Amazon Set Top Box Looks to Be Delayed
by Karl Bode 08:43AM Friday Nov 01 2013 Tipped by telcodad See Profile
Leaks from April and earlier this month suggested that Amazon was very keen on launching an Android-powered set top box under the Kindle brand, sometime before the busy holiday sales season. But now anonymous sources tell The Verge that the box has been delayed, and "possibly" won't make that holiday deadline. The device, which is being aimed directly at the Roku and Apple TV, should make its debut sometime in 2014. Amazon's keen to have a hardware product that helps further advertise the company's streaming video library, and by proxy the Amazon Prime subscription service.

Who cares

Do we really need *another* little plastic gizmo of this sort?? Roku, Apple TV, and now Chromecast are all perfectly adept at what they do... what more is Amazon going to bring when it comes to such a thing? Seems like a waste of plastic (oil) and rare earth materials.

Re: Who cares

They're going to bring you endless sales pitches for an Amazon Prime membership using said piece of plastic, that's what!

They all lack the same thing. No local content playback. A nice box that does premium online services and also offering local content playback would be nice.

Re: Who cares

The higher end Rokus has a USB port to play local content from flash drive. Also it has plex channel that you can easily setup to play anything from your home network.

Wireless keyboard/trackpad support with a better UI for Amazon Instant Video & My Watchlist would be worth it (at the right price, of course). Or maybe throw in a free Kindle with a remote control app?
