Arbor: Tier One Network Traffic Way Down
While P2P Traffic Also Declines Dramatically
A new study by Arbor Networks indicates that the majority of Internet traffic now goes through direct peers and does not run over tier one incumbent provider networks. That's not particularly surprising, given the number of companies like Google that are building their own fiber networks. According to the firm, about thirty so-called "hypergiants"(Google, Facebook, Microsoft) manage about 30% of all Internet traffic. The study, which tracked traffic over 3,000 peering routers on 110 different networks, also notes that P2P traffic has "declined dramatically."

My bet would be that these two would be among the reasons:

1. TV Shows are often available for streaming after airing, in good quality, with a minimum of commercial interruptions.

2. Likewise Amazon, Netflix, and etc. keeps movies available "in the cloud" which minimizes the need to "hoard" an unseen movie when it is noticed on the P2P network

others?

Re: I wonder

You are paying for the series and original content. Showtime has sucked for me since stargate went to sci-fi or syfy

p2p traffic is down due to the fact that use of "1 click" hosters like rapidshare etc is overtaking torrenting as the preferred method of filesharing.

more legal methods for downloading/streaming media for free has a major part. Fancast/Hulu are more efficent then torrents.

How so? Fancast and Hulu have to force the content down a single channel, congested or not. The P2P networks offload their heavier traffic on uncongested routes.

Surprise--- it's the rise of LEGAL options such as Hulu, Netflix, Amazon.com etc etc

Maybe not everybody is all hardcore pirates as the RIAA/MPAA players would like you to believe. We all know video takes up bandwidth, so the more LEGAL video options become available the less people need to turn to P2P to find shows and movies, and the result is a fall in P2P traffic.

Course, this could be spun a different way. In fact I'll bet that's exactly what will happen. You'll see stories talking about how the lawsuits and prosecutions are "working" and making people stop using P2P and file sharing. Ya, right. Damn, they will too. You know they will.

I've been hanging garlands of garlic around the doors and windows. Keeps the vampires at bay. I know it works, because I haven't seen a single vampire!

Makes Sense

Comcast has their own national backbone, AT&T's ATTIS/SBCIS backbone handles AT&T DSL customers, Verizon-GNI handles Verizon customers, Suddenlink has a backbone...the list goes on.It's amazing how much peering we have in the US these days...makes it nice for educational institutions because they can hook into National LambdaRail TransitRail and just dump traffic in Chicago, Seattle and LA onto providers like Comcast, without having to use (relatively) expensive transit carriers.

On P2P, I'm not surprised at all. Music sharing is all but dead, since you can find all that stuff cheaply and quickly online from a variety of sources now. Movies are still being trafficked, but not as much as before. As far as software goes, basically the only thing on the charts right now is Windows 7.

You don't even need to pirate Windows 7 yet. Mac OSX 10.6 was hella cheap. The only thing I saw with a big spike recently was Batman Arkham Asylum.

Re: Makes Sense

Personally I don't want to run 10.6 on a hackintosh. Also, I did buy a family pack of OS 10.6 (the size...requiring a dual-layer DVD, is a rather effective anti-piracy tool) and get Windows 7 free through my school.

This is all happening because a lack of content , no good games or if they are good the prices have fallen enough that they are easier to buy then copy.

Im betting a bad economy has a huge role in this as well , maybe most of the folks who used p2p to get music have found other means , or are using encrypted means that can't be distinguished yet ?

You can't forget that distribution methods like steam have pushed gamers away from peer to peer. It has (nearly) all of the convience of downloading the game illegally except you have to pay for it and don't have to worry about viruses (a very nice tradeoff in my book).

to expensive for a TB? I can go and pay $200 retail for one at a store. I don't consider that expensive.
