Aereo Announces Three New Launch Markets

Aereo has lined up three more market launches as the streaming OTA service expands its reach. According to an e-mail sent to our inbox, the company says they'll be launching Aereo in Miami on September 2, Houston on September 16, and Dallas on September 23. The three new launches should extend Aereo's reach to a combined 17.3 million new potential viewers.

As already announced, the company is slated to launch the service in Utah August 19 and in Chicago on September 13. These new markets come on the heels of launches in the New York City, Boston, and Atlanta metro markets.

For the moment Aereo's fortunes are looking up. Back in May, the company introduced its new service pricing, the company offering 20 hours of Aereo's cloud-based antenna/DVR technology for $8 a month, and 60 hours of DVR storage for $12 a month. They've also continued to have good luck on the legal front against broadcasters, who continue to try and have the service shut down over copyright infringement claims (claims Judges are disagreeing with).

The company is also receiving some added business this week as Time Warner Cable directs blocked CBS users to the Aereo service and its 30 day money back guarantee.

I wonder...

What's the holdup for Washington, DC? It was announced a long time ago, with Atlanta and Philadelphia.

Yeah I was just wondering that. Seems kind of a large market (9th largest in the US) to skip over.

Re: I wonder...

How about seattle tacoma while their at it.
10 or 12th biggest market most homes have broadband but due to hills, trees, etc and a long north south layout cable- dish or the big outdoor antenna is needed in many areas in close in for OTA.
this could be a big seller here.

I was wondering the same thing about Birmingham. The DMA here is very spread out, to the point that Tuscaloosa is out of range of most of the stations coming off Red Mountain unless you have an outdoor antenna.

Go, Aereo, Go!

Great to see this company is giving consumers options for OTA broadcast reception and cloud based DVR.

Certain Markets, Less Likelyhood of Lawsuits??

Do these smaller markets have local owned affiliates that are less likely to sue, than the bigger market stations that are network owned?

Maybe they are only launching markets where the US District courts are more friendly, and won't slap an injunction on them if pressed to do so....

Since the initial injunction the national channel asked for did not work, and CBS is not likely to prove their case of infringement, the local affiliates are stuck in the same position, where they cannot really do anything.

Aereo

Even better than Aereo is Filmon. For some unfathomable reason only lets you view a channel a half hour at a time, after a half hour you have to close and re-open the browser! Filmon does not have this restriction nor does it charge money. Free is much better than $8.00 a month.

Dallas

Finally Dallas is announced. I'm going to purchase one of these and test drive it for two months and if all goes well cancel my Fios TV package.

Re: Aereo

Why is filmon illegal? As far as I know they use antennas just like aereo.

Just how large is Aereo?

I'm kinda curious as to how many subscribers they have. I know they have a few legals battles to fight, but they've seem to have won the ones they have already fought.

Hopefully the Networks can't shut them down.

If anything, maybe Aereo could buy Hulu?

Aereo needs to have smart TV apps

Without smart TV apps, Aereo won't be coming to my home. I want to watch TV on my TV, not my PC, laptop, tablet or phone.

Re: Aereo needs to have smart TV apps

This is a good post. My TV has built in apps for a number of programs and every month or so LG seems to add a few more. I wonder what it would take to get Aereo to consider creating one.

If I ever go back to OTA

If I ever go back to OTA, I'll climb onto the roof and install a decent roof antenna and run RG6 to a ground block (bonded to the house electrical) and to a TiVo box with a lifetime subscription.

SolidSignal(dot)com has some pretty decent antennas at good prices.

And using an antenna does not consume bandwidth on your capped ISP plan.

I could probably get reception using an indoor antenna but it is kind of hit or miss around here and you have to adjust the antenna each time you change the channel. Been doing that until I adopted the cord in the year 2000.

Some places you just can't get reception, like my mother's cousin's apartment in Northampton (MA). When OTA went digital, she had to get cable because she lost reception. And my mother's cousin is on a fixed income.
