AT&T Video Share Goes Nationwide
160 markets can now pay AT&T more money!

Click for full size
AT&T last month launched their new Video Share service, which lets wireless phone users transmit one-way video during conversation. You can pay $4.99 a month for 25 minutes of Video Share usage or $9.99 each month for 60 minutes. You can also "pay as you go" for 35 cents per minute of use.

The company today says they're now offering the service nationally in 160 markets. Eventually, the company wants the service to mesh with U-Verse:
quote:
Ultimately, services such as Video Share will be accessible over any of the three primary screens that customers use most frequently — the wireless device, the PC and the television. AT&T Labs researchers today are perfecting service enhancements that eventually will enable wireless video feeds to be shared over IPTV or PC screens.
Of course, you can't share your monkey video if your neighborhood doesn't have 3G service. They're also charging you extra for this when you already pay a monthly fee for an "unlimited data" plan whose TOS prohibits you from streaming any other video.

Charging when you already pay

So you're already paying to send and receive data, but they are going to charge you more for sending/receiving this particular data?

And people are complaining that T-mobile is charging for @home. Hmpff.

Only if you hand your money over. I don't think anyone is forced to video share.

I wonder if any of the cell carriers understand unlimited for extra 5 bucks. I am lucky that the old sprint pcs vision (not power vision) gave me that complete unlimited data and text all in one package for 10, which is now free. 700 min prime, free nights & weekends, unlim data/text for $55.

Re: Charging when you already pay

yes, it is still open. I had a friend do it last week and he got the following.

500 minutes
unlimited powervision
unlimited roaming
unlimited TXT
unlimited PIX TXT
nights at 7pm

$35 with taxes. I used a code to get an addition 200 minutes a month and $50 credit. The info is all in the forum posts.

$50 credit each month? Or just one time?

Also, can you add the 200 minutes code any time you want? If so, could I have the code? I'd be really interested in adding that to my SERO line.

Does the direction really matter? That's like everyone (including myself) that thinks all internet connections should be symmetrical.

People aren't going to go for this except maybe some spoiled kids. The only logical reason to keep these boutique services overpriced is because they don't have the back-end bandwidth to handle everyone doing it. It's not a shock that people won't pay $10 a month for this thing when they should be paying once for the application to do it.

Really, what is the deal with slow backends on mobile networks? If Verizon can bring FIOS to people's home's, why aren't they doing the same to their cell towers?

Re: ha

Wireless is fundamentally different from wired. It is a serial medium (imagine running 50 people in a room all trying to be heard by the whole group, vs those same 50 people all writing messages on signs for everyone to read), where FIOS is more a parallel medium.

In order for them to provide FIOS like connections on the cell towers, they would have to give each connected phone its own frequency (probably 3-6 megahertz of it). I don't know how big their spectrum chunk is, but I highly doubt it is 300-600 megahertz (assuming they don't have any overlapping coverage from other towers, which would force them to have more than one spectrum chunk, or reduce the number of concurrent connections and/or bandwidth).

Re: ha

Not exactly...FiOS is a serial connection. It's simply faster. Mobile service, until very recently, used traditional TDM service to deliver services, and those leased lines were expensive. technology improvements are shifting towards IP as the means of delivery. Better utilization of resources, and better speeds, but not all areas have been updated.

Re: ha

yeah that's what I meant, the tower use a cheap/reliable connection with a lot of speed, not that each individual cell phone be as fast as FIOS. Basically if WiFi devices can be always on at 1-10Mbps or higher why not cell phones? I don't know what TDM service is but IP is a pretty well proven low cost technology

Funny...

I was watching an iPhone commercial about how it could stream YouTube videos (and even showed it streaming the video of a skateboard riding dog). You really would think the advert makers would read the TOS as well. Makes me wonder how many people would ACTUALLY pay the cash to have video sharing.

Why pay to moon your wife via the phone when you can go home and do it for free in person?

And if you get real lucky....she might moon you back

More add-ons in an attempt to get $$$

Just like when the original AT&T Wireless allowed free incoming text/mms/sms (w/o any text or data plan).

I'd take an email client on MEdiaNet and forward video clips vs. sending through video share.

This crap is a RIP OFF!

I have maybe sent 10 picture messages in my life, and maybe 4 video messages. In fact, I probably sent them all within about 10 minutes of one another and then it got really old. Either way, this "Video Share" crap is stupid. The slogan is "Video Share Shows It Live". Ok......and??? Why do you need to send one way (not two way mind you!) video in real time? Isnt it much easier, and cheaper, to take a video clip using your phone and then (gasp!) use your MMS that you already pay for to send a video message? I suppose the fact that its "live" as opposed to "15 seconds ago" means its worth $10 a month.

Good point. I just realized something: $0.16, $0.20, and $0.35 per minute? Are you f*#ing' nuts?

know what the app is called? I wouldn't pay for a service like this, but I would be interested in testing it out, just for the heck of it, if it were free (I have a Windows Mobile phone....and I have Sprint's unlimited data so...heheh).

Re: Old news

Perhaps Fox McCloud was referring to Pocket Caster? It is by the company comvu ( www.comvu.com ) and is currently free. I once used it at the state capitol building in Austin to give a tour to my parents up in Illinois. I was able to connect to a wi-fi access point and therefore have a higher speed upload while being able to use the phone so that I could answer questions, etc. that my parents asked. it is fairly nifty, but I do not use it that often.
