Antennagate Hurt iPhone Sales...
But not as much as the AT&T exclusive partnership
by Karl Bode Thursday 09-Sep-2010 tags: business · wireless · hardware
Ignoring the fact the study cited has a ridiculously-tiny sample size of just 258 users, Fortune cites a study from Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster claiming that Apple's "antennagate" (aka that still unfixed flaw in the iPhone 4 antenna Steve Jobs and his disciples insist isn't real) cost the company an estimated 20% in sales. According to the survey however, nearly three times as many customers have yet to buy an iPhone because it isn't available on Verizon. On the plus side, Apple's new iOS 4.1 update includes the ability to put the phone into field test mode, which will allow you to watch your signal strength degrade in numeric form, just like on a big boy phone!

Awwwwww

Poor Apple, hurt because they denied the phone had an issue, a BIG issue.

WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

If they would just f'ing man up and ADMIT these issues when they pop up, instead of denying the issue, they wouldn't lose money.

The big tell will be come September 30 when they "revisit" the case program. With the rumors swirling an updated phone is on the way that would fix the issue it will be interesting to see if it is true. Of course Apple will say "if you took advantage of the free bumper/case program you cannot receive a replacement".

Admitting there was an issue publically would cost them more sales. I remember reading a rumor that they're planning on unveiling a fixed version of the phone later this month.

And lying about it probably cost them a lot more then not admitting it.

Wasn't there also a rumor (or maybe Jobs publicly stated it) that there would NOT be redesigned hardware?

yes, we will, i seriously and highly doubt that the color of the phone, unless you are a serious apple sheeple, affects sales, I would bet most people are more concerned about the antenna issue than the color of that POS phone.

Or just JB and see it numerically.

Maybe the JB version is the 'big boy phone'?

And journalism takes another step into the septic-tank

Continuing to call things -gate is bad enough, but to claim a sample group of 258 cell phone users gives any usable data at all is just insane. And from CNN no less.

Re: And journalism takes another step into the septic-tank

Did you read the article? I agree that this sample size is to small to be of much value, but so does the article! Right up front.

I'm one who would have upgraded, but didn't because of the antenna problem.

Add one to the number.

Agreed, I'm soooo freaking tired of every incident and/or scandal being called x-gate. Sometimes I think every journalist on the planet thinks history began with Watergate.

Anandtech takes snr readings for all their smartphone reviews now; the iPhone 4 is consistently significantly worse in terms of signal strength drop for every category. The data is, at this point, quantitative and indisputable, whatever Apple says.

Their most recent such readings are from their Samsung Epic 4G review (bottom of the page):

Every phone suffers from some drop in signal strength, yes. The iPhone 4 just suffers a heck of a lot more than any other device. Remember than decibels are logarithmic, so the ~25dB that the iPhone 4 loses is actually more than twice the loss of the iPhone 3GS's ~14dB loss.

I agree.

Id like to see a much larger pool of people polled, and in more than one city.

But dont you find it odd that here we are down the road a good bit from when this problem surfaced and people are not only still buying basically as many phones as Apple can make, but that largely you can barely ever find a actual iPhone 4 user complaining about the antenna issue.

I find it mind boggling that if millions of users where having an issue that is made out to be that you basically cant make phone calls on it that there would not be massive lines of people taking these things back and complaining all over the place, public, internet, to friends, family, and more.... Why is it the media shapes this up to being a massive issue, but actual users are largely quiet and happy with their phones?

I look forward to new numbers on returned phones if Apple will release that as they did awhile back.

The problem with Iphone sales is always Apple's doing.

The problem with Iphone sales is always Apple's doing. They put out a great product, then they shit on it and their customers.

I had planned to buy an Iphone since I was very happy with my Ipod Touch. That was until Apple came out with IOS updates that turned my Touch to crap and also crippled wifi scanning that I use every day and banned them from the app store. (this all besides the AT&T exclusivity and antenna gate)

Statistically Insiginifgant

Talking to 258 people in one section of Minneapolis does not provide enough data to accurately extrapolate what affects the antenna issue has on nationwide sales.

It was irresponsible for Fortune to even run this story, and I think just as irresponsible for DSLR to run it too.

3times as many

customers will still have yet to buy the phone. I still say the CDMA phone will never see VZW as VZ will NOT give up their VCast on that phone and take iTunes and the $$$ they make from VCast. Sprint is more likely to see that phone than VZW.

I have an Android phone from Verizon, and I don't see any sign of VCast on my phone. I can download it from the market if I want.

thats the Android phone then. the others phones do have VCast. That is how they download their music and other software that VZ wants you to have. thats where they make the $$$ off ring tones.

Hurt sales....

But still there is a 3 week wait....

*pats on head* sure it hurt sales.

Edit: why does this story persist? I've used dozens of iPhone 4's none of them had any problem aside from some of the humorously poor choice in app selection on the part of the owner, and even that was a minority...

Wait someone told you to expect that after x/y/z time frame you wouldn't be able to recreate the issue? This is real breaking news now, or are you just making this stuff up as you go.

Here is a conclusion, jump to it.
The wait for an iphone 4 is around to one week. The antenna issue is also able to be recreated still.

Who said it cant be recreated? Jobs even didn't say that. Were do you get this crap?

Jobs did say, and its clear that depending on your signal to start with that it will effect people differently and some people cant get it to drop at all.

It's just a statement, no need to get amped up. I mentioned that there is a reason the story persists because it was never fixed. Fairly clear there.
The interesting thing will be what happens the end of this month.

If you think todays media is reporting news for your sake you really are out of touch. They report things to sell commericals. Dont kid yourself.

The story ended a long time ago for iPhone users... they are happy with their phones or the ones that aren't took them back.

Same reason the media reports many things, to cash in on its popularity. The media will often report, let it die, then retest a subject to see if its still got legs.

actually kind of offensive

statistically speaking this survey isn't even inaccurate it's offensive. They've extrapolated a correlation based on data that was incorrectly gathered and analyzed.

AntennaGate

It was a big deal because the media made it big. AT&T and Apple has loyal followers who ignored this "blown out of proportion"news story and upgraded anyway. With 24/7 news the media has to do something to fill the space!

Zero bars

Sitting in the ATT reseller's office in MI with a friend who had reception issues on his 3GS phone, I notice no bars on my iPhone. I handed it to the sales person at ATT and wondered how the heck they could, with a straight face, sell phones from an office with zero bars. I finally switched to Verizon until apple ends it exclusive relationship with ATT (less bars in more places). Tired of paying $$ for marginal or no service at my place in MI and work place in SC. In the Chicago area, where I live, I can live ATTs crappy service.
