Apple, New iPods, Wi-Fi
And the iPhone gets a price drop...

You may have heard that a small California company by the name of Apple has released a suite of new iPods, including a fatter iPod Nano, a beefier 160GB iPod Classic and a new iPod dubbed iPod Touch. There's ample discussion in our Macintosh forums about the new features of each.

We mention this because the Touch integrates Wi-Fi (802.11b/g, not n), and is essentially an iPhone without the phone. It comes in 8GB and 16GB flavors, and costs $299 and $399, respectively. The device comes with a browser and makes use of the new Wi-Fi Apple store, which was also launched today.

We also mention the launch because apparently Apple has discontinued the 4GB iPhone (on clearance for $299). Apple also dropped the price of the 8GB version $200 from $599 to $399, annoying some early adopters.

Tuaw notes that if you purchased an iPhone in the last 14 days you're due a refund in accordance with the Apple store return policy. Also, some credit cards will refund the difference in price for items purchased within 60 days. If none of that works, you can always just call Apple and beg and/or yell.

Can you say brand fatigue

Set your watch, because the greed of stockholders will drive jobby-jobs to an inevitable market saturation point untenable to a product image built on anything BUT ubiquity. Everyone and their mother owning a Mac will act as a giant Windex-soaked rag and wipe the sheen right off those one and two grand polished Apples sooner than you can say "upgraded teh video card."

I've always thought it a house of cards -- their entire 'anti-' false perception thing -- and I run Mac exclusively. You can't be different and sexy and anti-big brother AND make all your products in China; run attack commercials against your only true competitor, and grow your stock at the holder's behest and hold onto the same 1984 anti-establishment image you so carefully crafted to sell the stuff in the first place.

It's a catch-22 not even snobby-fobs can BS his way out of. Oh, they'll be riding a wave for awhile, that you can't deny. But it will be a quick one unless prices come down considerably or new markets allow the computer arm to stay aloft the Dells and HPs of the world in price & perception. Apple, like any high-end product line -- real or perceived -- has built an image partly by keeping the riff-raff from having seats. What's Henry "I just spent 2 grand on an iMac" Highclass going to say when Larry "trailer park" Lowclass spent $900 and change on a slower model with less CPU that looks exactly the same except in size?

Do the words "F this" have any meaning for you, Apple stock holders?
