Another ISP Suspends NebuAD Trials
Centurytel suspends trials in face of Congressional inquiry...

On the heels of Charter's decision last week to suspend their use of NebuAD user tracking ad technology, I'm seeing hints that CenturyTel may be doing the same thing. In addition to reworking their privacy page, the company is e-mailing customers who ask to inform them that plans to implement the gear have been "delayed." Carriers are concerned after Congress showed hints they could be investigating the technology because it potentially violates several Federal wiretap and privacy laws. From an e-mail to a subscriber:

CenturyTel is not currently using online behavioral advertising tools in any of its markets, and we are delaying our plans to move forward with the deployment of online behavioral advertising services - either through NebuAd or any other vendor - at this time. CenturyTel is delaying its implementation plans so that Congress can spend additional time addressing the privacy issues and policies associated with online behavioral advertising.

Of course, an employee at one ISP tells me NebuAD is promising ISPs that they're developing a new opt-out system that is IP-address based. The current cookie-based system only stops targeted ad delivery; it doesn't opt the user out of browsing tracking (potentially running afoul of three laws). Should NebuAD's new opt-out mechanism please Congress (something I'm sure lobbyists are already working on), you will see these plans revisited.

Seem this would only be valid for those that bought the static IP address from their provider, those on the dynamic IP list will find this very annoying to say the least, if they have to "opt-out" every day or two when the IP changes.

Ah, NebuAD is just a bad idea all together. I'll point out my signature again, but the funny thing is, ever since the news came out that they were "going to stop and wait for Congress", traffic to the site in the sig has dropped to almost nill as well. Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside that consumers feel that they have other ways at fighting back that are just as effective as the political. So I imagine that if the next news article "NebuAD going live tomorrow" then traffic will spike again to the millions of hits it was generating before.

It's one site I won't mind taking down one day when it is no longer useful.

More likely congressmen are holding their hands out to, legalize a loophole into wiretap laws.

I'm sure Bush would love to stick in some way to make wiretapping without warrants legal through some new law like this. In fact they would not have to, the CIA just sets up a shell company to suck up the information under the ruse of legit business.

It has already happened. Retroactive immunity for the telcos has done just that, but this time der Bushler & his minions aren't 100% at fault since the Congress is now controlled by the Demublicans. And Obamapalooza, who initially was against telco immunity, has just decided that he is now for it. Meet the new boss....same as the old one.

Opt-out Based On IP Address

I see a really big problem with this. (Knowing that NebuAd is not being implimented just yet, in some areas.)

What happens when the IP Address changes, either from the user changing how they connect to the modem or from the ISP in renewing the IP to the customer?

How does average Mr. and Mrs. Joe Internet User know when it happens? Usually, they don't have a clue. And unless the ISP's are planning on going all static IP's to their customers, this suggested OPt-Out scheme is also full of holes.
Those of use who visit here and those who work in the IT field will keep an ete on the IP addresses, but Joe and Jane user won't have a clue, and therefore when the IP address changes either through their actions or that of the ISP, then the NebuAd system will have them targeted, much to the average users surprise and disgust.

The well-known site www.google.com was used by NebuAd to inject their cookie-inserting javascript. Now NebuAd seems to have bought AdWords to point out their Privacy Policy.

It's nice to see Google make some money off of the guys that are piggy-backing off of their home page!

It is simply a matter of how much this will cost them in political contributions. I don't see a PAC of cable customers offering up any of their money so this is a fait accompli.
