Currently at 45 HD channels, would like to be past 100
(old news - 10:07AM Wednesday Aug 13 2008)
tags: business · content · HDTV · AT&T U-Verse
While Verizon says FiOSTV will have between 100 and 150 HD channels by the end of the year, AT&T is remaining ambitious but quiet on any HD specifics, notes Multichannel News. Dan York, AT&T’s executive vice president of content, says that the company would like to see an HD channel count past 100 (they're currently at around 45). He also notes that once AT&T passes a million U-Verse TV customers (they just passed half a million), negotiations with programmers should go more smoothly thanks to bulk discounts, etc. The company says that HD VOD is set to launch soon, but also wouldn't provide any specific dates.

Well...

They could state specifics like Verizon and then be shot down by the masses as they miss their target. It's called you can't win.

Re: Well...

There is little technical issues with putting 100+ Hd channels on Uverse. In fact, there is no real technical barrier outside of what the manufacturer of the hardware makes it to be.

This is a business issue Not a technical issue.

Or... they could state a specific, but be too low that it would not be appealing to the public (aka, say they expect 55 HD by the end of the year... doesn't look that great to potential customers)

They should have gone hybrid

They should have greatly expanded their Dish Network partnership and used all of the copper for HSI which would support DBS VOD like DirecTV's VOD Beta. Dish Network already has mature MPEG4 hardware, advanced (as in a lot of) HD content, so much that they're able to do an all HD platform and 1080P HD VOD (so they claim).

Instead, AT&T elects to half ass it and does both HSI and video poorly.

Have you ever seen Uverse in person? Every channel including non HD is clear and crisp. It's an IP feed so these are the results you are going to get. The non HD channels on Comcast cable sucks.

I saw it at an AT&T store in Austin, the PQ on the HD channels they had up were nothing to write home about, I get a much better HD picture on DirecTV.

If they did that they would loose out on one of the more overlooked beauties of U-Verse. The fact that you don't have to add anything per sey to the buildings themselves. In my case, the condo asso. won't allow external antennas/cables, I don't believe WOW is in my area and even if they were there is no way for them to get into the building. Since U-Verse uses the existing cabling I don't have to ask anyone for any permission to have it installed, thus creating a choice where there was none before.

If you haven't, you might want to check out the FCC's OTARD ruling:

"The OTARD rules prohibit restrictions on a property owner or tenant’s right to install, maintain, or use an antenna to receive video programming from direct broadcast satellites"

I'd rather them just focus on getting channels people want

Than trying to add a bunch of crap to reach the magic "100" number anyway.

We "only" have about 50 HD channels here in LA, but it's a pretty good lineup, and a vast improvement over Time Warner. They've got a lot of the channels I really wanted like Sci Fi HD.

It looks like both AT&T and Verizon are getting QVC HD. Now there's an HD channel to be proud of! LMAO.

Yeah - I don't need/want HD Home Shopping Channel.
Let me guess... HD Weather channel, HD CNN/Fox News (so they can cram more info on the ticker at the bottom).

Comcast HD

Comcast launched a few HD stations recently, FX, big ten network, Fox Business (another great HD choice)

With the bandwidth they will free up in Feburary, do you think they will hit the 100 mark?

Re: Comcast HD

Are you talking about the analog shutdown? I thought Comcast and some other cable companies were planning on keeping analog, so they could sell cable to confused old people wondering why their TV doesn't work.

Comcast is planning on keeping their locals in analog, and making everything else digital. As for the notion that it'll happen by the end of this year, I guess that depends on where you live. They stated that they would hit 20% of their markets by the end of this year, and the rest by 2010. I think they're being a tad overly-optimistic, though. Verizon has been going through this process since April, and it won't complete (analog elimination) until October, and with 1.4 million customers, that's a smaller base than even 20% of Comcast's. Unless they've been making changes without telling anyone since the beginning of this year, I'd say the chances are slim that they'll convert any by the end of this year - not to mention that the lawsuits that you know are going to be coming by consumer advocacy groups.

Verizon had a very small analog customer base, and they got around this issue by offering free adapters to analog customers. We'll see if Comcast does the same thing. Even if they do, considering the size of their analog base, I wouldn't expect them to be able to convert without a fight.

But to answer the question - when Comcast gets rid of their analog channels, yes, they'll have more than enough room to hit 100 HD channels - especially given the 3-1 compression that they do. If you take this market (Philly as an example), Comcast has some 70+ analog channels around here. Assuming that they leave the locals as analog (let's say there are 20 of those), that means that they'll be converting 50 analog channels to digital. Getting rid of those 50 analogs creates 50 QAM slots. Each QAM slot can carry probably 12 - 15 SD channels or 2 - 3 HD channels, given how Comcast slices things up. Which means that those 50 formerly analog channels can all fit in about 4 QAMs. That leaves 46 for other channels. At 2 - 3 HD channels per QAM, that means that they can fit well over 100 NEW HD channels in their lineup.

Re: Comcast HD

Well I'm on Verizon here in Massachusetts- we signed on when they had already gone all-digital here (actually, they were always all-digital from when they deployed in my hometown, but we got free adapters for some of our TVs anyway)

Keeping the analog for locals only would free up quite a bit of space, while still allowing for that oh-so-lucrative granny market (since if they're switching from OTA, all they had were locals anyway), so I can see how that makes sense.

The hd channels are nice but boy are they compressed. THey added some more hd channels since the olympics started. I like the service but the banding and pixelation is annoying. Now i am probably more picky than others but more channels dont impress me. Quality will impress me here. I am still waiting for the hallowed whole home dvr coming this winter.

Re: COMPRESSIONcompression COMPRESSION COMPRESSION COMPRESSION

I thought the U-Verse HD would look worse than it does, especially since they recently cut the rates down to fit 2 HD streams in. It's not great but I can live with it.

I don't think you're going to see higher video quality on U-verse any time soon. They might be able to tweak their codecs a bit, particularly with regards to "stepping" backgrounds on relatively still video. Overall, it's kind of a shame, really. They have a really neat platform that's being severely held back by a weak 25mbps profile.

I've been saying all along that I think AT&T has grossly underestimated the importance of HD. Now it seems like they get it, but a little too late. At least their IPTV platform lends itself to unfettered HD channel additions and HD VOD. They don't need to "make space" or mess with existing channel compression to fit new chanels in.

sorry, att hd still best in the area

have uverse, and it looks fabulous in hd and non hd. 42" 1080p plasma tv. I came to uverse for the hd. Its kinda funny watching comcast (not in the area), WOW and TWC (available in the area) sending out "NOW AVAILABLE IN HD" notices, about channels that I have had for months with uverse. Big Ten Network is the big one here not available on TWC yet. TWC hd selection is basically the locals and a few highlight channels. Pay $10 a month and get a handful more. No thanks, kicked TWC to the curb and not looking back.
