Amazon Launches Cloud Drive
5GB Free, Options Up To 1000GB for $1,000
by Karl Bode Wednesday 30-Mar-2011 tags: business · bandwidth · content · consumers
Tipped by darcilicious See Profile
Amazon yesterday launched their new Cloud Drive service, which provides all users with 5GB of free remote storage for music, video, photos and documents. According to Amazon, users who purchase something (however cheap) from the company's digital music store will get an additional 20 GB of storage free of charge for one year from the date of your purchase. The company of course is also providing users with paid storage options, ranging from $20 a year for 20GB, to $1,000 a year for 1,000 GB. The company also unveiled a Cloud player, allowing users to stream music from their storage locker to either a remote PC or an Android device. As you might expect, the record labels are already complaining that Amazon didn't secure additional streaming licenses before launching the service.

20 gigs

Actually they move you up to the 20 gig storage plan for "free" for a full year. After the year is done if you want to renew you have to pay the 20$ for another year or not be able to add new stuff to your drive until you trim out content lowering you to under 5 gigs.

The cheapest it can be had is 69 cents: »www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004SK···sr=1-204

69 cents for 20 gigs of backup storage works for me which is what I did.

Re: 20 gigs

They have a long long way to go to catchup to Dropbox. Amazon isn't even close.

Dropbox...
- clients for on most every major smartphone/tablet (BB/iPhone/Android) and OS (Windows/Mac/Linux)
- works via web for other that don't have clients
- can mix/match sharing between all platforms
- can restore previous versions of files or accidentally deleted files
- can publicly or privately share files
- supports truecrypt (open source encryption) since it does block level syncing
- Only 2GB free to start with but you get free 250MB extra for every referral

Unlike Amazon, you can also signup anonymously...

No mention of the 20Gb upgrade (whatever you wanna call it) on the front page....Think I am gonna check this out.

Anyone know what the interface is like...if its all just through the web (point and click) it'll be kinda crappy to manipulate a lot of files.

I'd also be curious if there is any compression going on with video or pictures.

I bought the song, but down in the bottom left it still shows I'm using X of 5GB....was I supposed to do something else to get to the 20GB limit?

:EDIT: So the promo...could take a bit for it to reflect.

There's actually a ton of albums for 69 cents.

There's also free albums, but I don't know if those count.

If the free albums do work that means I wasted 69 cents, oh well :P

The reason I picked that song as it was the first cheapest song I clicked on. I have no interest in Glee nor have I have heard the song and still have not even though I bought it lol.

Just so everyone is aware...despite the age of this post, thought I would let ppl know, that in order to qualify for the 20GB space, you have to buy an ALBUM...not just 1 mp3. You also have to buy it as an album, and not seperate tracks. Just an FYI...

Now I'm off to listen to my sweet Glee mp3...

Additional streaming licenses?

Why would they need additional streaming licenses? Its not like they're operating an internet radio station. Its just playing your already paid for music.

Streaming licenses? Bah

It's difficult to believe that record labels can argue that companies like Amazon have to secure a different type of license for media that users purchase. The model that users must pay for every digital version (on each device) is and has always been ridiculous. I hope this drive moves us toward a realistic digital media model, not one driven only by record company greed.

Re: Streaming licenses? Bah

This situation and argument are akin to the remote DVR that cable companies are fighting over. Recorded/Purchased content is stored remotely and available to the licensee (assuming content legitimately obtained) for use as normal. I don't see this being much of an issue since "cloud" storage available to only me is no different than the external hard drive sitting next to my computer available only to me.

Also, other than mac's and pc's, to play back the stored music, other mobile devices must support flash player. So all the iPhone & iPad users are out of luck, for now anyway.

p.s.>> the uploading pgm provided by Amazon did however handle iTunes stored music in the MP4 format and I believe converted them to mp3 while uploading. So I was able to easily upload all my iTunes music library to Amazon. It was however very slow doing the conversion & upload.

When I first used their service some time mid day yesterday it was fairly fast uploading and such, it got much slower by night fall.

