Apple Finally To Approve Google Voice
Should appear in the app store soon...
You might recall the big stink raised last year after Apple banned Google Voice from the application store. AT&T and Apple of course played dumb to suggestions that either acted anti-competitively to block an application that poses a significant threat to both the old telco or phone OS business models. With Uncle Sam sniffing around Apple on numerous fronts, Apple recently eased iPhone developer restrictions -- and now it appears that the official Google Voice app will finally be arriving on the iPhone. According to Techcrunch, the app has actually already been approved and will pop up soon:
quote:
...we've gotten word that the official Google Voice application is on its way to the iPhone in the next few weeks. In fact, we've heard from a source close to Google that it's already been approved -- Google just needs to revamp the application to work with the iPhone 4 and iOS's multitasking capabilities. If you're a Google Voice user and you're on an iPhone, this is great news.
As we've explored at length, applications like Google Voice are going to speed up the death of concepts like SMS and voice minutes, given that things like mobile VoIP and push IM make them irrelevant. With reduction in that revenue, carriers like AT&T and Verizon are eagerly looking forward to jacking up mobile data costs with new low cap, high overage data plans.

Re: Wow!

lol right.

On a similar subject though, I would like to submit this as an example of COMPETITION. App Store submissions are down. Most of the industry agrees that Android will take over the market within the next year and a half. The future for Apple is looking more and more like a rehash of the Mac vs PC battle. And Android's recent sales success comes very much at Apple's expense. This all is forcing Apple to open up its system, and generally implement what its customers have been demanding for 3 years: transparency.

Do prying government eyes help speed up this process? Maybe. But it's more a coincidence than cause and effect. Government takes years to make a case, bring it to trial, and finally settle. There's little incentive to "shape up" anytime soon.
But businesses have to respond to the market every quarter.

Is that a sign that Android is more popular/better/etc, or that the market is just completely saturated with thousands of identical or at least extremely similar apps that, in many cases, no one really cares about and it's not worth a developer's time/money to submit one more duplicated app?

It's just a factor in a set of circumstances that would influence Apple to finally loosen up the reigns a bit. I think it is indeed a sign that Android has reached maturity, but I agree that it's just as (if not more) likely that the AppStore is saturated with many very similar or one-trick apps with very limited usefulness.

have you used it since it lately? As someone who currently has google voice integrated on about 4 different android devices it has been revamped and works great. On my nexus one it is seemless and with the widgets you couldn't ask for easier navigation.

Dunno, it works perfectly fine on my X10 including its settings widget (off/on/always ask/int'l calls only) and I use it for all my int'l calls.

They're late....

GV Mobile+ is already available and works great for me! I was fortunate to get it for free on Sunday during it's 'sale' period.

GV Mobile is nice, but hopefully the official app will have push notifications and better integration.

Yeah its okay although the texts for some reason don't show the dates and noticed some synch issues as well..

And I am not too fond of 'callbacks'. Hopefully the native iphone app will incorporate the faster dialing mechanism available on Android.

There is also a "GV Connect" app as well.

I'm returning my Captivate as we speak...

I've had nothing but issues with my GPS on my Captivate (but that's a whole other issue). My main reason for going with the Captivate was Google Voice. I plan on going back to the iPhone and I'm ecstatic that the official Google Voice app is going to be approved.

I love my Captivate. The screen is better than the iPhone, GPS works great for me, especially after the recent firmware update, and I just like how much I can customize Android.

Any word on whether or not this will include sms push notifications on the new itouch?

Doesn't seem like this would be a lot to ask since it works so well on Android.

I loved the phone too but the GPS and the tech support was horrid. Their answer on the fix: "Froyo may fix it, or it may not, but we don't have a fix in the works."

The AT&T over the air update last week was supposed to address it. I don't have time to tinker with shit every day like what I was doing with the Captivate. I miss the screen, but happy I switched back to the iPhone.

It won't work. Google Voice isn't VOIP... It still uses your cellular minutes. It's only a phone number alternative (for example, my Google Voice number rings my work cell, personal cell, office line and my home office line with only one number)

I can't believe people *still* don't understand that.

This shouldn't be news unless you can install the app on the phone.

Considering the back and forth in the past over it I see no reason why it would not be news.

Unless it is just a rumor to keep potential iPhone buyers from defecting to Android phones.

I won't believe this till I see it.

Re: Has It Happened Yet?

Considering there is GV+ already in the App Store for download I don't see why it would.
