As CEO says company tried to buy Sprint three times....
(old news - 06:29PM Monday Jun 23 2008)
tags: wireless · bandwidth · networking · Alltel Axess
Alltel today announced that the company has finally got around to seriously upgrading their 3G wireless broadband network with EVDO Revision A technology. The upgrades will increase average downstream speeds from 400-700kbps to between 600kbps and 1.4Mbps. Upstream speeds will jump from an average of 50-70kbps to 500-800kbps. Alltel CEO Scott Ford has also this week been discussing the acquisition by Verizon Wireless in more detail, saying that Alltel tried to buy several companies, including Sprint (three times).

Awesome!

Alltel provides the EVDO on the native Sprint Network here in my area so RevA will be greatly appreciated on the Mogul.

Hurray

Finally Rev A has arrived. I'm also using sprint EVDO service here in the Bay Area...speeds are okay between 400-700kbps which is better than dial up when on the road.

Now my questions is ...Will we see a PRL update from the 40036 to a new one and doesnt anybody know if Black berry support Rev A EVDO speeds.

Alltel has been pretty good company so far...a bit pricey on some plans but coverage is as good as Verizon here in the Bay Area.

Alltel is now VZW?

I completely missed the sale. Apparently it took place back in 6/5, and is expected to close late this year.

Guess that means the future holds nothing but crippled phones (VZ) crappy handsets (Sprint) and dropped calls (TMo/ATT). So much for the revolution.

Alltel, can you hear me now? You better, cause we own yo ass...

Re: Alltel is now VZW?

No MyCircle and no U Prepaid (which is much better than Verizon Prepaid). And question is what will happen to the roamer only GSM system Alltel operates. When Alltel and Verizon, or Alltel and US Cellular are the 800s, your better hope one of them (Alltel) has GSM service if you have a GSM phone.

Re: Alltel is now VZW?

Just speculating but it seems like all of the carriers except for sprint are going with LTE -- I imagine they will just have one uniform network at that point where others can roam if roaming agreements are in place.

Re: Alltel is now VZW?

This has been mentioned in all the other LTE vs WiMAX discussions. LTE is going to be used for data-only. While it could lead to a GSM upgrade later on, voice will remain on the respective CDMA and GSM networks and only data will be on LTE.

Re: Alltel is now VZW?

There'd be no reason to convert from CDMA to GSM- it'd be a downgrade in voice quality anyway. LTE is supposed to have voice over VoIP-based systems, which are much cheaper than current cellular voice technologies.

Its not like that LTE is the family of GSM. Called 3gpp. »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3gpp
Plus both cdma and GSM are old school. What has to happen is Alltel moved to a GSM core first then to LTE.

MyCircle will still be around for those customers that have it now and as long as they don't renew their contract after the merger. After that they won't have it of course. uPrepaid will go away almost after everyone in DC signs off on the deal.

Do you know how they will handle grandfathered U Prepaid accounts? I have the old grandfathered plan where you only have to make a call every 30 days with no minimum top-up amounts. Would hate to see that go away, but there's always PagePlus if it does, I guess...

Re: Alltel is now VZW?

The only thing VZW is required by law to keep is anything where their is a contract in place. Since UPrePaid is a prepaid service and has no actual contract VZW can and most likely get rid of the service.

As far as postpaid customers of Alltel their service will go unchanged until they either renew their contract with VZW under a "new plan" or change providers.

Re: Alltel is now VZW?

Yep, that is why I am concerned about the future of U Prepaid.

VZW will be happy to see me go too. This line has been used as a backup to my Sprint line, and of the initial $20 refill back in mid-2006 there is still about $4 left.

I'm also ~50 miles away from the closest Alltel area and have been pretty much perma-roaming on Sprint or VZW. I'm sure in the end they've lost money on me.

Old News

Rev.A has been active for quite a while now. I've been using it at least 3 months now on my HTC 6800. Maybe they are just now getting around to announcing it.

How to tell if Rev A?

How can I tell on my Samsung Hue if I am rev A?
I tether using my laptop now and get 400-600 kbps down in the Cleveland Market, but have gotten speeds up to 1 mbps down in the Youngstown market nearby. Both on Alltel A band 850 mhz here.

"that would really hurt" I am not sure that describes it well enough. It would be supreme ass rapeage. How they were able to convince the FCC and the federal government that charging Americans a small house payment ($500) for every gig, over the 5 GB limit, is beyond me. I hope the cap is either removed or raised to a fair cap if Verizon is allowed to buy Alltel. I think forcing them to remove the cap would be best, because it would encourage them to deploy the 700 MHz spectrum to, rural and have not internet users, sooner. Other wise they will come up with some new "Milk the costumer" plan. I also think the FCC should force the phone companies to provide free T-1'S to cell towers that provide data to a community where they do not offer at least DSL to there costumers. I think we would all be surprised how fast rural and have not communities can be built out.

@cableone.net

You guys obviously know zero about Verizon. The best carrier in the US and most coverage, yeah phones are partly crippled but not much you guys just don't know. BTW Verizon is going to open source software, which means we can put anything on the phones we want.

Get facts before you guys bust a company that is #1 in all ratings too. Sorry you can't afford them..
