AT&T, Verizon Undecided On LTE Pricing Here's your chance to make your voice heard... Verizon's John Czwartacki this week asked via Twitter what the public's biggest question was surrounding Verizon's upcoming Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless broadband launch this year. Given we know the service will launch in 25-30 markets this year, offering speeds of 5-12 Mbps (probably more around 3-8 Mbps) -- our biggest question remains: what's the price tag, and what kind of caps are we looking at? Judging from the lack of response to that question, Verizon hasn't decided yet. That's what Light Reading concludes as well: AT&T and Verizon Wireless both say they are undecided on how they will charge for Long Term Evolution (LTE) data plans when they are launched over the course of this year and next. . . Its worth thinking about something that is usage-based, but nothing has been decided yet," said Sawanobori. "That's still being looked at," Rinne told the listening audience of press and analysts. Verizon CTO Melone has been more vocal on this issue recently, however, telling The Wall Street Journal: "As much data as you can consume is the big issue that has to change." Of course the pricing models the carriers want to implement involve high ETFs, mandatory data plans, low caps, high overages, and a structure that pretends to offer value, but quietly pushes consumers toward the higher price points whether they use a lot or a little data. While these models are proposed under the auspices of fairness, they're really about charging everybody more money for data -- to counter a future where SMS and voice minutes are supplanted by open networks, mobile VoIP, and smartphone IM clients. In contrast, consumers dealing with an economic recession and layoffs (maybe even from AT&T and Verizon) want data plans that offer them real value (not the illusion of value), and they don't want use of next-generation networks constrained by last-generation caps and pricing. AT&T and Verizon will have to meet consumers somewhere halfway.

I would like to see them offer better fixed wireless plans, start to compete with local wireline broadband providers. LTE should be capable of handling it with some capacity upgrades. So far I think they only offer fixed wireless in some areas that do not have wired broadband (and again I say SOME, not all of those locations). --

| | | | | | | | Re: $60/mo. You just proved my initial point. Comcast does not serve any area around here. The only providers I have (prices are pre-tax/fees):
AT&T aDSL (don't even hold my breath for UVERSE in this area -- actually they have labeled aDSL + DirecTV as UVERSE here) - ~$30 max speed (6/768) bundled with home phone service - ~$45 max speed (6/768) with no home phone (naked DSL)
Local Cable Internet (smaller cable outfit -- not Comcast, TW, etc) - ~$60 max speed (10/1.5) bundled with TV service - ~$40 standard residential (5/512) bundled with TV service - I believe (am not certain) that internet without TV service is ~$10 more than bundled service
All of those speeds & prices have pretty much been stagnant for ~ a decade now. Less than 2 miles from me, my uncle does not have the DSL option. He can only get cable for internet.
As for wireless, only national carriers (T-Mobile, Verizon, ATT, Sprint) offer any kind of wireless internet. Some only offer Smartphone only, some offer Internet with tethering. All have caps. I don't notice any fixed home wireless available in this area from any providers. --

I though 4G was supposed to be this great enw thing that relieves congestion. Not to mention the mobile companies wanting to steal bandwidth form TV. How about the same 250 GB other ISPs offer? Ok I can compromise. 25 GB and 50 cents per GB overage with a $50 max overage charge.
| | | | So basically you're asking for what tmobile gives you now for half of what you just listed you are willing to pay.
Tmobile 30 a month data plan, tether all you want no additional charge. 10GB cap.

I'm paying roughly $80/Month for 900 minutes & 500 txt messages, and I don't use the internet on my phone.
If I were to upgrade my phone (which has a broken front touchscreen), I'd get stuck with their $69.99 unlimited talk/text, *AND* the [now forced] $29.99 data plan. So my monthly would go up at least $20 plus whatever new taxes and fees they stick onto the data plan.
It doesn't make me happy. I've been wanting to get my daughter a phone and maybe get onto a family share plan, but I don't have $200/month to throw at Verizon for it.
I like my Voyager but not because it can get on the net. I like it because it has a full qwerty keyboard for texting. And I shouldn't be penalized $30/month for a data plan I never use. (And yes I know this subject has been brought up many times before).
They tried to "trick" us with those "buy one get one free" droid/eris phones. That's another thing that chaps my hide. I don't want to wait god knows how long for the equivalent of a $200 rebate. I don't have $400 to drop right now, AND get stuck with the new pricing plan as well. Hell I'm still waiting for a $20 rebate on a stick of ram I bought in January. I see those promotions as nothing more than a ploy to get people to change their pricing plan (due to the new phone) and get stuck with the data plan.

While the customer service is lousy, once you're signed up and use the web interface to recharge, you'd save a bundle switching to Page Plus: the 1200 minute/1200 text plan is $29.95/month ($25-26 with discounts). Walmart/Tracphone's Straight Talk $30 plan (1000 minutes / 1000 texts) would also work, though your phone options are more limited.

I'm not what you would call an early adopter, or even a technophile that has to have all the latest gadgets. But I do like quality and innovative products and would rather be seen with a droid or an eris on my hip than a razor.
My daughter has been bugging me for a phone for about 2 years now. I'll more than likely cave in within the next year and get her something. But if that were to be through Verizon, my bill would end up somewhere around $189/month for the plan I'd need to support her activities as well as mine... and that's NUTS!
She may end up with one of those pre-paid walmart dealies...which could suck because I remember when I was a kid - I got picked on for wearing "fake" vans...

| Unlimited Plan There should be an option where someone can use all the data they want, for one fixed monthly price. The actual price? $100/mo. wouldn't be unreasonable, though lower is better of course. This would be just for a laptop card, no mobile phone included.
I don't know how many people would purchase an unlimited option at $100/mo., but I know that it would be an extremely attractive option to some. I think of road warriors, truck drivers, and those where satellite is the only other option (if that can even be called an "option").

| Why would anyone expect it to be cheaper ? They will market this is a higher end faster speed service, so it there are very little chances that it will be cheaper.
The big question is whether there will be low cost entry points (such as $5.00 for 50mb (real internet access including thethering) for casual use ) or whether data plans will start at $30 and nothing below.

"I wish it was available now." "I wish it was reasonably priced." "I wish there's no cap so that I can dump my home DSL or cable."
I have two words for you: SPRINT 4G
Sprint has 4G/WiMax up and running in 27 markets RIGHT NOW!
Sprint is charging $60 Flat.
Sprint 4G is UNLIMITED, UNCAPPED in all 4G markets.
Sprint will have the first 4G handset by HTC by THIS SUMMER.
What is WRONG with some of you people? You're like some battered wives / Girlfriends that keep complaining about being abusing, but yet you keep going back to the same guy, or date guys like that. In this case Verizon and at&t.
The US consumer in general DESERVES to be ripped off by Verizon and at&t.
