Bay Area Demonstrates Successful Public Transit Wi-Fi
WiFi Rail patents its multi-terrain system
WiFi Rail, a company which specializes in the development of wireless systems for public transit, has been working with the San Francisco Bay Area on the installation of a multi-terrain W-Fi network. The installation and testing on that system are complete and have been successful.
quote:
“Tests on moving trains -- at over 65mph -- have demonstrated upload/download speeds over 15 Mbps. Testing has included streaming live video from onboard train cameras while simultaneously watching five Internet video feeds, video conferencing, VoIP phone calls, and downloading multi-meg files.”
This particular system runs across underground stations and aboveground tracks as well as through interconnecting tubes. However, it points to the possibility of extending wireless networks across multiple public transportation environments ranging from freeways to ferry systems. As such, WiFi Rail is currently working on patenting its system.

Re: New York

Hell no. I like the silence of no cellphones ringing, peopel carrying stupid conversations and me being stuck having to listen to their crap. Everything is fine as is. Maybe in the stations but no way in hell should it be done for tunnel service.

Well then enjoy it while you can! The city is in the process of contracting with an outside company to bring service to all the subway stations in the 5 boroughs. While this service isnt "supposed" to work in the tunnels, I can assure you that in many cases it will.

Julio,

I'm afraid that the needs of the many will outweigh the needs of the few. I’m sure that the investors can come up with 1,000 reasons why we should have wifi on a moving train. I’m sure the first 100 will hint to something like public safety and immediate information dispersion.

But anyway, I doubt you’ll see anyone using a laptop on the 3 train on its way to New Lots. The customer base or demographics for this service will be very specific, and I’m sure not everyone will be phase or disturbed by this service if it were to come to NYC.

Re: New York

IF the new yorkers rode the subway system for 100 years, why would not having cellphone service be a public safety issue?

Boston's MBTA

The MBTA is doing something similar on the Commuter Rail lines around the Boston area:

What's really cool are the actual coverage maps of each line:

Re: Boston's MBTA

I've used that before- it's actually a very good service, apparently it works by placing routers on the trains that connect to the Sprint EV-DO network, so it doesn't work while waiting in stations.

ONLY working at 4 live stations

The installation and testing on that system are complete and have been successful.
But this system is only up on 4 stations next to each other downtown. No approval has been given to implement this across the BART system. The story gives the impression that this implementation has gone further than it has.

Not that new

Trains in England have been providing on-board Wi-Fi for a number of years now. I'm not sure what technology they use, but it works and it works at a reasonable speed. What's more, they also provide real power points by the seats.

backhauled

How is this backhauled? Obviously this isn't stationary Wifi APs along the tracks, since all the client would be doing is reassociating to a new AP, and that AP will be gone before a IP is obtained.

Crazy people talk to themselves....

I think this is the deep basis for hating people who talk on cell phones. Only crazy folks walk around and talk to invisible people and these phone people look just like lunatics.

I also think if you gave crazy people headsets, then they wouldn't look crazy anymore. It would just look like they are on the phone.
