Apple, disgusted with Rogers Wireless for dumping egregious service plans on would-be iPhone 3G buyers, has decided that its Canadian retail stores will have no part in helping the carrier market the new handset to customers, AppleInsider has learned.
As a result, Canadian Apple Retail stores won't be selling the new 3G touchscreen phones come Friday, representatives for the Cupertino-based company said during a private conference call on Monday evening. Instead, it will be up to Rogers and its partner Fido to lock subscribers into steep 3-year contracts that require a minimum monthly payment of $60 for just 150 minutes, 75 text messages, and 400MB of data.
Calls to Canadian Apple retail stores early Tuesday confirmed the move once over. Although the majority of the of stores contacted by AppleInsider said they were still unsure whether they'd be selling the new iPhone, one representative ultimately confirmed that Rogers and its partner stores will be the only place to buy iPhone 3G come Friday. Canadian Apple retail stores will, however, have demo units on hand the same day.
Word of Apple's abandonment of in-store sales comes just days after the company was reported to have sanctioned Rogers by diverting a significant amount of Canada's iPhone 3G shipments to Europe as initial retribution. As a result, the Canadian carrier will likely receive only about 10 to 20 units per store, and therefore should "exercise caution" not to promise ample stock on launch day, people familiar with the matter have said. Looks like Apple is putting heat on Rogers big time. Look for Rogers to fold SOON. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page

| Can you really be so dense?
Apple wants the iPhone to sell. And as witnessed with AT&T, part of what really helped iPhone sales was that the plans most commonly chosen/available were those that allowed users to take advantage of the iPhone's capabilities (namely, unlimited access to the mobile web and texting services, albeit with some ridiculously long paper bills).
By comparison, Robbers' plans here are going to be intensely stifling to users; so much so that many potential customers will no doubt be turned off and choose something else, even if the iPhone had everything they wanted out of a product.
Apple (while indirectly) is very much affected by such a draconian plan and requirement on the part of Robbers.

| The CAD is still close to the USD "1 Canadian dollar = 0.982608 U.S. dollars" so yes, they ARE expensive.
Canada needs more GSM competitions. I really hope Apple develop a CDMA phone for Canada (Telus and Bell both have CDMA networks) just to shove it to Rogers.

| Typical Rogers... All I have to say Hopefully no one is stupid enough to buy one of these overpriced plans. Let Rogers suffer and realize their mistake. If people start buying it, Rogers will only get the advantage and not do anything about it.
As for the blog post, I bet it's fake and all this is doing is pressuring consumers into buying an iPhone more if there is "limited availability" which there most likely won't be.
Rogers is out of their mind with these plans. How these plans were approved beats me, not a single one of the individuals responsible for finalizing these plans didn't think for a second "Hey... maybe our plans are fucking ridiculous compared to America's data plans." -- Life is a game of blackjack. If Rogers/Fido iPhone plans were priced identically to those of ATT, there would have been a great sucking sound as Rogers would have scooped up huge numbers of Telus and Bell customers, far in excess of what Rogers have forecast for their current pricing model.
Matching ATT pricing/features would have severely hurt both Bell and Telus. And the Rogers/Fido network could accomodate such an influx of customers and data demands.

I'm glad you are happy with Rogers (Although you didn't say that... do you have a choice to go to another carrier?) It is a 3 year plan, which is longer than any other cell phone company on Earth. There are a lot of things that could make you change your mind during those three years, and a change in income (for the worse) is possible. I've seen it happen and people were forced into early termination clauses because it was cheaper.
It is a lot of extra cost for no real benefit. A pure money grab. There is nothing 'special' about Rogers. They use the same equipment that they do here in the States which means that every dollar you spend over the US plan rates is simply extra money that you are tossing to Roger's shareholders for no benefit.
If you don't mind paying extra for nothing, then could you do me a favor and just send it my way. I'd even send you a personal thank you card, which is more than you would receive from Rogers.

| Re: No iPhone for you! No heavily used phone will last 3 years. If you are in a 3 year contract, not only are you locked into the high rates for 3 years but if you need a phone to make use of the remaining time on the contract, you will have to pay full price.
IIRC the Iphone does not have a user replaceable battery, so right there is the first failure point. Li batteries typically last 2 years with normal charging frequency.
But then again, if some one can afford those rates, they can pop for a new phone at list price. -- The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits.
