Apple/AMD partnership to be announced?

Reading various news sources linked to the AMD x86-64 platform and the Comdex 2002 I noticed this post over at the AMDmb.com forums.

Especially this section caught my attention:


"What will probably draw more attention to the keynote on Tuesday is the announcement that Hector will be making at the keynote about a substantial new partner for the Hammer platform. With all the rumors circulating about it already, you can pretty much rest assured that the Apple/AMD partnership will be big news come Tuesday."

Will tomorrow be THE day that will (if it all happens) probably create quite a shock thought the world of PC's ?!?

I'm really crossing my fingers for Mac OSX on an x86-64 platform..
Fast, powerful, stable (FreeBSD underneath) and a great interface.. :)

I said it once...

and i'll say it again.

NO!!!!!

First, Apple would have to kill Classic (which is not good for a lot of people). Second, the ibm 970 seems more promising and it is a PPC. Third, Apple (steve) would have to tell the board and investors LONG before anything like this, they did it with the PPC switch (from 68k).

Hrmmm... Seems like we don't need an AMD for that, already have it. Get a Mac.

Think Different..........NO!....MAYBE?...PERHAPS??

Who knows? if this is really true, it could be a win-win for both Companies.

Consider this:

AMD - Steadily declining revenues on larger and larger amounts of CPU's being sold. Intel gaining ground and making substantial in-roads with the P4, which will likely reach 3.0gHz either at the end of this year or early Q1 of 2003, which is well in advance of AMD's Hammertime. Partnering with Apple, if it becomes a success, could mean A LOT more product sold than they could on their own.

APPLE - less than 5% market share. 'Nuff said. They need a way to sell more Mac's and being able to offer a hybrid OSX/XP compatible system could just be crazy enough to work. Partnering with AMD, just like Apple did with NVIDIA, could be enough sway to capture some of that undecided market segment of the PC buying public.

BOTH COMPANIES - See Intel & Microsoft as a real threat. By combining forces they might just be able to stand up to Microbloat better than they could seperately.

Could this happen?? Who knows?

Well, i didn't...at least not today. NVidia has nothing to do with this! Nothing changed in the Mac or the OS except the gfx card and software...no big deal like this.

XP compatible???? are you crazy? The day I see Windows running natively on a Mac is the day I will die (either naturally from shock, disbelief, anger, - or killing my self for the same reasons). And Microsoft isn't going down the drain if Apple and AMD team up...IBM is a much stronger choice for apple.

Also, typical PC user, looking at MHz... a P4 3 GHz means nothing...the AMD Hammer and IBM Power4 / 970 will probably toast it.

Though most Apple fans will clearly not want this, it's probably inevitable if neither Motorola nor IBM will cooperate and make a product to meet steve-o's demands.

Motorola keeps screwing around with everyone and won't release anything faster while who knows what would happen w/ IBM's chip?

Also, from what I understand of it: OS 10.* - AltiVec = crap. Since Motorola won't release the patent, and won't come out with something faster/better, It's basically putting Steve Jobs on the spot. He's gonna have to do something about it, and if that means port to x86-like hardware, then so be it. I just won't rule anything out at the moment, because everything in technology is always changing.

Though if they do go x86'like, an exclusive deal w/ AMD would be great, since Intel's design of the P4 is ridiculously poor

Oh yea, and when the PPC 970 comes out, the "Windows users" will be saying, well, you still can't play counterstrike on it

We already have better......a step backwards is always good.....NOT.
The G4 is much more efficient.....more things get done on each clock cycle.....that's why the P4 needs so many GHz just to keep up.

You forget that AMD doesn't follow the same direction as Intel. Why else do you think their PR# compares so well to the number behind the P4?

Their not putting a P4 in the Apple, the might possibly be putting a Athlon 64 or a Opteron, either way the turn around for new processors will be faster than the Moto cpu

neither the P4 or the AMD 64 processor will be better than the IBM 970...you guys are looking at it like it's either current goop or AMD...however, Apple has many other options (some even from Moto)...IBM 970 is the best choice (as of now)

 Have you seen the benchmarks for all the common software, I like Macs to but there getting blown away by the 3 Ghz P4 with Hyperthreading.

A dual 1.25 Ghz is really no match for a 3ghz P4 currently, Apple really needs to do something or there going to fall to far behind.

I currently have a Athlon 2400 myself cause it provides plenty of bang for buck performance. I'm also waiting for the Athlon 64 to see if it's the real deal.

Maybe, but 2Ghz on an Athy isn't bad either

I do think that it would be kind of a major piss-off if Apple went x86ish all of a sudden now, but we can't rule out the possibility. That's all I am going to say on the matter.

And given the choices available for x86 CPU's, I would much rather for AMD to win the contract to make CPU's for Apple than Intel any day, given that I highly dislike the architecture of the Pentium4.

I just heard that Microsoft is buying Apple and is going to port OSX to the Intel chip! This is going to be their counter attack to Linux!!! Wow! I have been waiting for this all of my life!!!
