AT&T's Eager To Sell New Wireless Gadgets
Carrier aims to counter slower wireless growth, possible iPhone loss
by Karl Bode Wednesday 22-Jul-2009 tags: business · telco · wireless
Business Week notes that AT&T's traditional wired phone service is shrinking by about 10% a year, and wireless growth has slowed just enough that it won't make up the difference in lost revenue. The carrier will also eventually lose their contract as the exclusive carrier of the iPhone. In order to counter these expected losses, Business Week notes that the carrier is interested in directly selling things like cameras, computers, and an E-book reader (see today's Times) to ramp up use of their 3G (and ultimately LTE) network. Of course, AT&T may impose their 5GB cap and overage charges on these new gadgets, making up that lost revenue in short order from people with $11,000 mobile data bills.

increase use?

They want to increase use of their 3G network that they already claim can't handle the load it is already serving? That's so AT&T.

Re: increase use?

Yeah isn't it?

Why don't they spend time investing into their network and improving it. By putting out a high-quality wireless service they'd be able to attract more customers and hopefully retain some of the people who are planning on jumping ship once AT&T loses iPhone exclusivity.

But I suppose to a big business like AT&T improving your product and increasing customer satisfaction to gain new customers and reduce churn is too logical and consumer-friendly to even be considered.

It doesn't seem to work for T-Mobile. Why would ATT do that?

Re: increase use?

ATT's growth at the expense of quality and customer service certainly hasn't hurt them until this point. Why change anytime soon?

Darth and Crew

With the Deathstars landlines diminishing so quickly, they'll also be cutting back on maintenence budgets for dsl services. They may be saving that money for LTE deployment, but the deployment itself will be over some pulled teeth.

Jeez Louise ATT?!?!?!

Really?!?!?! REALLY?!?!?!

I think I speak for us all ATT when I say that the ONLY thing we want you to spend money on is upgrading your 3G networks to an acceptable speed. Stop wasting money on this other crap. You are loosing focus on what should be your primary goal.

AT&T doesn't have to spend hardly anything at all to encourage use of their network by Plastic Logic & Barnes & Nobel and their new devices. And since that is a multi-year effort, waiting to develop those ties with device makers would be stupid.

They are spending money to upgrade their network - billions of dollars of expenditures. And that can be done in parallel with developing new uses for the network.

Re: Jeez Louise ATT?!?!?!

the problem with that tk is they then inflict a low cap on usage. And they can't dedicate all of the resources they do have to 3g. They offer other services such as dsl that need to be maintained.
I've always thought of dsl as buying time until a real network came along. But since AT&T is content on milking copper for another hundred years, they will have to devote some money to maintain it.

Billions of dollars is a very vague and inconsequential appraisal of their network investments. A company of that size and scale obviously will have to invest "billions of dollars", but the real question is what % of their revenue and profit is going into upgrading their network?

Are you a current AT&T customer?

If not, you have no position to comment on service that you do not have.

Their network is useless..

I live in an EDGE area and it's completely worthless to me. My connection drops all the time and when it is up I am lucky if I'm getting 10kbps. I am disgusted and ready to cancel data service all together and stop using the iPhone. If they don't get their act together, I will be switching and bringing all four lines with me.

Geeze..

Does this site ever just report the news anymore without the snide, biased editorial comments?

FCC should look into iPhone billing. ATT lied to me.

I may sue them.

No, i'm not a crackpot. I was waiting for a credit for several things, that were supposed to make this month's bill be in the back 150 bucks, but instead, i receive a bill, asking for 178 dollars..... They also confirmed with several phone calls that my text plan was $20/mo for unlimited. Now it's magically $30. So i'm paying $30 for data, and $30 for text... Even my last bill (the first one with iPhone) had texting at $20, so i'm not sure what the hell is going on.

And of course, there are no notes on any of this, it's just like magic that i randomly call in expecting a credit of a sizable amount, i must be a moron that needs the billing explained to him, sorry but i've had these folks since 2005 and i know how to read their bills.

The guy says "if you want a refund you have to go through our e-commerce dept". This was all documented, in notes on the account, i even called and asked why my LAST bill was $2xx.xx vs in the black... They explained "oh, sorry sir, it looks like they have several credits that will hit next billing period", the reason you were denied free exchange of equipment (i had asked just to ask to see if we could get the 3Gs not that i really cared if i got a yes or no) is because there was a limit on the credits issued for your account, so maybe you can call back in a few months but right now there's no more we can do".

So now you can see how they lied to me.

Believe me though, i'm getting the money they promised me or i will see them in court.

I know i posted this other places, but something has to be done. Why is it legal to charge 30 dollars a month for a service that costs the carriers nothing, plus lie to me about it? Anyone with similar experience PM me, perhaps we can develop a CA lawsuit and end the the legal muggings.