Went from ~ 30 minutes or less for the set of files i had to about 3 hours + for the same size of selected files and 1 failed but I think my modem was reseting at the time.

@tmodns.net
It's not likely that Apple will ever let amazon release the app for idevices and probably would have liked to block them from releasing it for mac computers. Amazons mp3 store is the largest and most direct competitor to their itunes ecosystem. i-device users if they had the amazon cloud stream feature would no longer need to use the worst part of the i-device ecosystem and that's the forced tie in with apples music player. All their songs would be lifted out of itunes and listenable on any device they buy (android etc..) and it would become more convenient to buy from amazon's mp3 store at that point. Strangely enough I wouldn't be surprised if amazon releases something via cydia since we know they were willing to push out the amazon appstore through android side-load.

Make no mistake this shot, while crossing googles bow, is poised to do much more damage to apple.

Not necessarily. My Android phone uses an ARMv6, so it doesn't have a copy of Flash made for it (yet). However, I'm able to install & run the Amazon MP3 app just fine from the Marketplace.

Flash is only a prerequisite for the mobile web streaming player.

Yet that is not the question he is asking

If someone uses drugs in their home and the cops illegally raid it, you would say "Well, don't use drugs and you are golden". Yet, the case would get thrown out b/c the ACTUAL issue is whether the cops had a RIGHT to go in to start with (which in this situation is no)

Amazon being given the right to comb through my files freely has little to no interest for me and I d/l stuff legally. Yet, I am still offended by it. I don't trust any major company with all of my files just yet. No reason has been given to do so.

Re: who's paying for it?

Okay I must say this is a bit silly, amazon had a net income last year of over a billion dollars. Amazon makes money on its other cloud service. Amazon makes money for the worlds best selling ereader, amazon makes money for every sale, amazon makes money for most prime accounts, everytime someone wishes to put their ebook on amazon they are charged a fee for doing so. Every time someone buys a book amazon is making a bit of money.

Hard drive space is fairly cheap. 2TB hard drives can be had for about 100$.

So lets say they designate ~ 2 of these drives one for use and one for backup. That means for 200$ amazon can host 46 people.

People will be paying for this service, for everyone on a 2TB drive that is $920 to be had, 920/200, so with every 46 people they can now get the hard drive space to host 4 and a half more people.

A lot of people will be fine with the 5 gigs which as long as some people use their service they will end up coming ahead.

Of course this does not include the piece of servers and such but in the end people will use their service and either way they come out ahead. The hardware being used can always be designated elsewhere if the service flops which I doubt as people now have an easy way to listen to their music and likely even read their ebooks on future ereaders with out filling up their space.

So even if it does flop I am sure they have use for the servers so they are not out of money to begin with.

And they're probably getting their drive space even cheaper than that anyway. I think that Cloud Drive is probably sharing space with S3. They probably saw they had unsold S3 capacity and decided to portion it off and market it as a different product to a different demographic, to gain new customers that might have never purchased S3.

Re: who's paying for it?

Very likely they are getting them at cost as they do sell hard drives to begin with. I decided not to include that price as I do not know it.

And it is very likely that it is all hosted, shared in the same amazon data center. If they need more space they just get more server racks and bigger hard drives when they are needed.

Even if the service fails they will still be in the green with the success of everything else they offer including the continued success of the kindle.

Hmmm...

How is this different from a seedbox? For $35 a month, www.seedunlimited.com gives me 750 gigs encrypted storage space with a 100 mbs connection (on their end) and I can stream content on any computer via their interface. What's different between this and Amazon's service (which seems a lot more expensive).

You can upload multiple files by shift-clicking.

You can mass-upload music (and only music) more easily with their Adobe AIR-powered upload tool. Just point it at the folder where you keep your mp3s.

However...

Music uploaded to CloudDrive gets automatically sorted into new folders based on ID3 tags. I find this extremely annoying as I don't sort my music that way and much of my collection has been stripped of tags anyway. CloudPlayer also organizes things this way with no regard for what folder they may be in on CloudDrive. Totally, utterly braindead IMO.
