Android 80% Of Verizon Smartphone Sales
Verizon's smartphone data sales somehow leaked...
Leaked Verizon data obtained from analysts and posted in the Wall Street Journal indicates that 80% of Verizon smartphone sales in November were Android devices. That's not great news for Blackberry, who despite still being profitable has seen a borderline ridiculous decline in the last few years. While the numbers show what can only be interpreted as success for Android, further analysis of the numbers highlight just how much the iPhone dominates the market. "iPhone alone is nearly twice the volume of all of Verizon’s smartphone activations.," notes asymco analyst Horace Dediu. According to Dediu, the numbers show Android's influence was "barely enough to keep the battle with AT&T from being a rout."

Re: The winner in this is..

iOS is not beating Android in the smart phone market. The iPhone is outselling Verizon's smart phones by a considerable margin, but iOS has been surpassed by Android as a platform. The Android software is kicking butt and bringing along many developers. It's beginning to look a bit like PC vs Mac, but hopefully Apple has a big enough lead where the users will still be able to find apps for their devices as the market share for iOS devices becomes less dominant.

Bad analyst's dont change reality. Just a week or so ago 3rd quarter smart phone market share figures came out and both Apple and Rim lost marketshare to Android. Technically Apple less so and it put them just slightly ahead of Rim, but it's all just for fun as it was expected that Android will pass both of them by next quarter's results. This is mature marketshare by the way, not sales volume in a given quarter which Android has had the lead on for several quarters now.

Here's what the analysts continue to miss:
The iPhone is a nice phone, but it only comes, in one size, from one manufacturer, with one color, 3.5 inch only, no keyboard option, limited capacity option, one carrier, sim locked (expensive international roaming), no wifi/uma calling, no ruggedized version. And all that is OK, except that what it really means is that the iphone cannot be everything to everyone. It can only be everything to some. Android offers devices that fits and fills EVERY market niche. 4.3 inch screen? yep. 2.8 inch small phone? yep. Keyboards? yep bbery style and slide/flip style. Carriers? Every single one (even the smaller ones like metro/cricket. Cheap? android phones can be had from free on contract (100 off contract) to 200 on contract (550 off contract). In essence Android has likely a phone that fits what nearly all the market may want. Everyone who ever thinks "man i wish my iphone could ...." it probably already exists with android. Like face time over 3G, customized screens, load any app from any source (minus At&t's gimp),not have to use itunes (seriously glaring limitation), customize relentless crappy alert system, view flash content, not drop calls, and on and on.

In the current phone market there is very little reason for one to buy an iphone unless they are apple fans or clueless consumers.

Oh and as a disclaimer, I own neither phone so I am impartial. I have been lucky however to be in a position to use and test most of the phones that come through the major carriers so I am quite familiar with all of them (both phones and carriers).

I think more the thrust of the news item was more iOS penetration.

Then again, Android is embryotic compared to iOS, given Apple's lead in the smart phone .

But don't trust me, ask Duffman. He'll tell you. He knows all about thrusting!

That was only comparing Verizon Android sales to the iPhone sales. With android phones, Verizon is not the only seller.

Total android sales from all carriers are higher than iPhone sales.

Actually, apple iPhone uses ios 4
»www.apple.com/iphone/ios ··· m&sr=sem

With its easy-to-use interface, amazing features, and rock-solid stability, iOS Apples mobile operating system is the foundation of iPhone. And even as other phones try to catch up, the technologies and features built into iOS 4 keep it years ahead of the competition.

There are tons more android devices out there than ios4 devices. Android is becoming a bigger player every day.

they ONLY talk about verizon. Android is on att, tmobile, verizon and sprint pcs. So if you add all of the droid users on all networks up i'm sure it's probably alot closer.

I know John Q, and my point was admittedly not well explained.

I ask the question, what percentage of users would have purchased an iPhone instead of an Android device if they had a choice on Verizon? I think if that was the case it would be 80% (or more?) iPhones

For AT&T, what percentage of their phone sales does the iPhone make up? is that data available? that would give a good idea of the market the iPhone has, becuase all of those people "suffer" through AT&Ts network and still buy the phone

I agree. And I am one of those (on the fence) to wait till January (February is critical month for me) to see if the "rumors" of an iPhone on VZW will come to fruition.
Would Verizon allow the iPhone to come aboard, you bet.
Would Verizon shoot Droid phones (Motorola, HTC, Samsung...) in the foot to get marketshare from ATT being an iPhone carrier? YOU Bet!
Would Verizon effup the iOS for their own app store? Ofcourse.

But will Apple allow VZW the iPhone? That we shall see.

Otherwise, I see a Samsung Galaxy (whatever) in my future.

May the best smartphone work!

Re: The winner in this is..

And Android is outselling iPhone overall in US and globally. Globally, the gap between Symbian and Android will shrink next year and Android should top them in another 2-3 years.

»www.cioinsight.com/c/a/L ··· -692598/

Need to factor that most people on Android are new to it, so most Android sales is actual growth of the platform. Most of the iPhone sales last quarter were upgrades from existing iPhone users, so less growth of the platform. iPad may have grown the platform but if most iPad owners are already iPhone users, the platform growth isn't quite the same as getting someone completely new to it.

