ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The last frontier just may become the first state in the nation to legalize marijuana (search) completely.

Backers of a controversial ballot initiative want pot to be treated just like alcohol. If voters pass the measure, it would be legal to grow, smoke and sell any amount of marijuana so long as one is 21 years of age. The state would regulate the cannabis industry just like it licenses booze and cigarettes.

Hopefully..

When I lived up there this was on the ballot every year. And everyone voted to legalize it, but it was never legalized. When I first moved up there it was legal to smoke, legal to possess, but illegal to transport. (I'm not sure if it was legal to sell or not.) Hopefully this will go through, and work out. Then maybe a few other states will notice the drop in drug related crime in Alaska because people arent mugging and killing eachother for weed.

EDIT*

I just read the article and saw this:
quote:
State Attorney General Gregg Renkes (search) opposes the initiative. He says liberalizing the drug laws will "lead to a higher rate of addiction for marijuana and other drugs.

"It will increase the burden on the state, and I think it's really a disservice to our young people."
Marijuana addiction? Please. What sort of propaganda is that guy reading. What burden on the state? You mean in massive influx of tax dollars it will recieve? When I lived up there, it was easier to get weed than to get alcohol, if its legalized, it will probably make it harder for young people to get it.
