Until they figure out a good implementation during service interruptions people are gambling price for quality.
I see all voip failing in the not to distant future maybe 10 years at most and products like skype becoming just voice messaging services.
Although it may bring down costs of services I doubt it will do much damage to telco once people find out what works and what don't. -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!"

Have to disagree with you there. I've been working with VoIP systems for the past 6 years now. I supported a major presidential candidate's office that was using VoIP in the 2004 election. I've implemented VoIP systems in the past three companies I've worked for. I've also used them in the past 4 companies I've worked for. They didn't consider the investment in VoIP technology investing in a "toy".
And that's just the business side. When I moved into my new home last year, we opted to use VoIP instead of a land line. It sucked for the first few months because we had a lousy ISP (Time Warner Broadband/RoadRunner) with an unreliable connection. We ditched TW/RR and got the fastest residential DSL available with Bellsouth and have not had ANY problems since. We're using Vonage and, with the new DSL connection, have not had any quality degradation. I don't have to pay $60 anymore for simple land line phone service with long distance. I pay half that and get reliable, unlimited free long distance with great sound quality. I won't be getting rid of my VoIP service "toy" any time soon.

| Re: But they will fall But your a techie , when will people realize they are not the norm in this world.
I have been working with the folks from a tech company tieing voip to their home service , so they can telecommute and use their extensions and stuff from home to support a client base. Not all are technical.
These people decided they would ditch a landline because voip was cheaper and they would just use the work number and get another number for home use. They had an emergency with a car accident in their yard and they couldn't call out to 911 on voip. When it did it went to the local police office of a station 35 miles or more away.
Funny the guy who drove through their wall was ok , but ho knows what would have happened had one of the kids been on the family pc when the car went through the wall. What would have happened ?
Companies don't need 911 as much as a home does. Arguably they do but in reality they don't , to cut costs for some ones life and gambling is not my idea of a real solution.
When voip and pots can terminate into the same 911 trunks then you can move to voip faster. -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!"

| | | | | | Re: But they will fall First, things have come a long way in the past few years. My father and other family members are all on the web...and using it without calling me every 5 minutes. My mother in law and best friend (complete end-user types) both have VoIP phones at home. My mother in law lives overseas now and uses her VoIP solution as a cost effective way to keep in touch with her friends and family back in the US. My best friend has 3 children, but with multiple cell phones at home she wasn't too worried about 911 service.
And, by the way, techies aren't abnormal. The world is fast catching up to us.
That said, I can only name one person over the age of 16 that I know who doesn't have a cell phone. My VoIP phone has gone out because my DSL went down a few times...but when that didn't work my cell phone did. Had some jackhole driven through my wall, I would have used my cell phone to call the cops. If I didn't use my cell, I could have used my husband's cell, my neighbor's phone or cell, the jackhole's cell...etc. There are ways to get help if you really need it. Hell, whenever something happens in my neighborhood, the cops have usually been alerted by multiple neighbors. If someone crashed into my neighbor's house, I'd be on the phone to the cops in a heartbeat. As would 10 other neighbors.
I'll give you one thing, 911 service to VoIP isn't up to par yet. However, if you still have other viable options, its not that big of a deal. By the way, I'm 6 months pregnant and have VoIP at home. My pregnancy has a bit of a high risk, yet I wasn't concerned enough to get rid of my VoIP service. I have three different cell phones here. I'd much rather save that hundred dollars a month and add them to my kid's college fund. There are more people like me out there than you think.

Is there more competition now? Are your phone rates lower?
My feeling is that all of these companies collude in order to rip off the consumers for more of their hard earned money. Now that Bush has laxed the regulations on monopolies, we are going back to one uber telephone company. And without government intervention, they will be able to charge whatever they like.

It was merged into GTE in the late 1990's.
Edit-Here in CA, Contel of California merged with GTE in 1997.
