Apple Selling Unsubsidized iPhones
$599 for 8GB, $699 for 16GB
by Karl Bode Friday 27-Mar-2009 tags: prices · business · wireless
Last week we noted that AT&T had finally started selling unsubsidized (no contract) iPhones for the rock bottom price of $599 for the 8GB version, and $699 for the 16GB version. Of course, in baby bell fashion, AT&T then proceeded to make the offer even less valuable to consumers by restricting the purchase to one per customer, and to only customers who were under contract with AT&T -- completely defeating the purpose in the first place. But there's some good news for those who really are in the mood to overpay for the device to avoid a contract: Apple is now selling the unsubsidized iPhones as well, with no such restrictions.

Interesting...

It's interesting that Apple is selling the device as well. I would think that there was some type of an agreement involved with this (as there has been throughout the whole iPhone + AT&T marriage) but I guess I was wrong.

It's a great phone (and I have one), but I would not be paying $700 for it.

Re: Interesting...

The two year exclusivity is up. Time to pop some corn, crack open a beer and watch the fun. It is a fun toy (as you know) but is a mediocre phone (as you probably also know).

Re: Interesting...

Oh, I have an iPhone. I'm into all the latest things.

Right now, I'm flipping 3 houses. Sure, I have a HELOC on my primary residence, but we all know there's no end to the housing boom.

I'm also heavy into an oil ETF. I bought in at $130/bbl. I CAN'T LOSE! My GM and Dodge stock is about to take off, and I just bought a substantial block of Lehman Bros. I'm in fat city.

No offense to you iPhone folks, but the iPhone was neat, new & hip in 2007. Now, either everyone has one, or everyone has a knock off.

BTW, I'm neither an lover or a hater. I have a Mac, and I have a Blackberry Storm. I picked both of those particular devices because overall, they suited my particular need.

I don't agree. I purchased the iPhone because of what it offers. Endless apps, simple interface, great web browser/mail program, etc. It fits my needs and apparently fits many others as well. To say that this phone was "cool" in 2007 is a bit childish if you ask me. It seems to me many love to hate the iPhone. They don't recognize it for what it really is, a tremendous device that integrates so many things into one.

One could even go as far as saying, without the iPhone, your Blackberry Storm might not be here at this time.

Cheaper on Ebay

You can get a legally unlocked one online for that price.

Does AT&T not know that that price is a huge rip off and that anyone that buys it deserves to be hit in the head and given a V8?

this is true but you also have to have some know some ebay kungfu to make sure that you dont get ripped off by getting a chinese knockoff instead.

in other words, you'll get it off ebay only if you're smart .

Yeah, I've seen those chinese knockoffs on ebay. So what's the word on those? Are they pretty identical to apple's product? Or do they instead expose the user to issues?

Re: Cheaper on Ebay

No offense, but that's a dumb question. When have you ever seen a Chinese knockoff that was "pretty identical to (Insert name here) product"? Answer: never. Anything coming out of China is a bunch of junk that looks just good enough to get money out of you.

Sinec the iPhone is manufactured in China I guess that is a universally true statement.

The good knock offs are running windows mobile, the cheap mass produced ebay models are running symbian.

Pointless in the USA

Even if you have an unlocked iPhone you can only use it on AT&T's 3G network as T-Mobile uses a different frequency.

Furthermore it is still cheaper to buy the phone from AT&T and then break the contract.

@verizon.net

isn't the ETF cheaper?

isn't the ETF only like $250? wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a subsidized phone with a contract and then just pay the ETF. my math is fuzzy but i'm pretty sure $250$400

Too darn expensive

I am sorry but even though I like the product, I cannot justify paying $600-700 for it even as a software engineer I make a good living.

phone ?

have read more than a few reviews about the basic quality of voice calls on the iphone. certainly any wireless product will vary based on proximity to tower----however the consistency of such comments leads one to suspect that there may indeed be an issue in some areas. also, from this perspective, i'm not sure that a required $30/mo data plan justifies the novelty of the product. am considering a touch which would allow us to continue to use a better quality phone while realizing many of the features of the apple product.

Meh...no big deal

I picked up a 3G at the reduced price mainly to mock my dumb@$$ friends for paying $699 when it launched. Sadly A$$T&T service sucks major donkey around my house and job not to mention, My Sprint Centro...

Has a touchscreen
EVDO internet speed
Digicam & video
MS Exchange\MMS\SMS\Pic\Vid mail
Stores 4GB of music
Syncs with multiple music stores (Sprint, Rhapsody, eMusic, Napster)
Has 60,000+ apps available
Has a physical keyboard
Has chat for AOL\Y!M\MSN
Can read\edit Office documents and pdf's
OTA app downloads (my Treo600 did this way back too)
Sprint TV
YouTube

Basically aside from the fanboi factor, better screen, and a few minor details, I wasn't missing anything and one of my buddies gladly took it off my hands so he could spend quality time rubbing his crotch with it.

Iphone vs Itouch cost.

Isuppli published a cost of materials that worked out to about $170 for the Iphone, and a posting puts the subset in the Itouch at about $140.

Apple is selling the Iphone for $599 without subsidy and the Itouch for $229. The $599 seems way out of line.

Especially when you consider the fact that the iPod touch is pretty much exactly the same thing as the iPhone, minus cellphone capabilities.

It is intentionally out of line though: to discourage people from buying them, so that cell phone carriers keep making big bucks selling people expensive contracts. Ah yes, the power of large corporations...