Captain Obvious here but Android is likely to have true platform growth in foreseeable future. The other platforms will be mostly sustaining existing users or will simply shrink. RIM an Symbian slowly but surely will shrink but likely will have a base to sustain itself for a decade or more. Apple will continue to grow the base somewhat but not to the degree of Android. Most who really want an iPhone probably already have one, but for now a closed system might be the better choice for consumers who want a shepherd to take care of them and tell them what they want.

Android outsold iOS last couple quarters and is now just about to take over in market share as well in the US. By next quarter, Android should have market lead over iOS. Will likely take over RIM in another year or so.

Actually, you can't infer that iPhone is beating Android, by the statement. The statement only says that iPhone is beating all of Verizon's smartphone sales. However, there are other carrier besides Verizon, including AT&T, that carry phones that use the android system.

I'd bet that most of the VZW Droid sales last Q were mostly new to Android and that most of the iPhone sales last Q were upgrades of existing users - not all but well more than half. Is clear in Gartner reports above post that Android platform as a whole is outgrowing iOS and should pass iOS up next year. But iPhone sales will always be high each quarter due to upgrades from existing iPhone users.

Verizon NEEDS the iPhone to stay ahead of AT&T

»www.asymco.com/2010/12/1 ··· kes-out/

The whole thrust of the article is that Verizon is now desperate to get the iPhone and a deal with Apple is a sure thing. And that Verizon trusts Google even less than they do Apple. Apple is a known devil and Google is an unpredictable devil.

The Iphone's time to shine could be over if Apple continues to stick to just one model type. There will be the inevitable huge jump in sales onces it gets on a useable network, but Android has the market covered when it comes to choices of handsets. You can't get a physical keyboard with Apple, a smaller or larger screen, or anything different. The one size fits all approach was great three years ago. But I think its time they actually innovate something, instead of changing the case design and calling it revolutionary.

This I agree with. Apple brought smartphones to the average consumer, now it needs to take the next step. Capability-wise, Android is leaps and bounds ahead of iPhone.

Comparing personal electronic devices for non-techie consumers and automobiles isn't a valid comparison. Most people are comfortable driving a car but might not be so with a smartphone. How many people are still challenged with a standard desktop computer?

I was referring simply to the pool of consumers who know how to use a phone, but like different things. You may want a subcompact hatchback. Mini and Toyota can provide those.
You want a midsize sedan... only one can.
Mini lost a sale to a competitor because they were only focused on their niche.
I understand this is quite an oversimplified example, but I think it can be a valid point. If apple does to the Iphone what Motorola has done to their droid lineup then I think they might be able to capture more market share instantly. Just a hunch of mine.
I know that many people would only buy a blackberry because of its keyboard. I also know a couple people that have ditched their blackberry for a droid pro... because of the keyboard. They never liked the software, so when an android phone with the right form factor came out, they won out customers.

Verizon took tax payer money.

At the very least they should repay the tax payers with a free phone and a years worth of calls.

I was unaware of verizon needing governtment welfare, unlike GM, and Chrysler.

AT&T should be worried

That over the next couple of years when their take rates and user rates will slowly decline. Once Verizon gets the Iphone (which will happen next quarter... its a lock) then what will AT&T offer to the consumer that Verizon doesn't do any better.
Android will have to step it up. I'm a self confessed Android fan and love my Droid X. But its clear that most people out there eat up Apple's marketing and take the device as the best thing since the invention of the internet.
Android can compete if more and more lower priced handsets are put out. The current lower end devices that Verizon has, like the Motorola Citrus and the LG Vortex aren't that good at all. Bring up the competency of low end devices and maybe things could get interesting.

Just got my Droid HTC Incredible

With Android / Verizon - there are more choices to choose from for smartphones. Best Buy currently offering the HTC Incredible for FREE which instantly changed my mind which smartphone to get.

Verizon cell service out performs AT&T any day. Consumer Reports just listed AT&T as worst carrier.

Re: Just got my Droid HTC Incredible

I've used two different networks with prepaid phones - VZW and Sprint (Virgin Mobile USA uses Sprint's network). Given my experiences with both, VZW wins, and in a rout. (I've also used/seen in operation *contract phones*, but not the iPhone, from both carriers, and AT&T Mobility (based on performance, I call them AT&T Immobility) - seriously, I'd go to AT&T Mobility, or Sprint, why? Currently, the only advantage AT&T Mobility has right now is exclusivity on some handset/OS combinations (not just iPhone, but WP7); in three months or less, one, if not both exclusives, go away. WP7 handsets launch on Big Red 1Q 2011 as well, so that means no OS/handset advantage for AT&T Mobility (Sprint doesn't have one). Voice coverage? Locally, VZW wins in a rout; where I travel, VZW still wins. Data? With LTE launched in this area (Washington, DC's Metro Area was a VZW LTE Launch Zone, along with all three of the region's airports) data coverage is also a major LTE Advantage; I'll be going with a USB LTE stick with either a netbook or notebook. So no tethering/need to tether, but solid transfer rates when I need them, and I don't get raped on price.)

Sounds like 1Q 2K11 is win-win for Big Red (and their customers) to me.

Anecdotal 'survey'

In my work as a rural internet tech, I work for lots of folks with droid phones
Of the folks who are not big techie types, many have droids because of ATT
Once Verizon has an iPhone they, like me, will switch asap

My techie friends and customers prefer the more 'open' android

Many of us just want a smart phone that just works and don't care about the open/closed OS

The droid is a fine device
The iPhone is just a bit more polished and well engineered...

Just wait, the droid/iPhone numbers will change dramatically once the iPhone gets out of the ATT cage
