story category Astroturfers Hand Out 'Ethics' Award
TRAC at the national press club
(old news - 09:14AM Tuesday Sep 12 2006)
tags: business · telco
Telco critic and consumer advocate Bruce Kushnick points out that Astroturfers, who spend their days misleading the public, are now handing out ethics awards. The Telecommunications Research and Action Center (TRAC), is an astroturf group run by Issue Dynamics. Issue Dynamics in turn is a bell-funded PR & lobbying group that creates artificial consumer groups (and co-opts existing groups) in order to create the appearance of "grass roots" support for incumbent political policy - policy that frequently is anything but favorable for consumers.

"Only in Washington DC would no one bat an eyelash when an astroturf group is a sponsor and prime mover that gives out "ethics' awards in telecommunications at the National Press Club," laments Kushnick. The award is in cooperation with The United Church of Christ, which Kushnick notes is also used by Issue Dynamics to help (for a price) create a public face for telco or cable company policy (more historical detail of their "ethical" behavior here).

The original press release for the event says it "honors individuals whose work embodies the principles and values of advocating for the public interest through social communications." We wonder if that is Issue Dynamics code for "regurgitates our press releases and farmed data without criticism or objective reason"?

So you're saying the basic thrust of Bruce Kushnick's writing, that U.S. consumers have been screwed for years by the telcos, is not true?

I would welcome any insight into where you think he's wrong. Don't forget to include sources for your information.

Re: What's next?

I second that. Show us where the companies that you are financially interested in are being "misrepresented" by him.

Please provide links to show where all the money they have swindled from the american people has ended up. Because we all know all of it did not make into that fiber network they promised us way back in the 90's.

No awards for Stalin?

How long is it before the corporate greed apoligist Tr0llz come here applauding the ethics awards, and applauding companies for not bowing under pressure to follow laws and regulations. How about an ethics award to Verizon,BellSouth,Comcast, and the devil himself, AT&T for fair and ethical business practices, and another award for being humanitarian and philanthropist.

Keep it up, BBR

Good to see some real journalism, providing a counterpoint to everything I historically here in the industry itself.

Congrats BBR on drawing the lines. I appreciate the hard work.

And a story at »www.UCCtruths.com asks "United Church of Christ Stooge for the Baby Bells?" Verizon (and Issue Dynamics) created a rally and campaign with various groups including UCC and the Gray Panthers to make MCI, then Verizon's largest competitor, look bad in the courts. Ironically, it worked and Verizon ended up buying MCI.
MCI/WorldCom screwed their customers, employees and share holders all by themselves. Do you read the news, real news not this crap, or do you just play games?

United Church of Christ a stooge for Phone companies, right. I know where all of the stooges are and they are not in Church.

When that clown/stooge/liar/Kushnick does something constructive call me.

You completely ignore the role the UCC played in the atroturf campaign against MCI. Why?

Your posts are utterly lacking in actual content.

Teletruth's posts do have content, false content. I have posted the truth with links and they go ignored. When I stoop to Teletruth's level I get attention. When Mr. Kushnick lists a bibliography and/or foot notes and proves what he says I will be the first to apologize.

I do not deny that The Phone Companies are for the most part now a business and not a utility. They have done nothing illegal; no Phone Company executives have done the Perp Walk. They are forced to do what all businesses do to turn a profit for the share owners. Ma Bell the common carrier is dead, the people wanted her killed and yet they weep.

Mr. Kushnick says the Phone Companies do not innovate, that is partly true because of the breakup. Before the breakup Bell Labs was granted thousands of patents. Perhaps you have heard of a few, the transistor and lazar to name two. When Bell Labs was granted a patent they had to release it to the public domain because they were part of a controlled monopoly.

What I do know is that Teletruth and their supporters are running scared and they should be. The Phone Companies are no longer going to subsidies their business. I do know that Teletruth makes many false claims, which is why you will never see foot notes or a bibliography to back up their false and misleading statements.

I did some long and hard research and the $200 billion Pennsylvania *gave* Bellatlantic to run fiber to every home in the state to an outright lie. That $200 billion is the total revenue, not profit, Bellatlantic made over many years. That number includes Yellow page advertising. What do Yellow Pages have to do with broadband?

The numbers we keeping hearing about broadband speeds and cost in Japan are a Red Hearing. That 100 MG is only available to multiple unit buildings and the installation is about $500 USD. Verizon installs FIOS for FREE.

Teletruth can not list a source for their false and misleading statements. They would have us believe the United Church of Christ and the Gray Panthers are groups Verizon put together. They would have us believe Teletruth is a consumer organization, they are a front for CLECs and ISPs, CLECs and ISPs see their free ride disappearing, they will have to pay market value the same as all of us.

Remember it was MCI/WorldCom that promised us the World if they could compete. They broke up the number 1 communication system in the world. We are now 16 and MCI/WorldCom robbed widows, orphans and employees; then they were consumed. Remember, fool me once shame on me, fool me twice shame on you. Don't be fooled by Teletruth and her MCI/WorldCom wannabes.

I had to respond to name calling by someone like yourself…

What has Teletruth done so far? (since 2003)
* we worked on 2 class action suits, both settled, against Verizon New Jersey and got millions back for customers.
* we filed a FOIA to see the Bell companies’ cooked books that were filed at the FCC which the Bells claim we shouldn’t be allowed to see,
• we have 2 separate active IRS complaints against the phone companies for writing off about $20 billion in missing equipment.
* We filed the first Data Quality Act Complaint at the FCC using 8=year old data about ISPs, which helped create bad laws that blocked independent ISPs.
* Attempted to stop the increase on bogus charges like the FCC Line Charge or the failure to audit the Universal Service Fund.

And that 3% Spanish America War Tax that’s been removed from everyone’s bill –I've been talking about getting rid of this charge back in 1998.

I'm currently writing a series on telecom and broadband for Harvard's Nieman Watchdog project --- the first article is how the Bells charged us about $200 billion for fiber networks we never got... and no, FiOS isn't close to what was promised in 1993, when we started paying.

And we're just getting started...

And you? Besides sitting on lists and calling people unfounded names?

And Teletruth is NOT funded by any company or organization. we make money by selling ebooks, doing phone bill audits that lead to refunds and expert witness in class actions against the phone companies for overcharging.

Give me a link to your claims. The only links I get are from your sheep that point back to your bogus consumer FOR PROFIT Teletruth. As for that Harvard group they are an embarrassment to journalist, they only quote your and don't do any independent reporting. I know B.S. when I smell it. I have yet to see anything that did not lead back to your B.S. statements. Give me a link to anything that does not point back to you. Come on give me one.
