Analyst: Cell Carrier 'Laziness' Aided NSA Spying
Karsten Nohl, chief scientist with Berlin's Security Research Labs, tells Reuters that cell carriers worldwide aided the NSA's data collection capabilities by failing to implement relatively basic and long-available security updates, SIM and encryption improvements, and hardware and software patches. "I couldn't imagine it is complicity. I think it is negligence," he said. "I don't want to believe in a worldwide conspiracy across all worldwide network operators. I think it is individual laziness and priority on network speed and network coverage and not security." Nohl helps maintain GSMMap.org, which evaluates the security of mobile operators around the globe.

I'll believe it.

The NSA doesn't strike me as an organization that would seek out cooperation if it could simply take what it wanted through subterfuge instead. And we all know that too many companies involved with technology these days have a "security last, if at all" mindset.

Re: I'll believe it.

You say that most people neglect and cause problems because of laziness. You get the "HOW DARE YOU!" responses.
Tell the to the government and its people goes "HOW DARE YOU!"...

When will people stop being offended for a detail that may or may not even be true? Why do corporations clench so tightly the power to accuse the accuser, and make money out of it!
Why do others never applying logic or philosophy into what other people say?

Its simple... We're lazy.

Of course

It's no doubt laziness, because until now they felt no need to implement better security as they assumed anyone trying to break it was slim to none, or assumed those who could were governments who wouldn't.

It's not an issue they have ever really had to worry about so keeping things to the bare minimum while focusing on "customer seen" improvements would make sense...not good sense, but sense.

Re: Of course

Everyone's fault, but not the unaware's fault.
If you read a news about an issue then move on, thats laziness.
You know about something bad, but not do anything. Laziness.

Not Laziness...budget!

Most BIG companies don't look at the compliance when it cost the bottom line. They will exert more effort and expense avoiding "compliance" as the fine is cheaper than the solution.

So these cell carriers are not lazy, they are saving money, as stupidly as possible.

(E.g. where I worked, many middle managers complained to IT that it was "difficult" for their users daily to have a password to login. DIFFICULT! We were then instructed to remove passwords to certain staff on their workstations... Till blue in the face we warned of cost of data loss, breaches, access, insecurity... but they demanded this or else. ... one day later, some "employee" infected a $1.3Million HP Digital press... he was surfing net on it!)

How else was he supposed to print a hardcopy of his favorite porn actress in action?

Good day sir!

Frankly... I don't give a damn my dear!

I am more concerned at coverage and speed at this point.. I have a VPN on my phone when I feel the need to use it for web use. If they want to listen in on me.. Then so be it at this point. After coverage issues and speed become better. Then I shall worry about NSA spying on my cell. If I ever felt the need of concern. I will simply go and buy a quick prepay disposable phone..

Until then.. carry on good man, with network expansion! Not mind any of this silly jingo jango!
