Apple Working On Verizon iPad
Analysts believe it's just a matter of time...
by Karl Bode Wednesday 03-Feb-2010 tags: business · wireless · hardware
Apple's launch of the iPad arrived to mixed reviews last week, with the tablet costing a little extra ($130) if you wanted it to have 3G connectivity on top of embedded Wi-Fi capabilities. Unfortunately, the tablet was restricted to AT&T's HSDPA network (or T-Mobile EDGE, if you're not picky about speed). The choice to restrict the tablet to AT&T was an interesting one given AT&T's iPhone problems the last few years, though there were some practical considerations that justify the decision (like a confused public that would have to pay more for CDMA/EVDO guts). All of this may soon be irrelevant anyway, given that leaks are emerging that say the iPad may soon be on its way to Verizon:

Apple is working with Verizon on a version of its iPad tablet, despite Apple only announcing an AT&T partnership, according to Fox News Channel's Clayton Morris, who just spoke with a Verizon source. Morris is working on a piece about the topic and we'll link to it as soon as it's published. He says his Verizon source still thinks a deal will get done in the near future.

Of course many are still waiting for the announcement of a CDMA/EVDO-capable iPhone, something that was expected at last week's iPad announcement, but which never arrived.

Agreed. If this thing ran a scaled down version of OS X, I'd seriously contemplate buying one. My girlfriend wants a simple tablet she can carry to class and take notes on ... but tablet PCs are outrageously priced. This would fit the bill perfectly ... but it doesn't even have handwriting support.

I am curious as to how this fits into the Apple eco-system, as I've yet to hear of anything compelling about it, especially if you have a laptop and a smartphone. Apple is known for home runs, but they've also had some spectacular failures, I wonder if this will eclipse the AppleTV as the red-headed stepchild of Apple?

I agree... this 'would' be a great device, IMO, however, its too stripped down to be really useful besides basic browsing/iTunes/reading.

It needs:
- Flash (not likely, unless it had OS X)
- Multitasking (OS X like)
- Java

This is more of a niche/toy as is, made for the iTunes app store, but as a device, it just needs to be more flexible.

I'm hearing rumblings that multitasking will actually show up when the device is released. Java and Flash, fat chance. Who uses Java anyway other than as a mobile app platform (Apple has the App store) or for a very few web apps? Flash is a bigger deal, but Apple is never going to let Flash in its current incarnation onto an iPhone OS product.

I find the base iPad to be quite reasonable given the entire thing is an LCD screen and given what it has inside of it. However, I share your concern - it needed to run Snow Leopard. Didn't even need to be a scaled down version, Snow Leopard is small enough footprint that it would have run at least sufficiently. If it had, I would have bought one. Since it didn't, I just bought the MBP instead.

I would have preferred that so much more as well. My family
(mother, father, brother) left Verizon for the iPhone on AT&T. I said not to, to hold off for a bit. They did it anyway. Overall, no huge complaints but I know my mom has mentioned more dropped calls in areas where she never had dropped calls before [on Verizon]. Whether that is significant or not is a different story.

I'm due for a new phone from Verizon soon, and right now I'm looking at the Droid. Had the iPhone come out on Verizon's network a year ago, I would have upgraded to it then.

I know we discussed it before, but hold off. I'm on my 4th in 3 months and I'm about to call in again today and swap it for what will be my 5th. My opinion (based on personal experience) is that the Motorola is not doing proper QA on these things, as each one has a slightly different problem.

If the 5th has issues, I'm going to run it up the flagpole and request they give me a Blackberry.

Hooo boy, without derailing the thread, here is a list:

Phone 1:
- Multiple core OS crashes rendering the phone useless

Phone 2:
- Worked great, but screen had physical "depression" that ran the length of the screen. Eventually screen stopped responding.

Phone 3:
- Out of the box, phone hard locked during initial setup. If phone didn't lock after pulling the battery, would vibrate in 1/2 second intervals until battery was pulled.

Phone 4:
- Core OS crashed (com.android.phone for example), rendering the phone useless. Also has weird "sandpaper" feel to the screen and has major trouble registering long swipes, making things like unlocking the phone a 3 or 4 attempt process.

I tried going down that path with Verizon a few hours ago but I'm past the 30-day window, so they refused to swap it for a 9630 even though it's only half the price. They'd happily swap it for an Eris, (which ironically enough is the same price as the 9630), but I detest virtual keyboards.

I'll add another problem to the list, my phone decided to "un"-activate itself an hour ago. I'm waiting on a call and when I woke my phone up to see if I missed it, it was sitting at the initial screen that asks you to activate it.

I think I need to change careers, as my luck with technology lately has been comical.

