Apple TV Service Once Again Delayed, This Time Until 2016

2015's already been a rather crowded launch year for Internet video offerings, whether we're talking about Sling TV, Sony's Playstation Vue, or Verizon's upcoming LTE-focused live TV effort. One Internet TV service that may not be appearing in 2015 is a planned subscription TV offering from Apple, which appears to be bogged down in licensing disputes with broadcasters.

Of course these disputes are nothing new. We've noted how Apple has been banging its head against the broadcast and cable industry for years now. This latest impasse appears to be specifically focused around Apple's desire to offer local broadcast channels to users.

And, to nobody's surprised, these slow negotiations have once again delayed the launch of an Apple TV service. But a new report suggests Apple's video delivery infrastructure isn't fully cooked, either:

quote:
The company wanted to introduce this year a live TV service delivered via the Internet, but is now aiming for 2016, said people familiar with Apple’s plans. Talks to license programming from TV networks such as those owned by CBS and 21st Century Fox are progressing slowly, some of the people said. Apple also doesn’t have the computer network capacity in place to ensure a good viewing experience, said some of the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private.
Broadcasters and cable operators have been very wary of giving Apple the kind of control the music industry had to relinquish in order to fight piracy. As such they're effectively terrified of disruption, even though Apple's end product may (with the exception of local live broadcast streams) not be all that different from existing and looming services by Verizon, Sling, and Sony.

In the end an Apple TV deal will get done, but the final product will likely look nothing like Apple's original intentions.

'Apple also doesn't have the computer network capacity'

Based on the WWDC keynotes I've tried to watch live in the past, I believe this statement to be accurate.

Apple screwed over the music industry and took total control

Apple screwed over the music industry and took total control. That is something the video content industry doesn't want to see happen to them. Of course, Steve Jobs was the driving force on Apple's dealings with the music industry. He is dead and the video content providers should be able to cut a better deal with current Apple management than Jobs.

I'm absolutely sure that a $700 Billion company was reeling over it.

You are spot on! The fear on the broadcasting side of the house has got to be massive!

Re: Apple screwed over the music industry and took total control

Apple may not have the clout with video content providers as they did with music but if anyone can convince the content industry to get past the last century schedule-based broadcast biz model and pursue on demand streaming for everything that most want, Apple has a better shot than most others. Hopefully Apple can at least get them to step up a notch. Of course Apple will want exclusives but hopefully it won't be for a long period, as with HBO Now.

Really? Because I am fairly certain that after a little bit of a rough period, music sales have always posted year-over-year increases. Now, instead of having to commit to driving down to Tower Records and buying a CD for $15, I can waste $1.29 at a time, at random, 24x7, with the simple click of the mouse.

At the end of the day, that change was net positive all around. The only people pissed off are a bunch of old white guys in a conference room at the RIAA.

Am I supposed to feel bad that another company put a dent in the hookers-and-blow gravy train over at the record labels? Seriously??

I don't care how much someone hates Apple, I'd vote for them over the pure evil of Hollywood any day of the week.

no apple did not have the kind of money back then they have now

now these broadcasters and content creators see the kinds of money apple is sitting on and they want superbowl/olympic money for even their shit shows, apple sees no way to make money in a crowded field

i doubt if we ever see an apple tv unless they partner with someone or buy out sling

There is also the factor that back then the music industry had the attitude of "who would buy music on the internet when they can line up at Walmart of a nice new release".

Actually they still do kind of have that attitude.

Only way I see anything disruptive happening is if Apple buys/leases spectrum for an LTE broadcast network. Apple likely wants to eliminate carriers like carriers eliminated subsidies.

They'll need more than spectrum they'll need towers. So no not happening.

Apple needs to make up the profit loss from all the carriers dropping subsidies. The next logical step to the cult is to exert more control. AFAIK, there were rumors of an MVNO. Also apple has $203B in cash so anything can happen.

Ever hear of American Tower? Mission complete for the towers. And they have enough try could buy Sprint or TMO and do fine. Although they'll need to overall Sprint before doing anything.

No point in buying towers, just rent. Google was going to drop $6+B for 700Mhz spectrum. Apple could go nuts with the 600Mhz auction. Apple can 100% get that 30Mhz set aside for "smaller carriers." Contiguous, nationwide, large block of 600Mhz to power an MVNO and/or "iNetwork."

LTE Broadcast would allow the apple cult to have it's own TV network as well.
All data and searches now flow through apple.
All billing and cash flows through apple.
etc

Apple buys Netflix just for their network

Apple buys Netflix.
Apple now has the CDN it needs.
Problem solved.
Better yet ... Apple buys the entire entertainment industry from petty cash.

I doubt Netflix would sell.

I know id not want them owning it. Prices would triple, Device list would shrink to Apple devices only.

Netflix doesn't have much of a CDN outside of their connect BS. They still use L3 and other networks the same as Apple uses now for ITunes
