Anchorage, Alaska Gets Gigabit Speeds Before Los Angeles Tuesday Dec 15 2015 07:40 EDT Alaska's GCI (see our user reviews) says the ISP has completed deployment of its ultra-fast "Red" gigabit broadband service to Anchorage. The company started its deployment of gigabit services in September and completed it at the end of November. The 1 Gbps downstream, 50 Mbps upstream service costs $175 a month, but according to the company's FAQ, GCI's Red gigabit service comes with a 750 GB usage cap. Unlike many gigabit deployments (that target housing developments) GCI's offering these speeds to their entire Anchorage customer base. That's because they're using DOCSIS 3.0 and a Hitron-made modem that’s capable of bonding 32 downstream channels. Still, the company crows that the Anchorage 1 GIG red project covers a 1.2 million-acre area, nearly twice the size of Rhode Island, and is believed to be the largest 1-gigiabit-service area in the United States. That claim to fame won't last long as many cable operators are expected to deploy gigabit speeds over cable via DOCSIS 3.1 throughout 2016. With the January launch of the service in areas such as Wasilla and Palmer, and the upcoming launches in Juneau and Fairbanks, more than 50 percent of Alaska’s population will have access to speeds up to 1 gigabit before end of summer 2016, claims the company. |
