story category AT&T's 'Quiet' $10 DSL Gets Noticed
Still no official announcement.......
(old news - 04:55PM Monday Jun 18 2007)
tags: dsl · prices · telco
Tipped by nunya See Profile
Over the weekend, we confirmed that AT&T had started offering customers $10 768kbps DSL as a BellSouth merger condition, though they apparently had hoped nobody would notice. While AT&T would comment to us that the deal existed, they wouldn't comment on whether they'd be announcing or advertising the plan. The Associated Press has now discovered the deal, making that kind of a moot point, given their reach. As previously mentioned, the deal, which AT&T told us is available across their entire footprint, requires a one-year contract, a bundled landline and is only available to new customers.

I called up AT&T for this offer for my uncle...

I called up AT&T for this offer for my uncle... and they shut me down by telling me it was only being offer to the southside aka Ex-SouthBell customers. What about the rest of us?

Wrong. It is only for customer in the former Bellsouth area.

Negative. People have to order "online"

How is pointing to the webform confirmation? I remember reading that it was only required as a merger condition in the Bellsouh region. I'll have to dig that up.

Nope, I already have DSL so I didn't bother trying. Just got in, so I haven't had time to find that reference. I could be wrong, but I'll try to dig it up.

I told my cousin about that offer yesterday. He called and At&t told him the exact same thing (for bell south only). Is this official or are they breaking the law here somehow?

Re: I called up AT&T for this offer for my uncle...

They're probably not breaking the law. This is probably exactly why there hasn't been an official announcement yet -- because obviously even AT&T doesn't know the details of their own offers. From what I read of the original article, it sounds to me like AT&T was required to offer this promo as a result of their BellSouth acquisition... maybe they were only required to extend it to former BellSouth customers.

Re: I called up AT&T for this offer for my uncle...

I READ the letter.
Plus, I checked the URL; I can get the $10 deal and I'm in ex-PacBell area. Folks in ex-PacBell or ex-Nevada Bell areas never knew their ILEC as "BellSouth". They've heard of "SBC".
The letter reads in part:
Within six months of the Merger Closing Date, and continuing for at least 30 months
from the inception of the offer, AT&T/BellSouth will offer to retail consumers in the Wireline
Buildout Area, who have not previously subscribed to AT&T's or BellSouth's ADSL service, a
broadband Internet access service at a speed of up to 768 Kbps at a monthly rate
(exclusive of any applicable taxes and regulatory fees) of $ 10 per month.
The normal meaning of a '/' in English is that it's shorthand for 'or'....

And anyone want to give odds on how often someone won't be able to get DSL at all because their CO doesn't have enough equipment on hand with no plans to add more??

This doesnt happen as often as the cable companies would lead you to believe.

Its actually pretty rare to have a full CO/RT.

@bellsouth.net

This cannot be true because I am a former Bellsouth customer and they would not let me sign up for it. They told me I would have to keep on paying 24.99/mo for the lite service and that the 10.00/mo service was only being offered to NEW customers. I then asked about having mine cut off and cut back on and they told me that would be a 60 day process. RIGHT!

The Terms state you must not have *any* AT&T/Bellsouth/SBC Broadband for the previous 12 months. Not 60 Days. It is only for new customers, not existing people. Read the details. Thank the FCC.

check out the bellsouth DSL page - the lowest tier they offer (768k/128k) is currently "limited time offer!" for $19.95 ("regular" price was $24.95). I think when I checked this out for my dad (they live in bellsouth territory), you have to be a new customer and sign up for a year contract to get this "limited time offer!" special price.

It seems they are trying to lock in as many new customers as possible at twice the $10 rate before people know there is a $10 rate.

They will acknowledge the $10 rate if you ask (I asked thru an online chat rep), but only the $19.95 rate is advertised on the web page.

I want to get naked!

Also mentioned was the fact that they need to offer naked DSL. Coming in 6 months? I hope this isn't limited to just those that haven't had their DSL before.

Re: I want to get naked!

I'm still waiting for the naked DSL. I've been calling them for the past few months and given same BS that they don't know anything about an FCC stipulation AT&T must offer naked DSL for $19.95. They point me to the $44.99 which that is waaay overpriced.

The CSRs aren't going to be authorities on FCC stipulations unless some one higher up has told them about it.

What do you want 768/128 naked DSL for? That is pretty minimal broadband.

768/128 for twenty bucks is hardly worth it even if it is "naked", and that's all they are required to provide. Has it been 12 months yet?

No, it has been twelve months. Also, it may seem "hardly worth it" but when you see your bill I'd rather have to pay only twenty bucks, than the twenty bucks, plus the land line, plus the taxes, plus whatever f***ing fees they want to tack on.

I understand perfectly. You, however, seem to be dense as granite.

Why would you want to pay $20/mo for 768/128 when you can get much faster speeds for about $10 more including the POTS line?

Keep flogging yourself with that chip on your shoulder though. Makes no difference to me or anyone else.

Great for a while...

Only for 2.5 yrs as part of the merger conditions.
But hey it's great in the mean time.
What else will it take for folks to get off of dialup?..

Oh ya, you have to be close enough to DSL enabled CO or RT.

That is rather slow, for me. A little better than dial but not much. Its perfect for people who are coming off dial and want cheap DSL and maybe someone who has never really used a fast connection.

Its AT&T tho and I would have serious reservations with their current plans that would impede on its users privacy.

This would be wonderfull if the even HAD DSL!! My lake house in Oak Grove, Alabama where I now spend most of my time can't even get bellsouth DSL yet. There is no cable internet either! I am stuck with Nextel WiDEN or Satellite.
