| If they did that they would loose out on one of the more overlooked beauties of U-Verse. The fact that you don't have to add anything per sey to the buildings themselves. In my case, the condo asso. won't allow external antennas/cables, I don't believe WOW is in my area and even if they were there is no way for them to get into the building. Since U-Verse uses the existing cabling I don't have to ask anyone for any permission to have it installed, thus creating a choice where there was none before. | |

I thought Comcast and some other cable companies were planning on keeping analog, so they could sell cable to confused old people wondering why their TV doesn't work. Comcast is planning on keeping their locals in analog, and making everything else digital. As for the notion that it'll happen by the end of this year, I guess that depends on where you live. They stated that they would hit 20% of their markets by the end of this year, and the rest by 2010. I think they're being a tad overly-optimistic, though. Verizon has been going through this process since April, and it won't complete (analog elimination) until October, and with 1.4 million customers, that's a smaller base than even 20% of Comcast's. Unless they've been making changes without telling anyone since the beginning of this year, I'd say the chances are slim that they'll convert any by the end of this year - not to mention that the lawsuits that you know are going to be coming by consumer advocacy groups.
Verizon had a very small analog customer base, and they got around this issue by offering free adapters to analog customers. We'll see if Comcast does the same thing. Even if they do, considering the size of their analog base, I wouldn't expect them to be able to convert without a fight.
But to answer the question - when Comcast gets rid of their analog channels, yes, they'll have more than enough room to hit 100 HD channels - especially given the 3-1 compression that they do. If you take this market (Philly as an example), Comcast has some 70+ analog channels around here. Assuming that they leave the locals as analog (let's say there are 20 of those), that means that they'll be converting 50 analog channels to digital. Getting rid of those 50 analogs creates 50 QAM slots. Each QAM slot can carry probably 12 - 15 SD channels or 2 - 3 HD channels, given how Comcast slices things up. Which means that those 50 formerly analog channels can all fit in about 4 QAMs. That leaves 46 for other channels. At 2 - 3 HD channels per QAM, that means that they can fit well over 100 NEW HD channels in their lineup.

| Re: Comcast HD Well I'm on Verizon here in Massachusetts- we signed on when they had already gone all-digital here (actually, they were always all-digital from when they deployed in my hometown, but we got free adapters for some of our TVs anyway)
Keeping the analog for locals only would free up quite a bit of space, while still allowing for that oh-so-lucrative granny market (since if they're switching from OTA, all they had were locals anyway), so I can see how that makes sense.

I like the service but the banding and pixelation is annoying. Now i am probably more picky than others but more channels dont impress me. Quality will impress me here. | sorry, att hd still best in the area have uverse, and it looks fabulous in hd and non hd. 42" 1080p plasma tv. I came to uverse for the hd. Its kinda funny watching comcast (not in the area), WOW and TWC (available in the area) sending out "NOW AVAILABLE IN HD" notices, about channels that I have had for months with uverse. Big Ten Network is the big one here not available on TWC yet. TWC hd selection is basically the locals and a few highlight channels. Pay $10 a month and get a handful more. No thanks, kicked TWC to the curb and not looking back.
