WorldMax offers 1Mbps for $31 a month....

Europe's first mobile WiMax network went live for demonstration purposes this week in Amsterdam, courtesy of a company by the name of WorldMax. Once the network goes completely live later this summer, Amsterdam residents will get 1Mbps/128kbps unlimited service for about 20 Euro ($31) a month. The company plans to expand coverage to the entire Netherlands in time, a task that will require some 3,000 tower sites, and will cost "hundreds of millions" of dollars, according to Reuters. The network was built by Alcatel-Lucent and partially financed by Intel.

Speeds not impressive - 3G cell service will crush Wimax

If these speeds are the best that mobile Wimax can do, then the 3G and later 4G speeds being rolled out by the cell phone services will crush Wimax before it catches on. Wimax had a window of opportunity - last year. Soon that window will be closed.

Sounds like the low-end, low price point option. Or, they may be having the same backhaul issues that Sprint is having in the US.

Re: Speeds not impressive - 3G cell service will crush Wimax

It's about backhaul. WiMAX can do 3-6Mbps in real world if there's enough backhaul. Technically, the devices can do 15Mbps in labs.

They are probably limiting to 1Mbps to manage the backhaul.

@ TK-
ehhh...no. LTE tested in a 'lab environment' has achieved 100 Mbit speeds. HOWEVER, the 802.11n spec of WiMax can EASILY offer speeds of 1 Gbps, provided that the carrier has approx. 100 Mhz. of bandwidth. Which Sprint just HAPPENS to have. Also, just because the last mile can offer 100 Mbit pipes doesn't mean it WILL be offered. Unless you expect AT&T to snap their fingers and upgrade their backhaul overnight out of the pure goodness of their hearts, rest assured, 100/50 Mbit internet on LTE is still a pipe dream. BTW, I'm not particularly interested in a 100/50 connection that includes a 5 GB/month cap, no thanks.
BTW, how many LTE deployments have we actually seen in the US again...?

Confused

I stopped reading at "HOWEVER, the 802.11n spec of WiMax can EASILY offer speeds of 1 Gbps"

Explain?

no steam

And no caps on this plan. See that WiMAX has no steam to deliver wireline service. These speeds are the same as EVDO. Muni wifi would be faster for christ's sake. This network is dead at the starting line.

Re: no steam

Care to post some tech specs of WiMax to back up that bold statement?
BTW, here are some actual facts, for a refreshing change:
"802.16m — Advanced Air Interface. Data rates of 100 Mbit/s for mobile applications and 1 Gbit/s for fixed applications, cellular, macro and micro cell coverage, with currently no restrictions on the RF bandwidth (which is expected to be 20 MHz or higher).[1] The proposed work plan would allow completion of the standard by December 2009 for approval by March 2010."
-Courtesy of Wikipedia...

Maybe not in deployment YET, but sure as hell shows that some people around here need to do their homework before posting...
Also, try using Muni-WiFi on a car moving at 60 mph and come back and post your experience...

Re: no steam

Care to start making excuses for WorldMax's slow speeds?

Sure WiMax can do upto 7893276328974 petabits per second. Will anyone install it in that configuration? No. Therefore its a lie.

Re: no steam

Say that to LTE.....
especially in the US...
And cite the 'slow speeds' you speak of. (other than the case mentioned here...)

Mention a sold to consumers currently running mobile WiMAX network in the USA.

Re: no steam

Ummm, shall I mention Clearwire? Maybe not mobile WiMax, but at least it shows that WiMax in the US isn't vaporware...
LTE? Let me ask, exactly how much of AT&T's network is even 1st-gen 3G, let alone LTE? AT&T users are barely starting to whoop about HSDPA. LTE? *shakes head* Still on the drawing board...
And your amazing grammar usage implies you have been using Microsoft's spelling and grammar tool.
