As The Broadband Video World Turns Shuns, rebukes, spats, and jilted lovers... Tipped by Romney2012 
Viacom, fresh off their dispute with YouTube over content filters, have struck a content deal with Joost, the bandwidth gobbling p2p video system being developed by the makers of Skype. While there's ample "Brad and Jen" tabloid-style talk today of spurns, spats and shuns -- it's not clear that Viacom wouldn't have signed a Joost deal anyway, since Joost has been quickly signing deals to improve their "TV like" experience. Joost probably wanted MTV properties on their system regardless of the negotiation breakdown between Google and Viacom.

As Google took over more and more companies and expanded greatly, they are coming in to conflict with many other content and distribution providers on the internet. None of this is unique to Google. There's always been hardball negotiations between players in the value chain for content distribution. Just think of all the hardball tactics of network programmers vs dish companies or cablecos vs local network affiliates.
Google is just the new kid on the block - albeit a mighty big new kid on the block.
In the EU, Google has almost replaced Microsoft as the most hated US corporation and ahead of Apple. From now on continued Google growth will be fought tooth and nail by a large number of competitors. While Microsoft may lament the loss of being the only unstoppable force, at least they get to smile at Google's change from the most well loved internet company to one hated by more and more.
It's one thing to be hated by rivals. It's another to be hated by the users. I don't think Google falls into the latter category at all. | |

Northford, CT | Gotta love it My guess is that this is just another piece of Viacom's negotiation with YouTube. Quite simply YouTube is too big to ignore and they know it, rantings to the contrary notwithstanding. Expect both parties to play nice and announce a content deal soon.

Cable ends a few miles down the road.

With it's current line-up there is no way that it is going to compete with cable. I'd be really interested to see what they offer when it goes live. | |

Direct download from the vendor results in increased income from larger bandwidth purchases.
Joost spreads that bandwidth usage around existing customers, no increased bandwidth sales. | |

Two Joost EVPs and its Chief Creative Officer are all former MTV execs ,so the Joost/Viacom deal was a given .
There's also some MTV content already on the platform that is still in closed beta .Joost should launch officially in June for those of you that cant get an invite . | |

Long Beach, CA | better beta I have been using Joost for a few days, and even when it's not stuttering, I don't see anything interesting.
Unless I am missing something: you cant jump forward in the video, no user set cache/buffering settings, much of the content is short clips.
Can only get better, but so far nothing good. | |