Bought my Droid on launch day, haven't had a single issue aside from the occasional app that doesn't work right and the early camera autofocus bug that's since been patched.

Well, that and the time that I thought it died- even after plugging it in, it wouldn't turn on. Turned out the battery was just very, very dead.

Me too... I got mine on launch day and I've not had a single unresolved issue (auto focus, not all apps work equally well on all Android phones, this was prevalent in the beginning but very few apps ignore the capabilities of the Droid series)

I got mine from a legit VZW retail location. Wonder if that plays in at all to those with recurring defective phones... bad batch? Haven't found a reason I wouldn't recommend this for anyone looking for a majorly capable smartphone.

Good gawd, don't get a BlackBerry. Their OS is horribly outdated. I'd stick with the Droid or, better yet, switch to the Nexus One when it comes to Verizon in a few months. It's been getting stellar reviews. I plan to ditch my iPhone once the Nexus One is released. I like the iPhone, but I've come to realize that AT&T is just too horrible in my area. Dropped calls, slow/non-existent data...bleh. It's a great iPod, though.

Yeah, I agree.

This thing ranks right up there with the Apple III and the Pippin as a total flop.

The fact that they hyped it up so much made it that much more of a disappointment.

Apple has come up with some really innovative products over the years, and I have some of them (Mac Mini, MBP, iPod touch) but this one is their first Edsel in a while.

Aren't the number of Apple fans reason enough to predict success?

To help you understand, remember that AOL (as an ISP) was hated by technical folks, but loved by its non-geek customers. Its exactly these non-geek customers that love the iPhone and who will love their iPad.

This is going to be successful. The question is whether it is going to be mildly successful or tremendously successful. I won't buy an Apple product for myself, but I've bought some Apple stock for myself.

I am no Apple fan and do not plan to buy an IPad. But, when Applications designed for it come out, it may well turn out to be more useful than it seems right now. Some examples:

-A Word like application for taking notes.
-A mapping tool - oh wait, no GPS.
-A PowerPoint like application for creating and making presentations.
-Using a bluetooth headset and WiFi and VOIP to turn it into a phone.

I think that by six months after launch, there will be some compelling applications. Just not enough for me.

The iPad can do all of these things now. Notes exists for taking, well, notes. Jobs did a demo of location in Maps--it may not be true GPS, but it'll show you where you are. iWork is available, which gives you document and presentation capabilities. And you can currently use it for VOIP calling.

1 and 3 are taken care of already; iWork will be available for the iPad. 2 is taken care of; the iPad comes with Google Maps and the 3G version has aGPS. 4 will probably be taken care of as well.

Actually wrote a post on this...it's the first one on my site. If there's an app for everything I list, Apple has made a successful product. Otherwise people will stop buying soon after it comes out because "ooh shiny" isn't good enough.

Out of morbid curiousity, may I ask what about this device appeals to you? Not trying to be insulting, I'm just trying to figure out who Apple is trying to sell this to and why.

Considering the price, I don't really understand the appeal of the iPad over a netbook / laptop. Is the touch screen really worth the price premium and feature shortcomings?

We only have 1 PC in the house and we need another device. We don't have have room for another desktop and I think that the iPad for us will be a better choice than say a netbook.

For us its not a replacement device and we don't have a need for "power/productivity" uses with it. I see it being used for entertainment 99% of the time.

Surfing/Email/Photos/Music/Movies/Games

Probably the most compelling for us is the eBooks as my wife is an avid reader. Like I said before for what we intend to use it for I think its going to fit us perfectly.

Considering the price, I don't really understand the appeal of the iPad over a netbook / laptop. Is the touch screen really worth the price premium and feature shortcomings?
The touch screen is the most compelling part of the device, and I think you'll be surprised at what developers will be able to create for it. I think the device will outperform expectations.

As for feature shortcomings, that's a rather broad generalization. Not every device is the be all end all with every possible feature, etc...

Note I am no rabid Apple fan, having said this anyone with an iTouch, such as myself, understands the iPad. Despite all of the carping the iPad is going to sell in huge numbers. As his Holiness Steve, Moses II, Jobs pointed out in his key note intro of the iPad. There are 10's of millions people who have either an iPhone or and iTouch and these people already know how to operate the iPad, and these will be the first to purchase an iPad. I will not be one of the idiots lining up at an Apple store to get one. I am going to wait.

I'd sooner have Apple go out of business than have them merge. Besides, Apple does more than the iPhone anyways, which AT&T presumably has no vested interest in.

The Verizon rumors will never end

Seriously, ever since a few months after the FIRST iPhone launched we've been hearing these so called "analysts" and "experts" cry that there will be an iPhone / iPad / iSomething on Verizon. And guess what? 3 years later, still nothing.

