Aereo Launches in Baltimore December 16 Thursday Dec 05 2013 18:54 EDT Several pre-registered users have written in to tell us they've received early access invites for an Aereo launch in Baltimore. Now Aereo has officially announced that their live broadband TV service will arrive in Baltimore on December 16. As with other markets the launch will be broad -- technically covering 11 different Maryland counties. Aereo is currently available in NYC, Boston, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Miami, Dallas, Houston, Detroit, and Denver. As noted yesterday, it's unlikely they're going to meet their end of 2013 20 market launch goal, with most of their "coming soon" markets likely looking at an early 2014 launch. |

SubscribersAt this rate they are never going to make their extremely optimistic subscriber predictions consisting of 1/4 the US population.

Re: SubscribersTo achieve such numbers will be nearly impossible to begin with. Nothing less than perfect execution will get them anywhere close to that and so far things have not been going perfect. Their attitude reminds me of Spotify. Spotify had wild ideas about subscriber numbers too and so far they have been completely wrong.

Because people get OTA for free so there is little demand for leasing an antenna from them to get OTA. Why pay to lease an antenna when you can just buy your own antenna???
| | | | |
Re: SubscribersWell, people who watch only OTA TV tend to be more price-sensitive than their neighbors who subscribe to cable/satellite. So this is a tough market to crack.

Incomplete Assortment of StationsNote that they have no FOX, as Sinclair-owned WBFF is not included in the listings.
Neither are channels outside the DMA frequently included on Baltimore area cable systems such as WPXW (ION), WETA (PBS), WHUT (PBS), WFDC (Univision), WZDC (Telemundo), WMDO (UniMas), and WQAW (Azteca America).

Re: Incomplete Assortment of StationsA cable station has no problem, because they get the feed directly, and they pay for retransmission. Aereo can't do this, because their whole model relies on a legal loophole.
Aereo has to use mini-antennas, because they have to rent you a dedicated physical antenna. Because the antennas are so small, they have a hard time picking up any signal that is not being broadcast from Baltimore.
For example, WETA broadcasts from Chevy Chase. WHUT broadcasts from Washington. WPXW broadcasts from suburban Virginia. I can't figure out WBFF, though.

Re: Incomplete Assortment of StationsI do not see a listing of channels in the story but WBFF broadcasts out of Baltimore, the Antenna is right next to other stations that they are advertising.
