AT&T Gives Status ReportiPhone activation count worries Wall Street ( old news - 02:42PM Tuesday Jul 24 2007) Tipped by JSRoman AT&T posted a 61% increase in second-quarter earnings today, though that's thanks to its buyout of BellSouth. In addition to continued landline losses, DSL sales slumped, with 439,000 added last quarter -- down from the 691,000 new DSL customers added the quarter before. AT&T reports 51,000 total U-Verse subscribers. Wireless is where the growth is happening for AT&T. However, Wall Street is apparently grumpy that fewer iPhones were activated during the first two days of sales than anticipated (146,000 reported compared to 500,000 predicted). Apple shares fell on the news, though we're guessing both AT&T and Apple will be just fine.

AT&T (Mobility?) isn't bad... too bad they sold a crippled product for $$$$ AT&T Landline still is the countries largest DSL / ISP.
I've been MUCH happier with AT&T (Mobility?) than I was with Verizon Wireless. Too many billing issues, CS problems, dropped calls.

| 146,000 registrations?
I wonder why there were only 146,000 registrations when it has been widely reported that 700,000 iPhones were sold? I understand why the numbers might not match, exactly, but it seems like they should be a lot closer than that.
So, did 550,000 people buy iPhones just to use as iPods? Or, is the sales figure of 700,000 just another pipe dream?
Wait, here's another idea. 550,000 phones were bought by saps who thought they would buy them for $600 and sell them for $1200 into a sold-out market. Ha ha ha!

Tim Sales of the iPhone began just 30 hours before the official end of the AT&T fiscal second quarter. That 146,000 is the total number of activations that occurred in that 30 hours. This is from the AT&T announcement:
"Sales of the Apple iPhone have been robust. The June 29 launch allowed for less than two days of sales and activations before the end of the quarter. In that time, AT&T activated 146,000 iPhone subscribers, more than 40 percent of them new subscribers. Sales of the iPhone continue to be strong in July with store traffic above historical levels."
The number of iPhones sold to date will be much higher because of that.

| Re: 146,000 registrations?
I tend to agree. They seemed to think everyone would activate their phones, immediately. But, due to system glitches, many people were unable to. Although another article I saw today says that AT&T says only 2% or fewer iPhone activators had problems activating that first weekend.
Also, everyone is talking about "two days", when it was really only one day and six hours, because the iPhone did not go on sale until 6 PM, Friday evening.

Still 146k vs. 700k estimated is quite a discrepancy. I wonder how much the activation problems hurt those numbers and also if they take into account the phones sold by Apple stores.

| Time Will Tell I think it is safe to say that those numbers (may) improve as the current cellular contracts of current and future iPhone buyers come to and end. Those numbers dont include purchases made directly from Apple.
But it could also be any of the following: 1. People arent willing to pay that much the iPhone 2. Don't wanna be stuck with AT&T 3. Afraid of the all in one device scenario

| How many iPhones were returned, or will be before 30 days? Buyers remorse I'm sure claimed a large portion of those numbers.
For most people, dropping $500 on a new phone is not a reality. Many people that did buy them, did so on a credit card (very stupid) or used already accounted for funds (ie, mortgage/rent, bills, ect). And sometimes, after all the fun and attention to "you" wears off, you're just left with an expensive phone.
I wouldn't doubt that many of the people that bought them never intended to activate it. Or, if they did see that "cute" gadget, was scared off at the time of activation after they seen how much one line of service would really cost. -- :: my trivial ramblings ::

| 146,000 activations != 146,000 sold Activations is not the same as sold. Being that most new subscribers were reporting 20+ hours to activate a phone I would be willing to bet that many more phones were sold. The 2% of users having problems is questionable based on posts and personal experience for new subscribers. | |

Another almost TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND LANDLINES bit the old dust.
Yep..that's right. In just one quarter..there goes another 1/4 million.
And you know what? I think if I was a TELEPHONE company..I might find that just a teeny weeny bit concerning.
But hey..that's not all..is it?
Remember that next generation video..voice and HSI service we've been hearing so much about? You know..the one that for what seems FOREVER now has been rolling out to all kinds of cities across this great land of ours.
Well, guess what kids... You know how many customers they've managed to sign up for it?
Hold on to your seats folks. It's a real whopper.
51,000.
Yep..that's right. FIFTY ONE THOUSAND people have flocked to AT&T's door for the latest in copper technology.
I mean, doesn't it seem like AGES ago that the AT&T fanclub was telling us the number was 40,000. And so, in between THEN..and todays earnings release..they've managed to really sock it too the cable industry, by adding another 11,000 customers.
Ya know what? Like I've said over..and over and over.. when you have a telco this size..and they're losing that many landlines..and their next generation uverse service is this much of a failure to date...you really don't have very much left now, do you?
Well, of course..they do have the Iphone.
Is it any wonder that the market is now panicking over those numbers?

| No 3g If you are willing to spend that kind of money on a phone, wouldn't you expect it to have the most recent technology? No way in hell I'd spend $500 on a phone that can't do 3g. I waited for a price drop on the 8525 and I'm happy. I wasn't willing to spend $399. Got a refurb for $99. | |

As for price, my Treo 700w was $600 w/ 2y contract when I got it from Verizon (when the model just came out) and it sucks. It's just par for the course with brand new stuff. -- Macintosh Users Group Serving the Inland Empire

| Wow, how about a little perspective U-Verse, yeah they're at 51,000, a 300% increase in subcribers from the 1st quarter. Pretty good.
Revenue is nearly double what it was the prevous year, margins are up from 19 to 24%.
Over 400,000 new DSL adds..that is still great but shy of the absolutely insane 700,000 adds previously.
And no one in their right mind expected a 1/2 million iPhone ACTIVATIONS in LESS THAN 2 days. 150K activations in less than 2 days of sales ain't shabby. Certainly far more were sold that weekend that weren't activated by the time the qtr closed. And of course sales have been robust since then. And nearly 1/2 of those activations were non-AT&T subs...either their first phone or I would guess the former customer of a competitor.
All of the news is good for AT&T except for their continued bleeding of POTS customers due to overpriced options like Caller ID.
And call the iPhone an over hyped, over priced, crash happy POS that is open to attacks, 8GB ain't enough memory and while I can afford a $600 phone I can't afford an $80 battery and all the other hater nonsense...the iPhone has been a huge success for both Apple and AT&T. AT&T is snaking subs from their competitors while Apple makes profit not only on the phone, but a share of the $60+/mo service fees customers are paying every month. -- Macintosh Users Group Serving the Inland Empire

| 700,000 says who? First of all, the numbers mentioned before the ATT statement (and Apple's coming tomorrow) were just speculation. They were uneducated guesses.
Second, there were *at least* 146,000 sold, since its probably that not 100% of sold phones were activated. Many new buyers (including me) had trouble activating in the 30 hours and may not have been counted.
And third, selling and activating 146,000 $500 to $600 gadgets in 30 hours is a phenominal feat. (This high load likely explains the activation problems incurred).
For a real picture, wait for the next quarter.
