$600-$700 if you want to avoid a contract

AT&T has released additional iPhone pricing details. The third-generation HSDPA-supported iPhone will be available in AT&T Stores starting July 11 at 8 a.m. The $199 (8GB) and $299 (16GB) pricing has conditions: in order to get the reduced pricing, you need to have purchased a first-gen iPhone before July 11, be activating a new customer line with AT&T, or be an existing AT&T customer eligible for phone upgrade (in all cases you'll need to sign a new two-year contract). AT&T also has this to say:
Existing AT&T customers who are not currently eligible for an upgrade discount can purchase iPhone 3G for $399 for the 8GB model or $499 for the 16GB model. . . Current AT&T customers who are upgrading to iPhone 3G will pay an $18 upgrade fee and new AT&T customers will pay the standard $36 activation fee.
Should you not want a contract, you'll need to pay $599 for the 8GB and $699 for the 16GB model. AT&T says this option won't be available at launch, but sometime "in the future."

Pray that HTC has gotten better at building phones. I know three people with 8525s, and while they're great phones (as far as Windows Mobile allows them to be, anyway), the hardware is not reliable at all. My roommate's been through 4 of them, he's on his fifth. The other two are both on their second unit. Three people, 9 phones, 6 failures. The list:

Phone 1) Screen failure (went dark). Bad keyboard backlight.
Phone 2) Bad keyboard. Also had bad keyboard backlight
Phone 3) Touch screen failure
Phone 4) Lasted a while. Screen fades to white.
Phone 5) External speaker failed. Cannot hear ring.
Phone 6) Cannot stay connected to call for more than about 20 seconds.

I'd be very leery of a refurb product made by them. All three users are people who take pretty good care of their phones.

Maybe I'll go with a Motorola Q9h instead.
Its a bit of a brick, and doesn't have WiFi, but is supposed to be pretty durable for a PDA, and have good RF.

Item #6 sounds like my Samsung ZX-20 with 3G.

I had the HTC 8525 and upgraded to the 8925 (the tilt). I have had no problems since the tilt hit the market in October of 2007. It is head and shoulders above the 8525. The tilt regularly wins or scores highly in reviews compared to other PDAs. It has tons of features that make the touch screen users happy at the same time pleasing QWERTY fans. It also has a 3MP camera WM6, GPS, great 3G service as well as wifi. The very well received Euro version (also called TYTN II or Kaiser) has the rear camera as well as a front-facing camera for video conferencing (that ATT removed). The next generation is coming out in August I think (this time with non-tilting sliding QWERTY keyboard). So the price should come down even more.

I have both tilt and the iphone. The only thing iphone does better is the safari browser.

Tilt basically kills everything else. The 3mp cam is decent and maybe when skyfire is public safaris browser wont be so missed.

I have a T-Mobile Wing (aka HTC Herald) and it has been pretty reliable. Before T-Mobile put up a new tower quite a bit closer to my house reception was spotty there, but it was that way with the 5 or 6 T-mobile phones we've owned over the years so I can't blame the Wing.

The only two downsides that I don't like about the Wing is the pre-installed apps that T-Mobile puts on are quite bloted, but flashing the ROM took care of that and made the phone much more responsive. The other is that the sliding mechanism as loosened up over the past year and a half. Not to the point where it's a problem, but when I first got it you could barely fit a sheet a paper in between the halves. Now it slides in easily. It still stays shut though no problem.

Is my Wing the same as the iPhone? No. Does it have a lot of the same functionality? Some. Can I run custom apps that I or others develop without asking for permission? Piece of cake. Did I have to spend $700 for it? Hell no.

It sounds wordy but it's all pretty standard stuff. Just like the rest of AT&T's phones, you have to be either a new customer, or eligible for an upgrade. The only thing unusual here is the exception for iPhone 1.0 users.

Clarification

Karl, you should clarify the fact that all options require a two-year contract:

iPhone 3G will be available for $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model. These prices require two-year contracts and are available to the following customers:

* iPhone customers who purchased before July 11
* Customers activating a new line with AT&T
* Current AT&T customers who are eligible, at the time of purchase, for an upgrade discount

Re: Clarification

And this is what you will pay to use your new iPhone 3G if you get one:

* AT&T NationSM Unlimited: Includes unlimited Anytime Minutes for $129.99 a month.
* AT&T Nation 1350: Includes 1350 Anytime Minutes and unlimited Night & Weekend Minutes for $109.99 a month.
* AT&T Nation 900: Includes 900 Anytime Minutes and unlimited Night & Weekend Minutes for $89.99 a month.
* AT&T Nation 450: Includes 450 Anytime Minutes and 5,000 Night & Weekend Minutes for $69.99 a month.

All AT&T Nation and AT&T FamilyTalk® plans for iPhone 3G include nationwide long distance and roaming, Visual Voicemail, Rollover®, unlimited Mobile to Mobile calling, Call Forwarding, Call Waiting, Three-Way Calling and Caller ID.

AT&T will offer FamilyTalk plans, with bundled voice and unlimited data, starting as low as $129.99 a month for two iPhone 3G lines. Up to three additional iPhone lines can be added for $39.99 each.

