Apple's Beijing iPhone 4S Launch Gets Out of Hand
Store Pelted With Eggs, SWAT Teams Called In
by Karl Bode Friday 13-Jan-2012 tags: business · wireless · hardware · consumers · wireless
Apple has delayed additional iPhone 4S launches in China this week after a launch of the product in Beijing got more than a little out of hand. Apple's carefully-cultivated hype backfired when the company announced a delay in iPhone 4S's at the store, resulting in users (many of whom had slept out overnight in the cold) pelting the store with eggs and brawling with SWAT team members who had to be called in to restore order. "Unfortunately we were unable to open our store at Sanlitun due to the large crowd and to ensure the safety of our customers and employees, the iPhone will not be available in our retail stores in Beijing and Shanghai for the time being," Apple said in a statement.

Yea for some reason sales monkeys are afraid to give up thie crapberries. First thing I did when I took over IT was to get rid of the "you must use a blackberry" rule by showing the owner the last guy was full of crap when he said only a blackberry could work with exchange. Everyone got rid of them except for people in sales because some of them think it makes them look smarter.

once you get used to those keyboards it's tough to switch to something different.

I had a palm treo once and I learned how to type on it with just my thumbs...haven't had a similar experience since moving to regular keyboard phones.

By using a more vague term "lousy mobile phone" instead of specifically "iPhone", it was to be understood this was a generalization.
Others seemed to "get it"...

Apple has many China problems

Apple certainly has their China problems. Their manufacturing vendor Foxconn had to start paying their workers more money because the workers threatened mass suicide over low pay and 36 hr work shifts. Apple might actually have to cut in to their profits if the demands by their child labor force in China for better pay raises Apple's costs to make their phones.

Yes, that is so funny. Apple claiming they care about work conditions at Foxconn in China. Especially the part about child labor.

Initially, I thought that it might be due to Foxconn / Apple / Microsoft treatment of employees until I read the full article.

They're PHONES

People need to get over it.... it's a friggin phone.

More importantly Apple needs to get off it's high horse and get over itself... If they know that there are going to be 100 sold at a store, by send only 10? THEY are the cause of the idiocy....

I'm betting that the 'rioters' aren't folks looking to own the phone (for themselves) but rather the type to quickly flip it on eBay the phone for a quick profit. ...thus the disappointment (and where did they get the eggs from...did they bring it with them, just in case??)

You do realize production takes time. There's no benefit for Apple to not sell as many products as they can.

Re: They're PHONES

Current market price is about $100 USD higher than Apple retail price, given the limited supply and very high demand, there's great incentive for people to buy from Apple and flip them for profit

Re: They're PHONES

Apple doesn't realize a benefit from flippers beyond the initial sale, so it's in Apple's interest to sell as many devices as it's capable of manufacturing.

At >$400 per share, I think they can stay on their high horse as long as they damn well please.

I Still Don't Get It

I have an iPhone 4S, iPad 2, iPod Touch 4 (all gifts) and I still do not understand what the fanaticism is with the devices. They work and are designed well but I would not sit outside a store for two days waiting to buy one. You would think they were giving away free cocaine or something similar the way the customers act.

On a side note, I wonder why we do not see such behavior for other devices such as HTC Android based devices.

Its about showing off.

Chinese people have been about showing off and the people with money always try to separate themselves with those who do not. Apple products have become a status symbol in China, that is why it is a hot sell there.

And I really believe the people buying or throwing the eggs aren't selling it. Think about it. If you need money, why are you going to spend money and waste it by throwing it? The Chinese are not wasteful and by showing that they went to purchase the eggs, just to throw it out, it showed that these people don't care about money, they wanted the phone.

No, it just shows that this particular group of people is a bunch of uncivilized savages in need of a beat down. What rights do they have to trash private property like this?

Black Friday

The same type of people that go out shopping on Black Friday to try and save a buck. Pepper spraying each other, trampling greeters, throwing eggs, etc...

They are all the same. They will do anything to try and get what they want NOW. God forbid anyone try to stop them.
