Filtering effort continue to get increasingly ridiculous...
09:02AM Tuesday Aug 04 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: world · content · networking · consumers
As Australia's plans to filter the Internet grow ever more expensive and ridiculous, there's increasing evidence that the multi-million dollar effort simply isn't going to work, something ISPs in the country have tried to tell the government repeatedly. Efforts to apply filters to the country's school systems have gone poorly, with the filters busy blocking educational sites -- but not pornography. Ironically, access to several Australian politicians' websites was filtered, but access to pornography was not.

What next?

They spent billions on all this so far, and it's coming back to bite them in the ass. What will they spend more Billions on next? More obviously ineffective and pathetic filters?

Yeah! Think of the children! And today's children can bypass any half decent filter in 2 seconds and continue on with their "education" like there was nothing in the way at all. Now this attempt comes down. Fools and idiots

I'm thinking they would rather follow our model and spend those billions on spin and misinformation on how good it is for everyone and how good of a job it's doing.

I'm starting to wonder with all the stupidity in the government, why we haven't nuked ourselves to death yet.

It is staggering. Hopefully, they aren't that stupid

I don't think I could've said it any better. You do a great "I'm a pathetic politician" imitation

And apparently they've forgotten that all naked bodies aren't porn. Don't they remember anatomy classes back in the day?

And the costly and useless spin continues. I'd love to see what Karl would write up about them adopting our spin system like you said.

When the people in power don't understand technology, they make a reliance on it and believe it will work if they throw enough money at it. The sad truth is - Filters don't work period. You shouldn't rely on a filter system to prevent people from looking at things they shouldn't. You should just use it as a first line of defense, and not a crutch for educating the users. I mean, if they really don't want the students to view smut, what is the sys admins doing? Can't they setup a proxy to monitor for students who are looking at it and punish accordingly?

I see Phase 2 of this "project", block ALL sites unless they are on a whitelist.

I think they already did the white/Blacklist thing in the past and it was noted here. That failed miserably too

This is a good example, though I think there was another one kicking around further back: »Australia's Net Filters To Target Games, Too

Heres a plan Aussies

Use opendns.com and save the money to be spent on something useful.

I'm not the biggest fan of Opendns but I think it does a better job than what the Aussies have come up with and its free as well.

But it works in China !

But ! But !

The chinese can do it succesfully, can't they ?

I mean, if the chinese can do it succesfully, why couldn't Australians ?

I can just see the next step now:

Kevin Rudd: I have negotiated a deal with the Chinese government whereby Australia will outsource its net filtering to the chinese who have done a great job of building their nation's firewall. We expect reduced costs and better service.

And when that doesn't work, the chinese will then outsource the australia contract to the indians.

In the end, "fibre to the home" project in Australia will change meaning just a tad: the fibre will go from each home to Tuvalu or Fiji where it will connect to an unfiltered internet feed directly, thus bypassing whatever filters the Aussie government wants

Re: But it works in China !

To be fair, the vast majority of Chinese and Indians prefer their government to filter out porn and related material. They feel the government *should* be concerned with the moral well-being of the people.

I don't know much about the Australian populace though. Considering they're not really Asian, I kind of doubt they have the same attitude towards government.
