company has not responded.

The union has taken the position that they would agree to just extending the current contract except for adding the same protection for the premise technicians as the rest of the employees, Modest cost of living increase each year, keep jobs here instead of off Shoring them (Such as ADSL Support to India) Training of current employees of new & emerging Technologies