Unlimited text messaging can be added for an additional $20 ($30 for FamilyTalk plans of up to five lines); $15 (1,500 messages), or $5 (200 messages).
So the cheapest you can get away with will cost you $75/mo plus any gov't taxes, fees, etc they add on to the bill.

Re: Clarification

That's 59.99, not 69.99 for the 450 minute plan. I just checked earlier. iPhone's plan (i have 450 right now on my razr) would be 12 dollars more a month TOTAL for me. As in, i get 200 texts, unlimited data, etc, but everything else the same for twelve more dollars a month with iPhone. People need to stop misrepresenting the cost of the plans, even if its by accident. as soon as i get more reliable income i'm getting an iPhone.

Quite true, and what's with this $18 or $36 upgrade fee?
The first gen iPhone data plans were quite fair, and the price for the phone was (after the price reduction) very much in line with market forces (obviously)... but these new plans are going to at least after the "newness" wears off be a harder sell unless the economy turns around.

We'll see in 10 days.

These things will fly off the shelves. I don't plan on getting one, I need tactile keys myself but everyone else I know wants one. My brother's father in law who is over 60 has a 1st gen iPhone. I don't think he even owns a computer. Brand recognition is out there for these things.

One of the best things about the iPhone when it first came out was that it is a smartphone with a reasonable data plan attached to it. An all in one data plan at a pretty good price.

Now it doesn't have that. Apple is going to let AT&T screw this one up for them. The only saving grace is that the iPhone will be sold in other countries. That will only take it so far.

Re: Round 2- Economy vs iPhone

If they are upgrading, they must like the product enough to stick with the company and buy an upgraded version. I don't think many in Japan are upgrading though.

I like my Windows Smartphone. When the time comes, I'll buy another Windows Smartphone. This goes to show, people are still spending. All of these American buyers are willingly paying $15/month in service or whatever the price is.

No shit.

I used to have the data plan with my Verizon cell phone (V Cast, so it didn't eat my minutes) and a TXT message plan.

I dropped both. Sure, I miss having the convenience of having internet on my cell phone (not a smart phone), but I can live without it. saved $10/mo.

I dropped a lot of things in the past 6 months. Digital cable, the comprehensive/collision insurance on the car, the DVR box.

I'm looking for more "frills" to cut. I plan on paying my bills on time.

A pricey phone with a very expensive data plan? Anyone signing up for that should be thinking twice.

Besides, 3 of my co workers have iPhones. They hate them. It was an impulse buy and they wish they had the money back. Now they're stuck for another year.

Glad I didn't get one, and I won't be buying one...

Oh, I'm still earning money. I'm just not spending it on things like iPhones and data plans.

I'm directing the bulk of my disposable income to debt reduction and maintaining an emergency fund.

I'm not really feeling the pinch per se. I'm relatively underpaid for my education level, but that comes with public service and I understand that.

But, I think things are going to get a whole lot worse before they get better (wait until winter when folks here on the East Coast have to heat their homes) and the smart position is to forgo such niceties until things improve.

I'm not the only one thinking this way right now....

WTF! So now we pay $10/mo more for 3G AND $5/mo for 200 text messages? What's with the nickel and dime approach AT&T? Why there is even a charge for text messages when you have an unlimited data plan is beyond me.

Because they can, and there is nothing we can do about it but complain or not buy.

Not buying won't mean anything to them either because there are enough who will buy that they don't care about practical thinking folks.

Because if it's not running Apple's software, it's not a 1:1 copy. There's nothing particularly special about the iPhone's hardware - it's the OS -especially with the App Store about to be launched in a couple weeks.

The iPhone/iPod touch are going to be huge for Apple - much more important to them than the iPod ever was. This is the tablet Mac people have been asking for.

Let me get this straight.....

200$ = 8gb iPhone with 2 year contract
600$ = 8gb iPhone with no contract.

Is the early termination fee 175$? Why not get it with contract, cancel the next day, pay the ETF and basically get the same phone for 375$.

Yes/No?

Ya Just Can't Argue Against Gimmes

I also suspect that these things will probably sell very well. I have a number of friends with iPhones and not one of them bought one because they thought it was a superior piece of finely engineered communications technology (though I don't doubt there are folks out in the world who do). Each one bought one because it was pretty and the touch screen was "cool". With emotional positions like that, logic just don't stand a chance and they're very happy to pay through the nose for the ability to play with their new toy. There are many more folks out in the world like them.

Okay, that's their privilege. They feel it's money well spent and they have fun, so no harm no foul. I, however, will continue to use my much loved Nokia N95...

Re: Ya Just Can't Argue Against Gimmes

Yeah, except N95 is much more expensive ($749 for 8GB last time I checked) than what iPhone 3G 8GB costs without contract.

To be fair, N95 specs are better than iPhone 3G, so the price premium may be worth it to some. You pay for what you get, I suppose. I only hope that some U.S carrier will subsidize N95, just so we have an option to buy the phone at a lower price.

