A little clunky?
(old news - 05:42PM Tuesday Dec 05 2006)
tags: Video · Fileswapping · software · HDTV
There are some impressions available at the p2p blog of the new Azureus video-trading and download store Zudeo, which we mentioned entered beta yesterday. The company hopes to create a YouTube alternative that allows users to trade larger files at higher resolutions (including HD) and gives them a place to buy content from Hollywood and TV studios. With the launch comes the introduction of the Azureus 3.0 BitTorrent client. A video overview of the new client's features is available here.

not worth the memory...

azureus is just to damn memory hoggish to be a worthy torrent client... utorrent all the way... I don't know of anyone who would use a fraction of the functionality that azureus uses to just get a torrent... azureus is now venturing into the money making area, which is fine, but i think the time has come for it to cater to another group of folks rather than people who are looking for simple torrent sharing...

just as a side, does anyone know if the torrent protocol will become enabled in something like IE/firefox as a plug-in rather than a stand alone client...?

Re: not worth the memory...

I've got an AMD 1.1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM from 1999, and Azureus isn't memory hoggish for me. I keep it minimzed to the system tray, though.

Re: not worth the memory...

I really like the service. Hopefully more people publish content, since it's kind of lacking in content now. Although thats not to say theres not some cool things on it right now, just not enough.

The site itself needs to be polished up and needs a better way to search through content.
I wish the application had a back button while browsing through content.

Hopefully they can get more content and fix some of the bugs, then they could easily top youtube.

Re: not worth the memory...

There is a back button on the top right in the blue area. It is a sign that looks like a backwards "Play" button for audio if I remember correctly.

I like the application. I have not had any problems with the functionality and you can hit the "Advanced" tab and it shows you the old version that we are used to. I do agree it needs a little refinement on the searching capabilities though. Yesterday there were 22 pages of "stuff", and it was interesting to just look through it. Some of it was junk, but some of it was interesting (Matrix XP).

No memory problems and I run it minimized. The SafePeer plug-in is nice because it uses a web based blocking list of known "bad peers". That by itself really sells the application to me along with its ease of use for advanced users. You can read about the SafePeer plug-in here: »azureus.sourceforge.net/plugin_d···safepeer

Azureus Memory Consumption
When Azureus first came out, it ran as two separate processes; Azureus.exe, which would take a nominal amount of RAM, say a few MB, and the JAVA process, which would take close to 100MB of RAM.

Yes, it sucked memory!

The 2.5.0.0 VERSION of Azureus takes the attached amount of memory, all in ONE SINGLE process.

Better than Bearshare, if not many other P2P programs at least.

Zudeo is not a replacement for Azureus 2. Zudeo (Azureus 3) will be developed alongside the Azureus 2 UI.

Hope this info clears some things up.

Azureus 3.0 (.0.0) ?

So what is this...

It looks like they've taken Azureus and given it a brand new UI and a lot of Zudeo-specific functionality. But there is no "Azureus 3.0", the development is still on 2.5.0.1 in beta.

I knew since Azureus started getting VC money there would be this kind of stuff going on. The development of Azureus itself doesn't seem to have changed much, if at all, though.

Can't say much about what Zudeo does, as I dare not install the thing. But if it is a view of the future of Azureus development, then Azureus sure has come a long way from being one of the top projects at SF... I wonder if it will have been worth it.
