Apple to Unveil iCloud Next Week
Meet Your Newest Cap Eater
by Karl Bode Tuesday 31-May-2011 tags: business · content · Mac · consumers · caps
Following on the heels of Amazon's Cloud Drive and the Google Music cloud service, Apple has announced that they'll unveil their cloud storage service next week. Dubbed iCloud, the service will allow cloud storage of both music and movies, and Apple has been in negotiations with the music and film industries for some time. The music industry has insisted that such services require entirely additional streaming licenses, but both Amazon and Google have refused to buckle on this issue -- insisting that such services are just storage lockers. Apple's also planning to unveil Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS X.

Wonder

How many people will keep their pirated material there, and have the RIAA/MPAA come swipe it and sue.

Re: Wonder

Zero? How does one prove that a person doesn't have a license for an encoded music file?

Edit: Oops. Forgot this will include video too. I'm assuming that if the video content wasn't obtained through the iTS then it will be denied entrance into Apple's cloud.

This supposedly will only allow "certain" MP3's to be uploaded. No one can determine what the requirements to meet the "certain" criteria are as of yet however.

What's that name again?

Was there any wonder what they were going to call it?

Problems?

So, if a problem arises in the cloud, are they going to deny that there is a problem?

Also, if it crashes, are they going to deny it crashed and say "We're installing new features so it may be unavailable. Please return later when we have the new features implemented."

Probably why they killed off their server line. Why own your server when you can trust us with your data.

Truthfully, I don't trust any cloud-based service with my data. Sure, I trust it for an encrypted backup, and that's it. If you trust your enterprise data on a cloud from another company, you're an idiot.

Re: Problems?

There are situations where it makes sense and it can be a very cost effective option for a business. As with anything, it depends on the business level outcome you desire, the backup and scalability plans in place, and the SLA's required for each of the business applications.

Indeed. The only way I would trust ANY cloud based service is if I encrypt the data myself PRIOR to uploading it to "the cloud".

With all the recent break-ins and leaks that have occurred to companies large and small, I just would not trust a cloud service with unencrypted data (or using the service's built-in encryption).

As for streaming my music collection to myself while away from home - my home server does that just fine.

Re: Problems?

99% of people think a server works at a restaurant. How do you expect them to set one up? Hence the market for clouds.

Theres no point in running a LAMP site on OSX, you dont have the net connection locally to do it anyways (non-DSL, non-cable, SLAed fiber). OSX Server doesn't offer any killer built in applications, and OSX isnt bound to only talking to OSX Servers out of the box, a la Windows with Exchange and Active Directory.

Do I run OS X Server? No. I prefer Gentoo, Ubuntu, or (if I have to) Windows Server 2008.

If you're being serious, do you have a source to reference for this? I don't see Apple shelling out $4.5 million for the icloud.com domain "just because."

Who needs electricity anyway? oh wait...

640K ought to be enough for anybody...oh wait... (Okay i know he didn't really say this, but thats not your mentality right?)

Who needs that internet thing anyway...oh wait...

Just sayin...

People that take this attitude humor me. It's like the people that say 'I never share information online'. HELLO, if you've ever used a credit/debit card or paid a bill online, your information is online. If you've ever bought a car, house, etc. i can pull enough information about you to steal your identity.

The 'cloud' has it's place. I for one like the idea of storying my music so it can be accessed from anywhere and any device. Doesn't cost me a damn thing either.

Good luck in a fire, flood, or your harddrives get hosed by some reason. Having your eggs in one basket means you have all to lose when things go sour on your end.

And don't forget the next version of iOS, iOS 5. And that is what most will be interested in and what the new iOS will give hints about the next iPhone, iPad, etc.

But does anyone really care?

Haven't people just about had enough Apple for one lifetime. This is a non-event who the hell cares moment if I ever saw one. It's bad enough people are duped into buying highly restricted, overpriced, underfeatured built in a sweat shop known for killing people or driving them to suicide garbage but now this....

Wake up people...wake up...stop drinking the koolaid and just say no. At what point do you finally say iMfedup with the iCRAP!

hail!

I'm so glad Apple decided to invent online storage so the world can benefit from their amazing innovations. Why didn't someone else think of this earlier? This just proves how great Apple is, they are true genius for always thinking of new ways to make life better for everyone.

I wonder how this will clash with those AT&T users who have iPhones and residential internet that has an AT&T cap.

Who Needs These "Clouds?"

The ultimate objective of these clouds is that you will eventually pay for these services, but who needs them? Large capacity hard drives are getting cheaper all the time. I have seen 1TB hard drives selling for $65 and the drive and the files you store on it are under your control!