Re: Ya Just Can't Argue Against Gimmes

I picked up an unlocked standard N95 on Tiger Direct for $500 along with an 8 gig MicroSD card then popped my SIM chip in and have been using my AT&T account with Media Max with no issue. I didn't have to extend any contracts or pay any more money so it worked out well for me.

That's not to say that your observations on price of performance are inaccurate, only that there are some less expensive ways to get a performance boost.

Re: Ya Just Can't Argue Against Gimmes

Not exactly a fair comparison since I was referring to the one with 8GB built-in. Also, $500 is still not something I would pay without some serious thinking.

I wish the data plan was cheaper, but if you look at what other countries (Canada) are offering, AT&T isn't looking too bad.

This killed it for me.

I was looking forward to the 3G iphone but with the extra monthly cost involved I think I'll have to pass and stick with my current iphone. Besides, most places I go to have wireless access anyway so 3G wouldn't really be worth the extra 15 dollars a month to me. That will buy me an extra 3 gallons of gas here in CA. =D

Re: Since when

Kinda hard when its front page news...

It would not be soo bad if it was some great technological advances in cell phones, but for every trivial bit of news about this ONE STUPID PHONE gets annoying.

If they made a video cell phone, great, I want to hear about it, but pricing in another country? How is that news to me?

Objective

@rr.com

Interesting

You know what the funny thing is about all of this?

Even if the iPhone was free and the rate plans didn't change, people would still find something to complain about with all of this. If you want something to complain about look at what it would cost to have comparable service in Europe or Japan.

I myself have an iPhone and Blackberry Curve 8300. I have also had a Samsung Blackjack, a Treo 750, and an HTC Tilt. The iPhone and the Blackberry are the two best PDA's I have owned yet. I, personally, will be buying an iPhone 3G on launch day. I might even ditch my Curve with the new iPhone software supporting Push email and MobileMe.

If you want something that is going to work well then it is going to cost you. I worked for AT&T last year on the original iPhone launch day and I watched hundreds of people line up ready to shell out $600 for a slower iPhone. Regardless of what the Apple and AT&T haters have to say, I can only imagine how fast the new iPhones will sell out with a price tag of $199/$299.

Also, as far as a 2 year contract, I still do not understand what people have against it. Are you planning on taking it to an inferior U.S. GSM service like Tmobile? I mean, I guess some people do like paying every month for a service that doesn't work. Not me, I like my phone to be able to work in a greater coverage area across the States.

YouSure

@conversent.net

Re: Interesting

But apparently it's not truly $199/$299. According to this article, unless I'm reading it wrong, new AT&T customers will still be paying the old price of $399 and $499.

Objective

@rr.com

Re: Interesting

With upgrade eligibility or new activation the new iPhones are $199/$299 because they are subsidized by $200 with a new 2 year contract.

PriceGouge

@conversent.net

$600 or $700 without contract????

What a crock -- I just read an article that said it costs Apple about $170 to produce the 8 GB version and about $190 to produce the 16 GB version. I thought there were still laws on price gouging? I guess not considering what's happened with gasoline, food, and everything else in this country.

chevyrulz0991

@ssa.gov

Re: $600 or $700 without contract????

this is not price gouging.

Do you NEED an iphone? no.

Do you need gas, milk, etc... somewhat more of a yes.

this is simply to ELIMINATE THE ebay market for this phone.

chevyrulz0991

@ssa.gov

Re: $600 or $700 without contract????

i never recieved a subsidized phone to begin with, yet am not "upgrade" eligible because my contract was renewed in february08 for the 16gb iphone.

lame.

so i have to spend 499$ hu? ok, no sweat. Prices couldnt last long.

I just dont understand if i didnt get a free phone to start, why other people can be upgradeable and im not. sucky.

Will i pay it? yes, I want an iphone. I have a gophone now, if any one wants to deal with it, you can have it, its a piece of crap! (regular contract though)

Objective

@rr.com

Eligible

You should be eligible for a new iPhone 3G. All current AT&T customers who have an active line with an iPhone registered to it are supposed to be eligible for the iPhone 3G upgrade subsidy. You may want to talk to a sales rep at a local corporate store.

Re: Eligible

said by Objective :

You should be eligible for a new iPhone 3G. All current AT&T customers who have an active line with an iPhone registered to it are supposed to be eligible for the iPhone 3G upgrade subsidy. You may want to talk to a sales rep at a local corporate store.
But that is what is confusing me. I have a family plan with 1 Iphone and one Tilt. I want to get the 3G-IPhone to replace the Tilt, but that line is nor eligible for the upgrade but the Iphone line is. So could I get the Upgrade and apply it to my Tilt line instead of the Iphone line and get the subsidy price???

With T-mobile, you can get unlimited anytime minutes for $99/month

The at&t unlimited plan is $99.mo for regular phones. With the iPhone data plan, it is $129.99.

It's probably cheaper than it would be if it was a VZW exclusive, though America's Most Profitable Wireless Network and all that...

Interesting, today it was leaked that Verizon plans to put out a CDMA version of the HTC Touch Diamond- I wonder how much that will be.
