Anti-CISPA Petition Hits White House Comment Threshold
Assuming That Does Anybody Any Good...
A petition on the White House website urging the Obama administration to stop CISPA has received the 100,000 signatures necessary to get a White House response. CISPA "creates broad legal exemptions that allow the government to share "cyber threat intelligence" with private companies, and companies to share "cyber threat information" with the government, for the purposes of enhancing cybersecurity," argues the petition. "The problems arise from the definitions of these terms, especially when it comes to companies sharing data with the feds." The last CISPA crumbled in the aftershocks of SOPA, but with many companies (like Verizon and AT&T) supporting this bill, the second attempt may be more successful.

Push for cyber security is the new DOD priority

With all the recent press coming from Washington about how cyber attacks are more dangerous to national security than al Qaida, the WH response will be that this bill is needed. This will be a bi-partisan supported bill and it will be passed. With major companies in US being attacked daily by both criminal hackers and by foreign governments, it will also have corporate support.

And how will Obama respond to the CISPA petition? This might give you a strong hint:
»news.yahoo.com/obama-mee ··· nce.html

Cyber security threats against the United States are growing, President Barack Obama said before a meeting on Wednesday with corporate leaders about the issue, as concerns rise about hacking attacks emanating from China. "What is absolutely true is that we have seen a steady ramping up of cyber security threats." Some of the threats are "absolutely" sponsored by governments, he said. "Some are state sponsored. Some are just sponsored by criminals."

Obama signed an executive order a month ago directing authorities to improve information sharing on cyber threats. However, such orders do not carry the weight of law and Obama told ABC that Congress has to act.

hahahaha.

don't know if you are a troll or just drunk on the terror, terror, terror Koolaid, but "cyber security/warfare" is just the next gov't gimmick to keep the sheeple afraid and funnel big $$$ to the defense industry.

with the wars finally winding down, the private industry leeches need another income stream or they might have to reduce the CEOs bonus.

that new income stream is "cyber security"

I'd have to agree with you.

Other countries are manipulating this one to the point of ridiculousness.

Looks at 9/11.. people were handing over all their freedoms for better protection. Now, people want to be better protected while on the Internet.. so guess what.. let's have the government watch what everyone does on the Internet, too.

No wonder other countries are laughing at us.

What a total scam

The people who sign these White House "petitions" should realize there is only one reason the White House website has a button to start them, and that is to get your e-mail address, nothing more they could care less about the what the petition is about. They will give lip service to an issue to scam people into thinking they care and in the meantime they have that valuable e-mail address they can spread around the Democratic fund raising mafia. Now you will start getting all kinds of, If you don't contribute to the Save the Ragweed Fund, the nasty..............(fill in the blank) will destroy this vital plant so important to the endangered purple pooped horned fly.
This is true for all of these online petitions they are trolling for e-mail addresses.

There would be irony is suing the government via the CAN-SPAM Act.

CISPA

The DOD will have their way on this one but hopefully we can at least get some clarification on WHAT information is being shared and some modicum of protection from government and private sector violations. The DOD needs some new boogeyman to keep its budget from being slashed and what better way than to link this vaguely defined topic.

Who knows, maybe it won't take nearly a year this time...

Maybe it won't take nearly a year for them to respond to this one.

See this petition thing for what it is

I wish people would see this petition thing for what it is: a glorified suggestion box. And when I say that, I refer to the suggestion boxes that are set up for a company's customers or employees--the boxes that are checked, but the suggestions are only implemented if they're convenient or in line with what the company wanted to do anyway.

The defeat of SOPA/PIPA didn't happen because people very politely filed petitions; it happened because there was a huge outcry that hit Washington like a tsunami, and it helped that many members of Congress were completely blindsided by it. They never saw it coming, and I expect that they never imagined that many people would care about these bills. When the calls started flooding in, they panicked and ran for cover. It also helped that the only entities arguing in favor of these bills were a few big companies, and, even though they had thrown around lots of money, the pressure to run away from these bills was overwhelming.

The problem here is that it's hard to keep up that kind of pressure with every bad bill that comes along. Right now, Congress and their backers are playing the tune, and everyone else has to react. That means that they can wear us down with bad bill after bad bill, knowing that we can't keep up the pressure all the time, especially over the long term, so they'll eventually get one through. The only way this will change is if enough people who believe in civil liberties get organized and get extremely loud, obnoxious, and disciplined in demanding what they want. Look at the religious right. As much as I despise what they stand for, I have to give them credit for their organization and persistence. These people know what they want, they articulate it very well, and they're willing to go after any politician who defies them. Until those of us who believe in civil liberties are willing to do the same, we're going to lose more battles than we win.

They better raise the petition signatures again

They won't like having this one make it to the threshold.

Old purple lips will simply ignore what the people want. He is, after all, our Great Leader. Everything we have comes as a result of his gracefully giving to us, for he is the one, the most merciful and most kind. Were it not for him, the US would surely crumble overnight.

Re: .

That's all you libs have left in the tank, isn't it? Since your guy has no redeeming qualities left whatsoever, just call anyone who points it out a racist, and you win!!

Childish, really...

Edit: Wait, you're from BC? Then you really have no dog in the fight, anyway. So you just get off on calling anyone who doesn't agree with collectivism disguised as sickly-sweet loving liberalism a racist, is that correct?

I want you to tell me, precisely, where I mentioned anything racist. Not your libtard imagination, but facts. I'll bet you can't. Come on Juggie...we're all waiting for your words of wisdom. Let's hear 'em.
