After Iraqi Uprising, Carriers Rename 'Isis'
by Karl Bode 04:41PM Monday Jul 07 2014
AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile's Isis NFC-based mobile payment service was already struggling, with many users either simply not interested in the idea of using their smartphone as a debit card, already using other services, or simply never having heard of it. Now things are more complicated, with the service suddenly sharing its name with a violent iraqi uprising dominating the newswires (the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIS).

Since the brand hadn't been resonating anyway, the company stated in a blog post it will soon be changing:
quote:
However coincidental, we have no interest in sharing a name with a group whose name has become synonymous with violence and our hearts go out to those who are suffering. As a company, we have made the decision to rebrand. Changing a brand is never easy, but we know this is the right decision – for our company, our partners and our customers. We are actively working on a new brand, and I’ll share more with you as our journey progresses in the coming months.
Have any thoughts on a new brand name?

I wondered how they would deal with that...

....In other news a jihadist group calling it's self APPLE seems to have quite a few recruits praying at the glass mosque in Cupertino

Re: I wondered how they would deal with that...

AT&T, Verizon, & T-mobile are missing a big opportunity - keep ISIS as the name of the payment system, and they can market themselves as the official payment system for the coming worldwide Caliphate. An opportunity to market to 1.6 billion muslims, and be bigger than VISA.

really?

"become synonymous with violence "

I've always thought ATT, Verizon, and T-Mo were synonymous with (financial) violence. No need to change the name.

Re: really?

Same here. Now if only Archer and his crew could take on the leader of the real-life ISIS. That would be fun to watch.

They aren't bad enough. You'd need to be Enron level to call yourself ISIS.

They are at the most 'Black Panthers' financial violence level.

Built into the OS

Why don't they just let me use the wallet built into my phones OS?

Re: Built into the OS

They do. It works perfectly fine (at least on my VZW S3). Have to go and install the app for it.

Re: Built into the OS

Verizon crippled the NFC wallet application in Windows Phones. The app doesn't need to be installed, it's part of the OS as provided by Microsoft.

Not sure why everyone says ISIS stinks...

Their promotion of AmEx Serve + ISIS gave me $40 free plus $50 free every month, until 12/31/2014. $450 for nothing...why exactly does this suck again?

What about that more places take Google wallet then ISIS, and I can't use it, as I don't have a amex or Chase sapphire credit card.

How does "the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant"..

turn into ISIS? Wouldn't it be ISIL? They call it ISIL on some of the news programs I've watched.

Not interested.

Because carrying a CC is so mainstream? Cash is so last year?

Oh right, because carrying a cc AND a phone is very hard.

Because people don't need to carry ID anymore.
And we don't have pockets, or wallets, or purses.
And we don't carry keys.

Fuck it, just put a chip in my hand and a cell phone in my brain.

Enough with the damn political correctness.

Now that ISIS the terrorist group is changing their name, will ISIS the payment service keep theirs?

Trademarks

Those guys in Iraq should have done a trademark search first. Apparently, they never heard of the phone companies' Isis. Neither have I.
