Apple Preps for Two iPhone Summer Launches
The Next iPhone 5 Variant and a Cheaper iPhone Model
by Karl Bode 08:35AM Friday Apr 05 2013
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Apple is getting ready to fire up production of two new iPhone models: an updated successor to the iPhone 5, and a smaller, cheaper iPhone to be aimed squarely at more cost-conscious users. Details are scarce, though sources tell the Journal the iPhone 5 successor (iPhone 5S?) should start production in the second quarter for a summer launch. The less-expensive iPhone also being produced may come in a variety of colors but will likely use "a different casing from the higher-end iPhone" and possibly come in a variety of colors.

Yawn

Upgrade fatigue, not really caring what Apple and Samsung are up to in mobility these days. Waiting for the next revolution, passing on evolution.

Re: Yawn

Looking at a Nexus 4 right now, any slight delay is Samsung's bloated touchwiz UI. Also I use an iPad 3 and I'm sorry but apps take just as long to load if not longer.

I have no lag whatsoever. Also apple users tend to notice one slight delay in Android and say it's slow, but ignore any delay's on iOS because they believe the very outdated Android is slow meme.

Well if all you're doing is looking at it, of course it's slow.

Hate to say it but...if you have an S3 and it's "slow", you're doing it wrong.

Re: Yawn

Well, it was true up until Android 4.1... Project Butter finally resolved that problem, but that was only at the end of 2012 that they finally resolve the issue.

I tried using Apple's navigation last week while on vacation. The route that Siri picked for me took me down a dangerously winding and narrow road in the dark for 6 miles when there was a 4 lane highway that ran parallel to the same location that was 4 miles long.

Re: Yawn

Well if you're going to compare it to an iPhone 4, then sure it's not slow.

But the iPhone 4 is pretty slow.

My android is not buggy.
Now I have had some buggy things on my ipad.
I actually had safari crash somehow and then it would not work again until I restarted the ipad. I have no idea how it happened, but apple is buggy.

What's the point of a cheaper iPhone?

I'm really not sure I understand the business model behind a "cheaper iPhone". I feel like the current model of discounting older models is a great model. A lower priced model will probably be equivalent to last years model anyway.

I agree with others as well -- I have cell phone model upgrade fatigue. There are so many announcements and phones being introduced it's actually getting quite old. I love all the technology, but the market is just flooded and nothing really wows anymore (perhaps because we see so much now).

Probably bringing back the iphone 3gs to take the place of the iphone 4/4s, which will maximize revenue.

three reasons

1. make current iphone5 a mid range product
2. make non lightning ports obsolete thereby earning more money on everybody have to buy new accessories
3. go after low end market and maybe mvnos (like senior citizens that want an iphone but balk at paying more than $50 a month for postpaid or more than $199 for a phone via prepaid and have too much problems learning android)

i base #3 on what ive seen so far with most peoples parents

It does make some sense, folks want the latest and greatest but want it cheap. At the same time do you really want a phone that is already one generation old and will be 3 to 4 generations old, by the time your contract is up?

Apple can't scale.

Up till now last year's model was the "cheaper model" Now they are going to try with a "new cheap" model. It won't work. People buy iPhones for the quality. At this point if people aren't buying iPhones it is because they don't want one, not because they can't afford one. The exceptions are India and CHina where Apple is getting its ass handed to it by Windows Phone and Android....but the large difference there is Nokia is producing quality and affordable phones and enough people are getting them to realize the OS really is better than iOS.

Cheaper iPhone

The cheaper iPhone will probably target the prepaid market where people refuse to pay $649 (and up) for a phone.

I'll stick with my iPhone 5 until I'm upgrade eligible 18 months from Dec 2012 (when I bought my current iPhone 5).

As long as the phone accesses the VZW LTE network, its fine by me. That LTE network is like a mobile cable modem although it is a battery killer. I have to charge my phone every night or I'll be stuck on the go without a phone.

I've experienced ImOn (when they were McLeod USA), Mediacom, Comcast, and Time Warner and I currently have DirecTV. They are much better than broadcast TV.

I have not and will not cut the cord.

I don't find LTE to be a battery killer on my Sprint iPhone 5. In fact it's quite good. Average use I can go two days... heavy use (rare) it'll still easily last to the end of the work day and more.

I have more than once been caught on the go with a dead battery and you can't plug a car charger into public transportation.

Re: Cheaper iPhone

That's weird, I wonder if it's a VZW iPhone issue. I consider myself a fairly heavy user from 8-5 (work iphone) and I usually end the day with anywhere from 40-60% on an average day.. 20% on heavy usage day.

Re: Cheaper iPhone

I guess that makes me a VERY heavy user. It's both my work and personal phones, so I'm lucky if its not on the charger in the afternoon.

Re: Cheaper iPhone

It might depend on location or if it's constantly looking for a signal as well - I have great LTE reception at work. However, if I'm in Dallas and have low signal levels or it's switching between 3g/LTE, it drains significantly faster which is to be expected. I send/receive large amounts of e-mail every day & use it for scheduling purposes as well & frequent phone calls. Pretty decent battery life though. It outdoes my Android phone by far..

Re: Cheaper iPhone

This. I've noticed that this is the biggest contributing factor on battery drain on the iphone. Travelling from PA to FL via 95, my battery will die in half the time of normal routine - with less use. It has to be the constant switching of towers and hunting 3g/edge

That does make a difference. In my case the big killer is that I use VOIP for my home line and I'm on LTE.

Constant refresh to the server = dead battery (on LTE) in about three hours.

It could be a VZW issue as the other half of VZW is CDMA and CDMA is a battery killer. Sometimes my phone connects to EVDO instead of LTE (especially in the Northampton/Amherst area and up in Maine). GSM is gentler on batteries than CDMA.

What is not being reported is this cheaper iPhone is intended for the Chinese market and is not slated at this time to sell Stateside.

I still fail to see why charging every night is considered such a hassle, if a phone lasts me the entire day until I go to bed I'm good. Maybe other people do, but I don't normally use my phone while I'm sleeping.

And I am with you, I put my S3 on charge every night. It's my alarm clock
