Asheville Gets “Largest Broadband Line Ever”
Asheville to Atlanta in minutes
Netriplex has announced that it’s working with AT&T to bring a new broadband line to Asheville, NC which will extend all the way to downtown Atlanta, GA. The line will be an OC-192 optical fiber which will allow businesses in Asheville’s Biltmore Park commercial center to access quick speeds. Residents in the area shouldn’t get too excited though. This “largest broadband line ever” is only intended to meet the needs of Netriplex’s clients although they’re considering sharing the spoils with other businesses in the area.

Largest ever?

Hardly the largest or the fastest.

Try a OC-768 over a distance of 8,477 kilometers.

Infinera Demonstrates Transoceanic 40G Services

Fun, but not news though IMO.

Re: Largest ever?

They might be just talking about within that territory, you know about the whole marketing schemes companies have going on =P

I assume it's "unlimited" access too...

I agree...
Shaw has OC-192's hitting many places with its 'bigpipe' network. White River (population 1000) has OC-192 service.

Biggest for Asheville - not saying much

It's basically a 10Gbps pipe.

However, the way that AT&T builds SONET, it could actually be an OC-192 ring, BUT the ISP could just be actually buying a much smaller portion - 1 gig, for example. We've got a few of those ourselves.

But it CAN go 9621Mbps - whee! (as needed)

What they do down there?!

Why do they need all that speed down there in NC?
Hi-def security cameras for the furniture warehouses...?

:-P

Good, as long as I can see better throughput on my speed tests down to NC, I don't care.. route away!

Yep, a different word where they can SPELL correctly.
New York is the financial capital of the world (and a target) which is a primary reason for bandwidth and technology resources.
How nice the people are is of less importance to the topic at hand.... BANDWIDTH distribution. The NORTHEAST hub has the majority of the resources due to the concentration of wealth in the northeast states.

New York, long island sinking? Not likely.
What has been under water lately is Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

The rest of the US has much catching up to do when it comes to bandwidth. Long Island for example has two companies delivering 15+ megabit broadband for $50 for less (with 40-100% coverage). This cannot be said for much of the country.. N.C. or otherwise. Let's not forget an oc192 is only about 100mbit link for 100 businesses. Oc192 links are almost obsolete for the Northeast, so.. good that we can resell the old equipment down south as we upgrade to oc1536 & oc3072 backbone fiber switches.

That guy is from IN, which is not even close to the south. "Yep, a different word where they can SPELL correctly." Correct spelling, wrong usage. Maybe you left the l out of world on purpose? I don't hope any part of the US sinks. Doing so would put me on the side of those who attacked us. They didn't attack New York. They attacked all of us.

FYI, I'm typing on a 2-year old laptop keyboard and the touchpad does some weird crap (cursor was probably on the "l" and wiped it before sending), so at least I have a plausible excuse. It's not for the effort of proof reading, just the luck of the draw sometimes. Maybe BBR should have an "EDIT" feature readily accessible, that would help. Over 99% of what I write on BBR is understandable. I force no one to agree with what I say.

Use the pipe symbol. I wasn't defending everyone down here, just myself. My mother was an editor. I never had a chance!!

just a stupid question neigh boor
if Y'all (»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y'all) have all that wealth why do charge for bridges to long island and have tollways ? not to mention terrible traffic ( Toronto Canada give you a run for the money in traffic problems

was it ny or NJ that exports its trash to other states ?

Cheap offsite / remote hosting I guess. I assume Asheville is a remote site for Atlanta businesses. Northeastern PA also is huge in that market for the NYC customers since it's way out of the league.

You figure north eastern PA where the number after the OC is greater than the collective amount of teeth in a town, is less disaster prone than a far larger city.

Why does asheville need a big pipe?

Asheville is a large banking hub, a relatively big player in that arena. I'm sure that has something to do with it.

gimme

I wouldn't mind some of that....

It sucks, when someone comes into an area, puts in a really quick link, and no one else gets to benefit from it.

Sometimes when you look at internet routing, it really blows your mind. You on ISP A, your friend on ISP B, and to send packets across the street, your packets go to washington, or some other out of the way area, and then all the way back to your friend. Sometimes I wonder why more isps don't peer with each other more, to avoid having to long haul data when its just going across the street.

It means that the speed of light is working on southern time - taking it slow and easy .
