Another Four Markets Get AT&T LTE
Grand Rapids, Nashua, Wilkes Barre, and Auburn-Opelika
by Karl Bode 09:42AM Wednesday Dec 12 2012 Tipped by en103 See Profile
AT&T's LTE deployment keeps chugging along, the carrier announcing new LTE launches in four new (admittedly small) markets: Auburn-Opelika, Ala.; Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; Grand Rapids, Mich. and Nashua, New Hampshire. AT&T's handy dandy LTE deployment pdf now states that the company has deployed LTE in 109 markets, covering more than 150 million potential customers. The company's entire current HSPA footprint should be covered with LTE by the end of 2014, reaching 300 million potential customers.

Where are all the people that bitch?

I mean, seriously. Where are the same 6 people that will piss and moan, whine and cry about Sprint lighting up a small town with LTE?

exactly... . Bet you it's like 6 cell sites they upgraded...

They're only complaining because Sprint's putting the little towns ahead of big cities. (Sprint hasn't launched LTE in NYC, San Francisco, Seattle, Detroit or Phoenix, but LTE has launched in oddball places like 'South Bend, IN')

AT&T has already rolled out LTE in almost every major city, so there's less to complain about when they roll out in smaller cities.

Smaller cities and rural areas are really all they have left to cover.

Re: Where are all the people that bitch?

And the fact that Sprint is completely replacing/installing all new base stations as opposed to at&t that is simply adding equipment..

They're not as good as Verizon, but at least they're way ahead of Sprint.

Not to mention that Sprint had cities like Chicago covered prior to them deciding to spin Xhom off to Clear and then sitting and NOT doing anything for how long?

South Bend, In oddball? You mean Notre Dame University. With thousands of customers and tens of thousands of visitors on game days? Why would Sprint ever want to build out LTE there?

It's nice to see how aggressive AT&T has been with LTE

I'd love to see LTE get turned on in Palm Coast, FL. We are right smack in the middle of two markets that were just turned on not to long ago. Come this way AT&T!

2014?

Is it just me or did it used to be at the end of 2013, or is that Verizon I'm thinking about? (I'm not sure if big red is even going to upgrade 100% of it's EVDO network).

I feel like I got excited knowing it was at most another year before we had a nation wide LTE on AT&T but man, TWO years, that seems far off for some reason

Re: 2014?

Yup. AT&T originally said it would be "largely complete" with its LTE deployment by end of 2013 per: »www.theverge.com/2012/1/5/268476···lte-2013.... Doesn't look like that's happened...

Verizon will complete its LTE deployment by mid-2013, covering its entire existing 3G footprint, 6 months ahead of schedule: »news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-575475···id-2013/

I must've missed all of 2013 since T hasn't completed their LTE build yet? Who knows what largely complete means to them anyways.
In all fairness it looks like they are building where the demand for service is high. They can't build everywhere at once.

Well that's sad. I didn't mind AT&T's lagging behind so much when I was thinking that in the end they would only been about 6 months or so behind Big Red in getting a full build out but now they're a full year or more behind them.

Re: 2014?

That is a very old article, from when AT&T did not plan to cover their entire HSPA+ footprint with LTE. AT&T's original plan would have only covered major cities by the end of 2013- not much more than they have already deployed up until now. However, with the announcement of Project VIP at the beginning of November, they have seriously changed their plans. They now plan to cover essentially their entire US coverage footprint with LTE by the end of 2014, with HSPA+ to fall back on. Not to mention building thousands of new cell sites in that same time. Good luck competing with that, Verizon!

Small?

In all fairness, IIRC the greater Grand Rapids area (including the surrounding communities) is close to 1M people. Not that small.

Depending on your definition of greater GR, either 750K or 1.3 M. See »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Rapi···tan_area. 1 M is a good number....

Yes Grand Rapids is one of the only cities in Michigan that has sustained growth and I would dare so would be more profitable than any city on the east side.

Maine got it first

Portland (Maine) now has AT&T LTE, Springfield (Mass) does not have it yet. Verizon upgraded Springfield to LTE before Maine.

I used to have AT&T but I am now with VZW.

2g rant

I wonder how long after 2014 AT&T will start to upgrade their massive 2G network..

I mean, does burst speed really matter when you can travel a bit and be kicked down to 22KB/s? I would like to see a minimal .5mbit/s for every customer on every tower.

But I suppose, since AT&T dragged their feet this long on those upgrades, they will skip 3g and way until 2018 to upgrade them to LTE?

Re: 2g rant

I'd just be happy to have service from any carrier. It's a joke they want to kill copper but they don't service all the customers that are carried by copper.

Alright!

Now I can reach my monthly bandwidth allotment in 4 minutes (seriously, no joke at all).
Please let me know when new users can either get on an unlimited bandwidth plan, or ditch mobile data totally. It's a complete scam to pay all this extra money for something I literally cannot use.

It's like a fire hose hooked to a bucket. 27 minutes of 720p Netflix streaming and after that, enjoy huge overages!