Apple has made it clear they aren't giving Verizon a second shot at carrying one of their devices. When they turned down the iPhone, they lost their shot at working with Apple for anything.

Does this iPad thingy have a purpose?

Just to preface, I dumped my iPhone in favor of the HTC Droid from Verizon. ATT's limited 3G coverage made me want to stuff my iPhone in a shredder every time I tortured myself by trying to browse the Web. Btw, love, love, love my Droid.

That being said, I am in the market for an eReader. I own a computer consulting business and depend on my books, manuals and subscriptions to keep up with what's going on. In addition, sometimes I even admit in public that I absolutely love to camp out on the beach on vacation reading my latest technical novel. (I have ASP.NET 4.0 queued up for Maui in two weeks and I'm very excited!)

Closer to topic, I don't worship Apple and have never owned an Apple computer. However, comparing eReaders, the iPad is big enough to read full page documents in their original form, small enough to be portable, has enough battery life to handle a moderate day of usage, is back-lit, and shows color. The iPad also runs iPhone apps to read documents in PDF, iBook, Kindle, and Nook formats. These features will definitely help it to very quickly position itself as one of the premier eReaders on the market.

Justifying the price is a personal issue. No denying it's more expensive than other products that perform similar tasks, but these other devices only perform similar tasks. None of them combine eReader, email, browsing, multimedia, application set, portability, and connectivity anywhere near the capabilities of the iPad.

Certainly, not everyone wants all these functions in one device nor are some going to want to pay the price. However, the iPad has found a niche. Only time will tell how many people are in that niche and it's likely that the iPad won't be the next gen iPod, but business isn't about hitting a home run every time up to bat. Many games are won with just base hits.

Let us know how reading that iPad on a sunny Maui beach works out.... Man I know if I was in Maui I certainly would not be be spending my time reading on a beach
I'm sure having a full color LED screen in proper lighting conditions is nice but I'm venturing a guess that you'll be dealing with eyestrain and reading difficulties trying to see the iPads LED display in bright tropical sunlight as compared to using a comparable device with a sunlight-friendly E Ink display.

@centurytel.net

Re: Does this iPad thingy have a purpose?

Haha, I've had a lot of those same thoughts about the E-ink. My wife has a Kindle and it does work very nice outside. Unfortunately, because of the iPad release date I will be lugging good ol' paper books this vacation so my update might be a while.

Not sure how long I'll wind up holding out, but I would like to see the Apple products available on the Verizon network. I also checked out the Notion Ink referred to earlier and thought that looked pretty promising. However, I've been burned a few times by going with gadgets that weren't center stage. Tough to beat the social network that comes along with the Apple iProducts.

Regarding Maui, I'm sure I'll find the time to take a few shots of some hot bikinis. Luckily, my wife has quite a few.

iPad is too mediocre. iBook addition makes it mediocre
OT, but I remember from watching the iPad introduction, when Steve said the app was called "iBooks" - the first image that came into my mind was "they put a defunct laptop in there too? IT'S GOT EVERYTHING!"

Yeah

this tablet is, excuse my language, b*******. It is still running on AT&T, and it still runs the iPhone OS. And the name iPad? How do girls feel about that? Sure GSM devices are cheaper to make, but America has a fetish for CDMA. Hopefully, an EVDO Rev. A or LTE iPhone comes out soon. Someone who works at Apple told me it will.

Repeat after me: CDMA is dead

In the USA, everyone except sprint is going LTE.

CDMA is a dead end, no 4G evolution for it. In Canada, CDMA carriers (Bell and Telus) have already covertned to GSM/HSPA because they know that CDMA had become a liabilitty since they can no longer get the trendy phones for CDMA.

CDMA market is very small on a worldwide basis. And it is a short term market since CDMA carriers are in the process of migrating from this dead-end platform.

Also remember that Qualcomm (owner of CDMA) has sued loyal manufacturers and there is very little interest from manufacturers to deal with Qualcomm.

Yeah, RIM and Palm are happy that all the others have abandonned CDMA, but they too will soon stop producing new models for CDMA as soon as Verizon lights up LTE.

An LTE version would support HSPA and possibly EDGE as backup. Having CDMA as backup would require paying the royalties to Qualcomm and being open for lawsuits from Qualcomm.

I would not be surprised if Verizon will have HSPA support when it light up LTE. This would finally make it compatible with its part owner, Vodaphone.

4g and 3g don't just EVOLVE, they are separate technologies. ATT and Verizon are both on board for LTE (Long Term Evolution) systems for 4g. It doesn't really matter if they have GSM or CDMA for their current tnetwork.

Verizon Contract

I wouldn't even consider buying it unless I can use my existing Verizon date plan which is about ~$30 a month.
